[News] 'No Doubt' Secondary Will Be Better

38 posts in this topic

I honestly like Pees' "everybody is a starter" attitude. Not only is it smart from a conditioning stand point (keep in mind we start in Mile High again), but it forces all guys, young and old, to bring their A-game, dial in and focus, feel like they have a vested stake, and yes - enhance competition.

I've got no idea why anyone would disagree with you. I can't say it often enough, we led against the Pats 3 times, twice by 2 TDs. It was ugly. Lets hope those guys can stay healthy. That's the big challenge.

Ā

...........and the worst game was the Patriots game.

Ā

Yep, our secondary was just demolished by injuries last year. Ā I'm still surprised we got so far with the guys we had out on the field. Ā And I mean no disrespect to our coverage team at all - they did as well as anyone could expect, but having so many guys that were new to the team (and some new to the game) was never going to work.

Ā

I am very excited for the defense this year - I think some of the talent we relied upon last year will become far more solid after going through a full offseason with the team (looking at you Melvin). Ā Plus, with us getting Jimmy back from injury and adding new pieces via free agency I'm hoping we see a truly dominant unit out there. Ā I certainly think they are capable of it.

Hill and Lewis will be our safeties. Elam and Brooks will back them up. Smith at one outside corner, Arrington at slot corner while Webb, Melvin, Jackson, Vaughn and Walker will compete for the other outside corner. That is good from a talent and a depth standpoint. Barring injuries this should be a first class secondary with Smith and Hill potential probowlers. Given the strength and depth of the front seven, Pees might have himself a top 3 defensive unit. We need either Means, Z.Smith or McClellan to step and set the edge opposite Upshaw. We also need Urban and/or KLM to be healthy and play up to expectations.

It will be helpful to the defense to have an offense that will sustain drives and put up points as the Ravens should do this year. When an offense is down 14 points they become predictable, which should make the defense that much more effective.

This is a team game and the Ravens have as much overall team talent and depth as I can ever remember. They really have no glaring weakness. High hopes for 2015.

I don't need to read anymore posts on how Brady beat us in the playoff game by doing a surgical job on our secondary. That was last year's news and it makes me sick to keep reading about it. This year, we have a much improved unit. Barring no serious injuries, I feel we could field the best secondary in the NFL.

Lets make this clear, our Secondary was bad becuase of injuries not talent or coaching. Our seconday along with our agressive front 7 will be the talk of the NFL. Watch.

I agree. Pees is on the clock. Our 7 best secondary guys missed significant playing time last year. Hill, Smith, Webb, Elam, Brooks, Jackson, Melvin. They are all back. The ones who couldn't keep up with the pace are all gone and we added a stud rookie and 2 proven vets. That's 10 guys that will fight for 5 starting spots. Last year we entered the season without hill and Webb. Elam was a starter and Brooks was a rookie. In other words, we are light years ahead of where we were a year ago.

This is very similar to our Oline 2 years ago compared to our Oline last year. We added a few pieces to an already solid foundation. And the youngsters who struggled were gone. The youngsters who showed potential became great depth. Very similar situations and that's why I'm very optimistic.

Pees is on the clock! It's on him if he can't field 4 quality guys in the secondary out of 10 talented guys.

The 2 things the 2ndary must focus on is tackling and turnovers. when your Nose Tackle leads the team in int's that an indication that the 2ndary isn't getting many turnovers. Im looking forward to more ball hawking, if Doom and Suggs continue to feast on qb's, this new look secondary should have no problem picking off opposing qb's. Also Elam isn't the only one with poor tackling skills, too many times last season RB's and WR's got extra yards that they shouldn't have and some of those extra yd's turning into TD's like in the Pats game. If we can tighten up on these 2 things this should be a top 5 2ndary.

Especially when the secondary wasn't sure which receivers were eligible.

Shame on the referees, who are supposed to make that known. And I hate to say it, but shame on Harbs. That's what timeouts are for. As much as I like Harbaugh, I have to admit that clock management and the use of timeouts are not his strengths. He has many, but those two issues are not them. Further proof of that was the Cheatriots game when Lee Evans dropped what would have been the winning touchdown catch and we had to have Billy Can'tkick try the field goal that would tie and send the game into overtime. It was rushed and we had a timeout that should have been used for Can'tkick to compose himself and not Be rushed. Unfortunately the timeout was not called. Like I said, for all Harbaugh's many abilities and successes as a HC, I just don't think clock management and the best use of timeouts are in his "plus" column. Don't misunderstand me, though. I'm a Harbaugh fan.
