[News] John Harbaugh In Favor Of Extra-Point Rule Change

28 posts in this topic

IMHO, this might increase the number of attempted 2-pointers for teams with inferior kickers - especially playing in open stadiums in windy/rainy/snowy weather.

In normal circumstances, with a good kicker? No.

OK I love the Tucker for fg's.....but why we don't go for 2 every time just slays me.....Its 3 yards and even flacco is good for that every sneak play.....or we run off tackle...short pass to a receiver....I hope we never go for 1 again.....

Maybe because we haven't been very good in the red zone?

Johns been known as a head coach to take risk and I think now with the new rule change he shall take more. Carolina has "River Boat" Ron well ladies and gentle let me introduce you to "Highroller" Harbaugh. I dunno about you but that be a good new nickname for him.

The only thing for sure regarding the PAT changes is that I will probably take my snack or potty break after the PAT rather than get up and go do something else immediately after the TD replay. These changes will at least compel us to watch the play. Scary though that the outcome of a game could hinge on the execution of a PAT.

because bohica5 2 point conversions last year were 47% successful as opposed to taking the extra point which is 98.5% successful that's why

I guess you don't remember our multiple failed (3rd & 4th and Goal) attempts inside the 3, last year ...

I really hope the Superbowl is one or lost because of a missed PAT earlier in the game. Dumbest rule NFL has passed in long time

I'd love to see a rule change that goes like this. A kick afterTD get a point, a 30 yarder get 2 points, a 40 yarder gets 4 points, a 50 yarder gets 5 points and anything beyond 60 yards get 7 points, I think this will bring some excitement to the game and Justin Tucker is the man to do It, We need to get him signed NOW

Of course, he's a special's team coach - 2 reasons why (IMO) - (1) Justin Tucker and (2) i suspect Harbs will be drawing up some 2 point conversion plays now that the window has increased and he draw some mismatches with our big TE's (Gilmore is 6'5" and Williams is 6'4" - dey dem boys!!

Hey lets leave Cundiff alone, he made 96 extra points in a row according to ESPN stats.

Still lay some of the blame for the FG botch in PATS NFC final on the coaching staff indecision.

Not to mention we had a time out available.

Some would say the NFL stripes evened it up the SB with the no call pass interference at the end v. the 49'ers.

Hey we lost one and won the Superbowl ,not bad.

OK, here's another idea. After the TD the kickers from each team line up at the 50 yard line to take free kicks (this means the only people on the field are the kickers and their holders). The defending team kicks first. If their kick succeeds the extra point is denied. Then the offense kicks. If their kick succeeds they get one point. If they fail the defense again tries to prevent the extra point. This continues until one side succeeds and the offense either gets a point or not.

Let's hear from some of the rest of you on ideas to put some interest into the PAT.

I suspect the majority of calls for teams would be to go for the extra point FG. Statistically I would love to know the conversion percentage for all kicks 33 yds or less... that would be a great indicator of how teams would behave.

Maybe because we haven't been very good in the red zone?

I agree we aren't very good for td's once we get inside the 20......But from the 3........joe can walk it in.....just a little imagination.......that our Coach doesn't have......

So, in principal this rule eliminates the FG kicker at the 2 and encourages the goal line stand.  Fortunately, we have always been an outstanding  red zone defense against the run and have a great FG kicker especially 35 and in. I have fears regardiing our O line injuries and huge opponent recievers propelling off the shoulders of Matt Elam. Any team that has a beast mode runner like Seattle likes it (except for the last SB which was a bad option )

The EP kick was originally suppose to be an easy extra point after making a TD. It has always been just that. So now a FG can be much shorter than an EP and it is still worth 3 points. Put the EP back to the 2 yard line. Make the end zones 15 yards deep.  That would open up the goal line offense to new extremes. And you won't see a FG attempt from outside your own territory.

@ellicottraven: As per ProFootballFocus.com, during the 2014 season, 87.88% of all FG's kicked between 30-39 yards were successful. This includes the pre-season, regular season, and post-season.

I don't have any percentages on 2 pt. conversion success to compare that FG success % statistic against... but 87.88% is significantly lower than 99.5%.

Here is where that one guy that everyone hates disagrees. I think that more teams will go for 2 also, but not too much more. If an offense goes 80 yards in 5 plays and have that much success in moving the ball I bet they go for two because the momentum is on their side. What I disagree with you on is the play everyone is calling "Seahawks terrible call". Belichick even said it was a good play call. People assumed the run was coming, even did Belichick. He loaded up on the defensive line. If Marshawn didn't get in the endzone then people would have said the Seahawks were too predictable. If the Seahawks completed the pass it would have been one of the best play calls ever. You know how many times on a play like that it actually has a cornerback read that route and acts on it that fast? Malcolm Butler guessed on the call and he got it right, if the Seahawks receiver (can't remember which one), ran an out route then Malcolm Butler would have let up the winning touchdown. It's just hindsight 20/20. I hate when people call it a terrible play because in reality it wasn't until the interception happened. Lynch could have fumbled if he ran. We don' t know it is all hindsight.

God I am so happy I called it a bad option.    I encourage opinion and that is what you and I do. Bellichick called it a good call because he won.  However, if you have a chance to run it in with with a major plus percentage runner and it could be off  left tackle rather than right or some exotic run the Patriots did not see, then do it.  Even Wilson could have run on a sweep.  You just don't chuck over the center.
