[News] Late For Work 6/2: Will Ravens Still Add Pass Rusher To Roster?

39 posts in this topic

Here's an interesting coincidence. It being our 20th anniversary as a franchise, the Ravens designed emblem has the Roman Numerals 'XX' to commemorate the milestone. Who's everyone marking as the steal of our 20th draft? MaXX Williams. Obviously his parents had their own ideas in mind when naming the kid. But it's a strange tip of the hat from fate for us Ravens fans.

"Will Ravens Still Add Pass Rusher To Roster?"

Well... I guess we've been thoroughly explained by Ozzie, Harbaugh and others that there is never such a thing as a set position depth. Any position can always get better if a good player becomes available for some reason - and that can happen any time - take the way we got Dumervil or Steve Smith, for example...

So.. .will we add more pass rushers? Might be. Just like with any other positions.

Haha, great find :)

And... look what I found when I googled "MA20": a fishing reel:

So, how about the slogan: "MaXX - for the perfect catch"? ;)

I wouldn't mind seeing Arthur Brown get reps at OLBer, with his quickness and speed, he could be a decent pass rusher...Could also see Means get reps as a pass rushing OLBer instead of 260 pound DE, yet he would have the versatility to play along the D-Line like McPhee did when he was converted to a OLBer...

There are some sleepers on the roster. I remember Ozzie specifically mentioning Steven Means as a guy who could make an impact. Though, Ozzie would also say you could never have too many pass rushers.

We might also get some extra cap money to find one, as i think we get some cap relief today for releasing JJ a few months ago...

Certainly appears at this point that it will be hard to get Gilmore off the field as he has value in passing and running situations. Lining him up will provide no clue as to the play call. The rookies will provide great depth at the very least. Just doesn't seem possible we will see Pita this year.

Don't sleep on Melvin, he was thrown into the fire last year during our playoff run, and played well in the playoffs....I really want him to win the #4 CB spot, his size, and tackling ability would be huge for us....And with today's WR's being bigger and faster, the CB's have to keep up with that....He is my sleeper in camp this year to really shine....

With the mindset throughout the NFL of a low tolerance for players who can't stay healthy, Baltimore must be 1 of the most difficult teams for an injured WR or TE to make the roster. There is an abundance of young talent ready to fight for those spots so the normal level of limited tolerance might be even lower this year. Hate to see any young player set back by injuries which could actually derail their career before it really gets started. Hope Camp heals quickly and stays healthy, along with hoping that both the young and vet players get through the off season with minimal injuries. It has been exciting to keep tabs on the competition for these roster spots.

.Players can be designated, but JJ might not have been, but there is a article that we are 1 of 11 teams getting June 2nd cap relief...

I don't see a need for a veteran pass rusher. Who were McPhee and Kruger before we developed them and they broke out? We have a bunch of young players that are not only cost-controlled but need playing time to get better. Same thing with many of our other positions like receiver, TE, CB - bunches of young players who have a lot of talent and need to see the field, with the advantage of having experienced guys ahead of them to take up the slack. I could see the argument if we'd lost one of Suggs or Doom this year, but we have them, and now is the opportunity for someone young to learn behind them, so maybe by the time that guy's contract is up Suggs may decide to retire and we can fill the void with the emerging player instead of letting him get taken by another team.

Doesn't have to be post June, we just don't get the full amount of cap space since we didn't cut him post june...

We got the full $750K in cap space months ago. There is no additional cap space added this season for Jacoby.

I wouldn't mind adding Dwight freeney. You just can't expect upshaw who has very little pash rush moves to make an impact. We don't know what smith can do until the pads come on an preseason starts but why not add freeney for depth at least. The clock is definitely ticking on Arthur brown. I was high on him when we drafted him an he's got all the talent but something's missing with him. Campanaro has to ball out in training camp or he will end up on the practice squad or ir.

Usually veteran players on the final year of their deal can be obtained for mid-to-low draft picks but we in particular have two problems. (1) What remains of the cap space is likely going to be kept in reserve for in-season injuries. (2) All that dead space we get back next year can and likely will be eaten up with new contracts for lineman and LBs and naturally rising salary numbers.

So obtaining a veteran on the final year of his deal may not be affordable now, and likely wouldn't be a re-sign possibility next year unless we're planning on moving on from Osemele, Yanda and Upshaw.

Why do we really need an older pass rusher? We have Suggs and Doom, and we have ZaDarius, Upshaw and Steven Means backing them up. Besides that, I think we have great interior rushers in Jernigan and Williams, not to mention Brent Urban and Canty who can be effective at disrupting the passers as well. So, I really don't see a need to get an older pass rusher at the cost of one of our younger players not making the roster.

BTW, being a huge fan of Ray Lewis, I just don't know about him peddling that vibration machine on TV man! I don't doubt that Lewis believes in it, but I am a huge skeptic on such gimmicky pieces of equipment.

Me personally, I wouldn't add another player to this roster unless they are extremely cheap depth at a position lacking depth, or due to injury.

If we have roughly $8M in cap space, I have zero issue with not spending another dime of it. It can be rolled forward into next year, or it could be used this year on existing players in the form of an extension.

I, unlike many, don't believe that the Flacco contracto renegotiation and dramatic reduction in cap hit in 2016 is a foregone conclusion, and I think the FO would be wise to make sure they account for that (which I have no doubt they have and will). Carrying over cap space into next season, even if its only $5-6M, is a great way to do that.

As a retired Army officer and former Master Fitness Trainer, none of Ray's or Steve Harvey's pushups would have counted for test and evaluation purposes. Ray failed to fully extend his arms at the top of his pushup and Steve failed to establish a generally level body position by keeping his butt in the air and displaying a V position throughout his pushups. It was good humor but both failed the Army standard! ROFLMBO!!!!!!! GO Ravens!

I wonder if Ray Lewis picked the number 52 as his jersey number from the amount of cards in a deck ? Anybody ?

Except that if you count the jokers, you have 54.

I haven't given up on Camp. If (big if) he can recover from his quad injury in time for training camp, he'll have a good opportunity to make this team. The biggest factor working against him is the success of DeAndre Carter, who seems to fill the exact same role as a slot receiver and punt returner. I understand why many have given up on him, but those few plays where he was healthy he looked damn good.

Camp has too much potential to be written off this early, despite that "injury prone" tag he's beginning to be labeled with , but he has definitely got to make his case this offseason. It's his potential that I believe will cause the coaching staff to afford him that opportunity.

As for a pass rusher, I think we have more than enough talent on the roster to field a amazing pass rush, but if we were going to do so then I think Dwight Freeney wouldn't be a bad situational guy to pick up; for cheap of course.

If/when we play the Colts in the playoffs he'll be crucial. If all our starting corners are healthy we can use Melvin in Dime packages against the colts often used 4 reciever set.
