[News] Don't Forget About Rookie TE Nick Boyle

52 posts in this topic

Personally, I would be shocked if all four weren't with the team all season. Someone might have to spend the season on IR or someone might be put on the PUP list. But none of them are leaving.

If the media has free reign to video during media day, the footage is out there anyway. If that's the case, there should be plenty of video to choose from. It would be nice to share more on the website if there is no additional exposure to other teams than already exists. I get a much better feel for a player watching some plays than having them described to me. A visual gives so much more info than the written word.

With the young guys we have at TE I think we should use Pitta out wide more to give us a more skilled blocker on run plays because I believe Pitta could be a better blocker on a CB than any of our receivers.

I have no problem with Gilmore and Williams as our starting TEs. I'm not sure even a healthy Pitta takes snaps from these guys. Boyle will be on the 53 man roster in case Pitta goes down. He would never clear waivers and the Ravens will not risk losing him. The problem with Pitta is he may appear healthy but could go down and out at any time. His situation is just too fragile not to keep 3 other TEs. If Pitta is healthy that means they will keep 6 WRs instead of 7. I like Smith, Perriman, Brown, Aiken, Butler and Waller. Due to his fragility, I could only justify keeping Campanaro as a returner/7th WR. He may not be able to hold up under NFL poundings. We'll also have Jackson and Webb as well as Vaughn that can return kicks. I'd like to see Brooks and his speed as a returner as well.

This team is so deep it's amazing. It really doesn't matter much about the 6th receiver or 4th TE. These guys will hardly get on the field.

Since he is a TE/fullback hybrid, wonder if they will use Kyle "Juice" Juszczyk strictly as a fullback??!! Lot's of talent in that area, can't wait to see it in action!!

Anyone else thinks he looks like Podrick Payne from Game of Thrones in this picture?

Gillmore bears a closer resemblance to Khal Drogo than Boyle to Podrick.

i think our offense will be top 5 in the league if we can start clicking and get in a groove early in quarters. I love our TE group, O-line, RB and WR's. All Trestman has to do is keep us grounding and pounding the ball so the PA can do it's magic for Joe. Forsett can easily eclipse 1500 yds or close to it and we could have two receivers hitting that 1k mark this year as well. We have a solid chance of getting to the ship this year, especially if or DB's stay healthy. Whoooo

Boyle should prepare for a bigger role, because I really think Pitta should call it a career. For his sake. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see him fire it up with Flacco more than anything else, he's such a stand up great guy, one of my favorite players hands down. But exactly for those reasons he should think about his health and retire. His re-injuring is now rather a question of when more than if. May be he gets lucky and it won't happen again for 5 years, maybe he can even retire in his 30s without it happening, but the risk will always be there, especially as a bigger TE who will get constant punishment to that hip. And another injury like that could leave him crippled for life. I would never want something like that to happen to a player, especially to Pitta. So I really hope he quits, otherwise I will be scared every time I see him jogging onto the field.

wouldn't be surprised at all of Pitta participates in training camp, from the film i saw, he could run routes, block, as well as do drills with his hips....

WAIT! You'd risk releasing a 4th-to-6th Rd TE with a big body, good blocking skills and very good hands on the oft-chance that Dennis Pitta can last an entire season of knocks?   :ref:

While I like Dennis Pitta, we're not talking about Falcon Tony Gonzalez or Charger Antonio Gates!  :oldwiseman:

I'm curious as to what we are going to do though, if Pitta does come back. We can't carry 4 TEs. Something would have to give.

What would be your suggestion?

Don't forget about Konrad Reuland! He is 6'6", 260 and is NFL seasoned. He showed up for audition Nov 2014 on Tuesday, nailed it!. Practice on Thursday and then on Friday pulled down 5 targets. 2 acrobatic against 1st team D and team was ready to place him on Roster. However, following Monday found out suffered "Jones Fracture, outside foot bone) and was placed on IR Practice Squad. Dude has great vertical, soft hands and can pull down anything within 6 feet. Already proven great blocking TE and has proven his he can catch just about any 'Garbage' thrown his way.

We have a talented team in all positions, I am worried when we start cutting players, we may lose quite a few players. P.S. Boy we are a young team.

I would suggest trading Pitta for draft picks, whatever I could get!

We have superbly addressed our TE needs so, in my humble opinion, Dennis Pitta's a step backwards, a sentimental tryout of a vet whose "shelf-life" is questionable due to his unsure hips! Therefore, Pitta isn't worth taking away valuable snaps from our young stallions at TE.

Besides, his numbers don't even dent Todd Heap's and he's not mentioned in sentences with the words "Hall" or "Fame", so what's the harm in letting him go elsewhere?

This will be an unpopular position because of the sentimentality and even pity fans may feel but I wouldn't waste a roster spot on him here considering our drafted TEs and returning guys! I'd see what I could get on the market if he insists upon playing!  :oldwiseman:

You asked, balfan; comments & observations?

A trade at this point is going to have the same devastating cap effect as a cut. It is something that is simply not an option for this year.

So - since we can't let him go now, I think it is best to wait and see what he's got. Also, I know this is a business, but I think we need to show some organizational faith in him, if he's working to come back. If we don't think he's ready, he goes to IR. If he's ready (which I still don't think will be the case - certainly not game 1), then we may find a injury that requires Boyle to go to IR if we think it is too great a risk to put him on the PS.

A trade give us another draft pic, unlikely but maybe two late picks! And, balfan, I'm surprised at you! What is "organizational faith"? You can either play the game at a pro level or you cannot - that's a fan perspective not a FO perspective and not something I would have expected from you, man! B)

This year's a wash, financially, already, and gathering another future trade,... hey, it's the "Boldin" thing to do!

TE position is loaded. The first time since Todd Heap and Older but still great HOF Shannon Sharpe that TE has been so loaded. Pitta is a? ?? But all signs point to him playing. But even without Pitta we have a no.1 WR TE Maxx Williams, we have a heath miller type vicious blocker/3rd down and long converter type 10-15 yrd guy with Gilmore. Then we have Boyle this big 270lb athlete with a lot of potential as both a blocker and WR, maybe another Gronk type if he reaches his ceiling. So we are loaded anyway you slice it at TE

Let me just be clear for a minute. I like Nick Boyle but cmon, he is not a recieving TE in the least bit. He ran over a 5.0 40 yard dash and he is so big that his route running isn't good neither. He is a blocker. Gronk can do it all. Good hands, fast. Boyle will never be anything close to a Gronk. Nick Boyle is a pure blocker and maybe once in a while you toss it to em. I just think Boyle is gonna have a tough time getting open with how slow he is off the LOS.

Just to clarify, At UD we don't have a trimester scheduling. We are two semesters with a long winter session. But that is just a little detail. Hopefully Nick can do well in the NFL and be a good backup.
