[News] Report: Ravens Sign Cornerback Cassius Vaughn

63 posts in this topic

WOW... I have to give Ozzie credit. He said that he was going to address the DB's this season like he did the OL last season.... So far he tendered Will Hill to another year, Added Kendrick Lewis, Added Kyle Arrington, added Cassius Vaughn, drafted Tray Walker, brought in UFA Nick Perry and that is all on top of getting Jimmy back healthy, Asa back healthy -Webby improving, and Melvin time to improve! That is literally taking out D backfield from a weakness to a strength in one off season. To make matters better He did the same thing at TE (all without taking a significant step backwards at any position) We improved at QB (depth) at RB (depth) at least broke even at (WR) and remains to be seen on the DL (but looks like if we can stay healthy there we could be better then last year)... ohhh yeah and even added another pass rusher to an already stout LB corps. Gotta love a FO that is committed to winning~!

Cassius Vaughn is a solid singing. Remember we do not need him to come in and start. We need him to add reps and add an insurance policy. He is more then capable of that! Vaughn is more skilled then Melvin and Melvin came here and performed admirably for us in a tough situation last year! Adding Vaughn, Arrington, Asa, Melvin and Tray Walker, as depth behind Jimmy and Webb leaves us in a much better situation this year then last year...that is for sure! Good signing!

not sure Vaughn is more talented than Melvin, with a full set of OTA's and camp, my money is on Melvin getting the #4 spot....His size is huge as well...

We could've waited and got like Tracy Porter at CB or even Chris Chester that the Skins both cut for depth and cut Jaid Reid but Vaughn is not bad pickup as well.

it's not bad of a pickup yes we could've waited and got Porter (even though he was injured last year) or somebody else that got cut a better option but Vaughn is a pretty decent corner for depth it a good pickup plus he was with the lions better we make players better here.

Who gets cut to bring this dude in? I think there will be better talent cut from other teams down the road, we should go into wait and see mode.

In just 5 months, Ozzie and C.O. have turned the 2ndary from a major weakness into a strength. Having OZ on our side is so unfair to the rest of the league, it's not even funny... and I love it.

good for depth, ravens have always turned around players careers for the better, hopefully he's another graham and make impact plays down the road.

and OZZIE is not even done yet.

Which part of "depth signing" is so hard to understand?

I dont know why everybody keeps saying this like non starters never get on the field.

what is your point?

again, we burned through about 90 cornerbacks last season.

and you dont need a hundred reps to blow a major play, one will do.

also, i dont know why everybody is coming at me like i said he should or shouldnt be signed anyway.

i offered a quick evaluation of the cat. i dont get why you peple think EVERYTHING needs to be argued.

So you expect us to pick up someone who is a pro bowl player now? Injuries happen, and corners are in high demand. Sorry, but we aren't going to feild a team full of players like Jimmy Smith. If injuries happen really at any position, it will most likely decline in production. The dude is clearly picked up for depth, at least he has experience and can play somewhat. Hopefully we stay healthy, but I think this guy is at least serviceable if we need him.

did i say i expect us to pick up pro bowler?

the way i remember things, ive been trying to tell all of you for a couple years running that the corner market was trash.

of course now all of a sudden everybody believes me, lol.

It should be mentioned he only played for the lions last year.

 we already covered that...

he's not number 2 or number 3 and he may not be number 4 either.  He is depth and you can't have enough depth.  It's not like we are going to have 5 Jimmy Smith's on the roster.

Rashaan Melvin was on tampa bay's practice squad early in the 2014 and finished the season starting against the patriots in the playoffs.

again...depth is not a ban from the field of play.

I have a feeling Melvin or Jackson will be cut. The team has four multiyear vets now and Walker may be the cheap keep..

The point is he is better coming off the bench than relying on him every week.

I knew the corner back market was trash. We obviously saw that last season. But the way you reacted to the signing seemed like you were bashing it. Then a couple of us pointed out to you that this is nothing more than a depth signing. Plain and simple. Don't come off like you expect every signing to be a great player, then we wouldn't argue. I wasn't arguing, just pointing out this is not a player who will probably play a lot barring injuries. This guy is a decent signing in case of injury. He has experience, can play somewhat, and is better than someone like Dominique Franks.

