Jernigan's numbers compared to JJ Watt using PFF

40 posts in this topic

# Name Team Passing Snaps Pass Rush Snaps Pass Rush % Sacks Hits Hurries Total Pressure PRP 1  J.J. Watt       Houston                      632 632 100.0 21 44 54 119 15.0 2

Timmy Jernigan   Baltimore     191 188 98.4 4 7 12 23 9.7

I found these numbers extremely interesting.  If Timmy Jernigan played the same amount of passing snaps that JJ Watt had he would could have the following.  Yes I understand that when he is playing less he is much fresher so it won't work exactly that way, but this is interesting.  I believe Jernigan is going to show the most improvement of any second year Raven.

JJ Watt had 3.3 times the amount of passing snaps Jernigan had.

With equal amount of passing snaps Jernigan 'could' have the following

Sacks - 14.5

Hits - 23.1

Hurries - 39.6

Total Pressures - 75.9

Thoughts?

JJ watt is looking like a top 10 player of all time in the making.

Jernigan looks good..he could be really good..if thats what you are implying then good :)

Also JJ watts stamina and determination are unmatched by anyone in his position.

Yeah I noticed that, it is limited snaps so we will see how he does in a full time role but it gives me reason to be optimistic.

Limited snaps, if you take Melvins 3 regular season games he looks like one of the top corners in the league. We'll see how Jernigan is when he starts for more than 4 games.

Yes, that's pretty much what I was saying, but if it played out in a full season like that it would be pretty darn good.

Agree, JJ Watt is one of the best of all time and his endurance is second to none.

Except Melvin's 3 games came against poor competition. The Browns, Jags and Texans had 3 of the worst passing games in the league, so to extrapolate that wouldn't be as realistic.

Cornerback stats don't care how bad the other teams offense is.

Right now, JJ Watt is totally a different animal in the league and no one can match him unless the rumor of Wozniacki's curse is true.....

The fact that JJ watt can play that well that long is unreal.

Limited sample size helps. Watt may go sown as the best player of all time when it's all said and done. If Timmy becomes a good fraction of that I'd be thrilled.

Those numbers look promising, but I'll reserve judgment until Jernigan actually becomes a full time starter. Watt is the toughest dude in the NFL and plays a ridiculous amount of snaps for his position. Jernigan is a tough and athletic dude too, but I'm not sure he's in JJ's territory. Few are.

That said, Jernigan could build his own reputation. Watt and Jernigan play slightly different roles. JJ Watt rushes a lot from the edge. If Jernigan can get half of Watt's production from the interior, he's dominating. I'll be thrilled if he gets 50 tackles and over 5 sacks,

Yeah, not being as god as JJ Watt is nothing to be ashamed of. We'll see how Jernigan goes as a full-time starter.

The numbers speak volumes about Jernigan's play/potential. Even more so was the vote of confidence we gave him (and others obviously) when Ngata became expendable.

You're comparing production, not necessarily player vs. player, and it is an interesting look. Obviously JJ Watt is in a class of his own, and will be up there w/ the all-time greats.

Lol whoa there. Watt is a generational talent no doubt but let's leave it at that. I agree with you though, regarding the point about comparing him to Timmy...it's just unrealistic. Timmy is already and will be a great player for us. I also think he can be the better sack artist in his prime, but Watt's motor isn't just an asset it's his number one trait. You don't coach that and you don't grow into it, you just have it. That doesn't mean Timmy isn't a comparable player, it just means that using a scaled projection when one guy has a decided advantage in ability over time is a straw man.

It is a little early to anoint him as the second coming of JJ Watt don't you think?? Is Jernigan even capable of playing the # of snaps JJ Watt plays year in and year out? Not easy.

I feel as if any comparison of any current player to JJ Watt is unrealistic

You compare the fact that both Jernigan and JJ have Js in their names.  That's about it.

Well and play the same position in the same type of defense.

Gotta agree. Watt has to be the best player in the league and by a large margin. Not many dominant players, but he rrally takes over games. I like how he's getting reps on ofoffense too now, a use his greatnest can't be kept to one side of the ball. JJ 4 KICK RETURNER!!

Interesting thoughts. The one thing I remember about Jernigan is he fell to the Ravens in the draft. He had some charicter issues that caused him to fall out of the first round. I think this year is going to be huge for him in that he has got a chance to prove the nay-sayers wrong and he is penciled in to start. The pencil is in Jernigans hand it is up to him to write his career.  As far as  Watt is concerned he is arguably the best player at his position. I will be happy if Jernigan comes in and does his part for our team.

JJ Watt wears #99 and Timmy Jernigan wears #97. They're really not comparable. They don't wear the same numbers.

The second nine is a larger number so it would have more material thus making the jersey just that much heavier.

A heavier jersey will slow the player down significantly.

now wait a minute.  Yes I posted numbers, but that doesn't mean I think Jernigan will be the  next coming JJ Watt.  I just wanted to get a conversation going to see other peoples perspective.  Nothing more, nothing less.
