Will Hill

Speaking of Will Hill III, apparently he's 230 lbs now. That's a BIG safety.

I think he's gearing up for strong safety

I'm not wildly enthusiastic about the figures quoted by PFF.  They've shown more times than not that they are illegitimate statistic gatherers.  But Will Hill the best Safety in the NFL?...Hold on a minute, before we go much further...give me  dime so I can call my mother!

Mom is an NFL encyclopedia and she is still laughing hysterically about PFF's characterization of Will Hill over there in the kitchen. Mom says that Will Hill is much better than Matt Elam and that bum we signed from Oakland two years ago and that he has shored up a sieve of a secondary. (She just held up a real sieve for emphasis).  But she's still laughing.

Between chuckles she's calling out the names of better safeties, but they are hard to understand.

She definitely said Eric Weddle, Eric Reid, Earl Thomas, Jimmy Ward, the guy in Minnesota. She's said about 10 names but I can't make them all out she's laughing so hard., but invariably she is right.

Love you Mom!  Can I have pancakes for breakfast?

Did you completely miss the part where it said Hill was the best strong safety, and listed Weddle as the best free safety?

Well to be fair, it was his mother who failed to notice that part of the argument.

Dang 230, I think we'll be seeing him up in the box a lot more like a Kam Chancellor type and will be laying some serious licks this season. The guy has the athleticism and suddenness to support more weight on his frame so I'm all for it.

The guy missed 4 games with the giants and was ranked #2 overall and he missed 6 with us and is rated the best SS. He's a dog

I think he is. I was saying it even before we signed him.  Maybe if he played for seattle he would be a bigger enough name for you. I personally think earl thomas is overrated. He's not sean taylor...

Will Hill is a top 3 SS who played FS very well last year.

The latter comment is reversed since Will Hill was almost always an FS during his NFL career. After seeing time at FS and even slot CB in 2012, Hill took over New York's single-high role in 2013 after it was vacated due to the absence of Kenny Phillips. He has the body of a Strong Safety and has been often miscast as such despite his actual usage. That being said, I've been a fan of his since his days as a Giant and was very enthusiastic about the the signing. He's an outstanding all-around Safety. Very happy to see that the signing has turned out well for us.

I wonder if the Ravens will try to sihn him to an incentive laced contract, kinda like what Greg Hardy got. The issue with Hill wilk be in bonus money because teams get money back for suspended game checks.

Very Doubtful. Just because Hill won't sign it. He has too much leverage and when that happens the Ravens have gotten screwed (see Ngata, Yanda so far, etc...)

He doesn't have that much. Sure, nice season last year, but if he fails another drug test, he likely never plays in the NFL again.

Yea but you have to remember there are 31 other teams that would sign most of which are also stupid and cash flush

With the Ravens, though, Hill has been building some trust and says he’s dramatically changed his lifestyle. Rather than frequenting nightclubs, he’s now bowling and spending quiet nights at home with his daughter.

“I spend a lot of time with my daughter,” Hill said. “I’m at the training facility. I ain’t going anywhere.”

Hill said he greatly appreciates Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome for giving him a chance after the Giants gave up on him.

“Yeah, it’s a good relationship with the Ravens,” Hill said. “Ozzie had a lot of faith in me, and I had a lot of faith in him. That’s my best friend right now. To have me come here and help me with my life, it means a lot.”

Teammates and coaches have praised Hill for how he fit in with others in the Ravens’ locker room. With the exception of the child support issue that predated his employment with the Ravens, Hill hasn’t gotten into trouble.

“Will Hill, he has a lot of talent,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said during a season-ending news conference. “It’s something that we always knew. He also has a great love for the game. Having the offseason, having the OTAs and the minicamp and the training camp is only going to really help him tremendously, as far as being a really good safety for us.

“We put it on his plate a little bit. We’re challenging him for the next three or four months. ‘Are you going to come back a better player than you were when you left here in January, and is that slate going to be clean?’ We fully expect it to be. He just had a baby. He’s doing great with his family, and we fully expect him to do a great job with that, and we’re going to try to help him any way we can with that.”

Hill said he’s in a good place mentally, but is impatient for the season to start.

“I’m great,” Hill said. “This is the bad part right now, just waiting.”

Maybe getting out of NY - settling down, having some support from the team - about to see continued good things. Repay that faith when its time to talk $$

The thread is only about a stats position.  Possibly, a fantasy geek  would care.

We need to lock Hill up this season long term

No long term...he should be offered something, but w/ no guarantees. He is one strike away from being worthless.

We need atleast Yanda or KO and Hill.

I agree, we need one of the guards. Hill and Yanda or Hill and K.O.

It's hard to find good safeties out there.

Ravens can always tag him. This past offseason, he was on the low tender and no one offered him even though it wouldn't even cost a draft pick. That might give you a sense of the interest there is around the league.

While thats true, the Ravens still would have had a chance to match it which meant that teams couldnt lock Hill in at favorable terms over the long term (yes we were in cap hell, but given the risk involved, very few teams would have frontloaded and guaranteed him a ton of money ie poison pilling us).

Next year, other than the tag (which we probably wont have the cap room to use without it nailing us), teams can literally sign him completely risk free.

Idc the one strike thing an issue since we've had several players with infinitely worse offenses get signed based on talent

Ray Mcdonald

Greg Hardy

Hell even AD (who is technically one strike away as well) wasnt traded.

I keep having this feeling that Hill will be next in line to be another Ravens compensatory pick. Just hear me out here...we drafted Brooks and Elam. We signed Lewis to a 3-year deal (who can also play SS) & Hill looks motivated. I just have this feeling that he'll be let go. Can't justify it outside of a hunch.

I know it's hard to imagine is letting go of Hill. He's a really good, top 5 player in terms of talent, but I just feel like we'll give him an offer he can refuse, tests the market, and walks.

Maybe. A lot depends on how he performs this year obviously, but he is young and extremely talented. I don't think any team is going to pay him top money given the risk involved. It's a complicated situation no doubt, but the Ravens are smart enough to know what they have in him and the likes of Lewis, Brooks, and Elam are not close to him in ability on the field.

You aren't making the right comparisons here because those players also have the stigma of DV attached. There isn't really a good comp for him that has recently hit the market.

And DV isn't worse than pot because? (especially now)

What are you talking about. DV is far worse than pot.

In the events of him having another great season and staying out of trouble, I hope we at least offer him a fair deal.

If he wants to test the market, so be it. I'm sure he could find some place that would pay him more. I don't expect this to happen but it would be nice if he gave us a little discount for taking the chance on him and familiarity within the system/area/locker room... Being a consistent contender should also help. I definitely think that's an important factor for players.

You said the comp isnt right because its dv but dv js far worse than pot yet these players all got signed. Therefore hill should be more attractive

Every guy on the team is ONE bad decision from being released.  Hills odds are the same as everyone elses.

Right, he will be more attractive than someone with DV in their past. I never said he won't get signed, just that there is risk involved. Thr question is how does that risk affect his price, and/or contract structure. Clearly his past has already affected his value significantly.

I think the biggest negative on his value is he's one mistake from a year long suspension. That can't be underrated.