Decent depth with lots of experience. I doubt he makes the final 53 though but who knows what will happen.

surprised how he wasn't signed earlier! He has consistently gotten picks and defended passes over his career. pick six on Philip Rivers and added 2 defended passes to that game... He's picked off the Titans 3 times in two years, and got a pick 6 return when the offense had their heels to the end zone... so that shows he has awareness to make the play.

Wouldn't be surprised if he and Arrington split some time. He is part of a winning tradition and has made the playoffs the past few years playing for denver, then indy and then the Lions... he obviously has some good taste in organizations.

He's already our 4th best option at corner.. He has played next to great corners and has been on winning teams. It seems he is an amazing sub-package player that can step up when needed.

Something we desperately needed last year!

That's debatable. He's ok, saying he's "amazing in sub packages" is a stretch. I'd easily put Melvin above him in the pecking order so he'll be competing with Asa for a spot and between the two its a toss up. And saying he's played with some good corners doesn't say much about him, there's lots of bums that have played with great corners. He's got a decent shot of making the roster but his spot is far from guaranteed, Asa will be tough competition if he can stay healthy

Im surprised nobody said anything, but I know we all remember the year we won the Super Bowl and we played the colts, Anquan Boldin caught like two or three TDs, and the same corner was covering him all those times, and made him look silly...Thats this guy.

not even close.  He's good depth and that is it.

I'd say he is #6 behind, Smith, Webb, Arrington (Slot), Jackson, Melvin, and then Vaughn

Referring to him as a "bum" is a little off base as well then. Seeing that he isn't a number 2 corner... he has made the most of his playing time getting 2 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries, 7 interceptions and two pick sixes over 5 years.

How do you consider someone who has produced in the NFL as depth? Chuck Pagano was comfortable enough using him as his #2 corner back when they made the playoffs.

I love Melvin because he is the prototypical size as a starter... this guy is a slot sub package dude.

Which was my whole point.

I said IT SEEMS he is an amazing sub package player from his stats... so dissect what you want, his numbers tell a different story. He's gotten 7 picks over the last 4 years coming off the bench.

Being a part of a good secondary does mean something... It promotes a winning attitude and I'm sure the "bums" you're referring to landed in Oakland or Tampa Bay or another "bum" team.

I said he has good taste.. Broncos, Indianapolis, Detriot with Caldwell and now the Ravens. He was on the Broncos team that carried Tim Tebow to the playoffs. Top 5 defense. But hey what does any of that mean...

Boldin makes a lot of people look silly, so I wouldn't take much stock in that. He had good coverage and Boldin reached through his arm catching it and had his arm in-between him and the ball... He scored every touch down where I sit by the tunnel.

So because Boldin Moss'ed him he isn't a good corner? There wouldnt be many left in the league at that measuring stick.

.... UPON FURTHER REVIEW:

Boldin had 5 receptions for 145 yards and ONE touchdown.

And he moss'ed Darius Butler #20...  Vaughn was #32

Boldin beat him on a double move but he recovered really well, the analysts even said it was just a perfectly placed ball.

So it WASNT this guy!

and, unfortunately for him, you have to push him down another spot because it's unlikely we'll let Walker go

I at no point referred to him as a bum, i said plenty of bums have played with great CB talent, i never said he was. Don't rely on numbers, stats lie big time, go actually watch him play and you'll see, guy's ok, nothing more. He'll grab you a pick then turn around and give up a big play. It's good that he picks to play with contenders but the fact that he's played for 3 separate teams over 5 years isn't because he's a priority FA. And take second look at the three teams he's been on, all 3 are known for sub par secondaries...

I'm not saying the guy is bad or a "bum," I'm not saying he can't make the roster or won't be any good, all I'm saying is that acting like he's some sort of god send and is "amazing" is naive
