[News] Late For Work 5/25: WR Competition Will Be Tight As OTAs Begin

100 posts in this topic

The competition at WR is going to be interesting but fun to watch. I just hope we get some guys to seperate themselves from the rest early. Not like a few years ago when Boldin left all the guys were talking big but NOT ONE of the guys seperated themselves from the others to take the starting spot next to T.Smith and we ended up with a bunch of average to below average guys at the position.

I hope we keep 7 recievers like S. Smith, Perriman, M. Brown, K. Aiken, Campanaro, D. Waller, and Carter. The most depth I want to see in this roster are Wrs, defensive line, and corners. We really don't need a lot of depth of safeties maybe 4 Lewis, Will Hill, Elam or Nick Perry, and Brooks and TE maybe 3 or 4 in Williams, Pitta, Gillmore, and Boyle. Boyle can probably go to the practice squad so we have 3 TE but if Pitta hurt again then put Boyle on the roster during the season.

I do and as a matter of fact I think he'll be starting, day 1.

What makes you say that?

Pitta went down, had surgery, went down again with no contact and had another surgery. A third injury and surgery may cause enough damage that the once great athlete wouldnt even be able to run around with his kids. He has enough guaranteed money in his contract this year that cutting him wouldn't make sence except for a roster spot. I believe he is only at OTA's to keep his contract valid.

Like most fans I love watching Pitta play so I am for it if he does but what reasoning makes you think he will?

I like Yanda but I hope we do not break the bank for a guard. We did not skip a beat when we let Grubbs walk. Having continuity on the line is great but if we can sign K.O. a lot cheaper, the guy is only 25. My only concern with K.O. is his back. Hopefully he can stay healthy. Don't get me wrong, Yanda is one of the best guards I have ever seen play in the NFL and he is always ranked high week in and week out in his game performances but we have a salary cap to think about.

@WNC-Raven well he did say I think that means he believes he would play so I hope Dennis plays too. If his body doesn't feel he shouldn't play then he shouldn't play but if he okay to play then let him play he another weapon and go to guy for Joe.

Lets be Real.... Do we REALLY think that Pitta will suit up again?????

I really hope tou are right but the way he broke his hip the last time without even being touched I am not so sure. I hope you are right because I really want him to play.

Ya guys I hope he is back and playing at a high level too. However it is going to be a uphill battle for Pitta to say the least.

2 serious season ending injuries in as many years.

As far as Pitta is concerned, none of us really know the extent of his injury, and IMO it is really up to the doctors, if they clear him to play football, they are saying his hip has healed to the point where he can continue playing....But...Of course i'm sure they have made it clear that there are no guarantees that it will hold up, just because of the nature of the game...It will be Pitta's decision, and if he chooses to come back, he will have to prove, and earn a spot....

@cobrajet I wonder should we trade Monroe to free some room for K.O. and Yanda and put James Hurst as LT.

trading Monroe doesn't free cap...

If Pitta returns healthy then "Juice" could be in trouble. They are keeping Williams, Gilmore and Boyle as none would clear waivers.

If Carter outplays Campanaro as a returner then Camp's spot could be on the practice squad.

NO WAY Waller clears waivers and goes to the practice squad. They will keep Smith, Perriman, Brown, Aiken, Waller and Butler.

Yanda will cost them but it will cost a lot more to lose him. They have to pay Yanda and Osemele too. These guys are critical to the entire team's success as we found out in 2013. They need 7 good offensive lineman. Urshel and Hurst proved they are good backups and will be good starters in another couple years....just not now.

If they feel Arthur Brown is ready then this will be Daryl Smith's last year as a Raven. If not then he may end up getting cut. He should be up to speed by now.

These are all good problems to have and show the high quality depth the ravens have at every position.

Pitta will suit up again people he is still under contract and is now healthy and there is no reason for him not to play. As far as comparing Maxx Williams to Gronk, come on Gronk is 6'7 and 270 pounds with 35 inch arms which makes him a match up nightmar. Maxx Williams is an average size TE at 6'4 250 with 33 inch arms. However, I think Maxx will still be a good TE but not as dominating as Gronk.

What I really like about that uniform is that it goes well with the Raven bird shades of dark purple and black. I really like having the Art Modell logo that we won the Super Bowl with and another Ravens logo on the back on the jersey at the top of the there name on the jersey like what the arizona cardinals have. It looks really cool jersey and slick too.

I'm excited about a very promising WR group of Ravens too. But I think we ought to keep in mind the Late To Work spotlight (5/22/15) on how much more poorly Joe does when he is under pressure. (see http://www.baltimoreravens.com/news/article-1/Late-For-Work-522-Uni-Watch-Ravens-One-Of-Worst-Dressed-Teams/dab78346-9568-4af2-a204-51bddc943ae9) The moral of the story is how very important it will be for our offense strategy to keep Joe free from harassment when passing. I know this is true for all QBs but it is especially true for Joe compared to other QBs.  So how our O-line performs when in a passing situation may well be as important as the quality of our receivers.

How will Juice be in trouble? He is the only FB on the roster and played very well last year. I think we need to get him more involved in the passing game. If Pitta returns healthy, the WRs will be in trouble as I think we will use Pitta more as a receiver than a TE. If Pitta is healthy and decides to play, I think we keep 5 WRs and 4 TEs. It will be interesting to watch, just a shame we can't keep them all. Im sayimg SSS, Perriman, Brown, Aiken, and Campanaro are who make it. If we keep a sixth receiver, Butler, Waller, and Carter will battle it out.

@Tru11 I'm confused if trading doesn't free cap why we trade Haloti then. What about releasing him?

It does free cap space, but we still eat the dead money. The reason we traded him instead of cut him was to get something back in return instead of just cutting him and getting nothing.

People seem to forget that receiver position struggled with injuries. It was over shadowed by the fact that the oline was injured  and the running game sucked.

Thompson went down in the preseason and never really became part of the offense.  Jones got injured against Denver and missed like 6 weeks.( This could have been a big year for him, if not for the injury) Stokely was brought in to help out and he only played 4 games.  Mallette got injured, went on IR,  and never recovered.  And even Brown would struggle with injuries from week to week.  Add in the fact that Pitta missed all the season and Rice was much of a receiving threat it could have been worse. Smith and Doss were the only ones that were able to remain healthy.

And Triple "S" is the veteran of these young bucks! WOW! The Ravens can continue the drive that ended against the pats with a TD strike to one of the youngsters to get the season under way! Yeah I think that will do it!

I would prefer to keep Waller and Carter rather than Aiken and Campanaro. It's about the upside, Waller could turn out to be an unstoppable redzone target and Carter is just as good in the slot if not better than Campanaro without the injuries. So I think our receivers should be SSS, Perriman, Brown, Waller and Carter and put Campanaro on the practice squad. This way we could keep all 4 of our TE's on the team.

Carter is just as good in the slot if not better than Campanaro without the injuries.

Based on what? Campanaro showed the quickness to get open at an NFL level. He made some tough catches, including one in traffic where he got hit, and I heard he routinely made contested catches in practice as well. He converted a couple of big 3rd and longs before he got hurt in Cinci. In his short time on the field, he has shown every trait necessary to be a great slot receiver. Carter has never played an NFL snap.

That's the thing Campanaro will always be out due to injury he has always been that way throughout college and now the pros, he is injury prone. He is not effective if he is always injured I want the guy who will be on the field week in week out. Based off what I have seen from Carter in college I do believe he is just as good as Campanaro but without the history of injuries.
