Maxx Williams vs Dennis Pitta vs Todd Heap

74 posts in this topic

I wasn't a Maxx Williams fan initially and since I was faced with havin to being one I thought I'd like to try to get a little excited about him. I figure the two best TEs we've drafted before would make good comparisons.

There's not much Todd Heap college footage, but here's two plays from ASU:

We see some athletic moves here with good body control. He was not the most athletic TE, but he had a great football IQ and was fearless and tough. Big soft hands and quick feet made him a dual threat.

Dennis Pitta:

I see Dallas Clark like receiving qualities: Good hands, low center, crisp slant routes, strong hands, great ball tracking. He intiates contact and often catching in double coverage and always seems to be falling forward.

Maxx Williams:

[don't go there]

I've seen it written that he compares to Jermy Shockey. What I see in the highlites is Shockey-like in terms of running with the ball, but Shockey would blow defenders up or run them over. Williams is not that beastly, but he has surprising athleticism and agility. He also has the slowest 40 time of these TEs including Shockey. Great focus on the ball and good hands.

I wasn't a huge Maxx Williams fan neither but for some reason I still got excited when I heard his name called lol.I'm hoping the experts know something about him that I don't know.I just don't see the freakish athleticism everyone says he has. He's about the same height and weight as Pitta but he doesn't seem to be as quick or fast.Pitta was extremely quick twitch. He juked defensive backs both in college and in the NFL.Just look at the play at the 8 second mark in his video.Heap had the abiIity to make people miss too as seen in his second video.I'm still trying to figure out what Maxx's "thing" is.Gronk has size and athleticism.Graham has size and freakish athleticism.Vernon Davis has track speed.Tony G had basketball skills and was really good at using his body to box defenders out. What's that trait that's going to make Maxx special?

I agree his athleticism's a little overrated, but he's more than athletic enough to be a decent playmaker. People are too used to Eric Ebrons and Jimmy Grahams. I see him as more like a Jason Witten or a Greg Olsen, and the flexibility they bring is huge.

In terms of draft prospects, it would be Heap, Williams, Pitta.

Heap was a 1st round player, Williams a 2nd round pick in a weak draft class and Pitta was a 4th.

Obviously was to early to do a pro comparison.

Have to wait and see at this point. College level success or lack there of does not mean he can or can't make it in the NFL

Eric Ebron?

Whoa.

Outlier Outlier!

Oh boy, let's make Ebron's 2014 the over/under for the coming year.

I'm going WAY OVER, but then I think this receiver Draft Class is taking us to the Promised Land

I've been on the "Ebron is overrated" bandwagon for a while now, but the point is that athleticism doesn't make a player as long as they simply have enough of it.

He gets open and then is a YAC monster.  My guess is he has a good football IQ and vision to more than compensate for the elite athleticism.  He's not a burner, he's not a great leaper, but he can just get open.  I hope it translates to the NFL because I think we're going to need to start immediately.  I didn't have a great opinion of him before the draft and thought for sure that the Saints would draft him at the end of the first.  Now that here,,,,well....let's say that I thinnk knows about tight ends.

Not sure of the point being made or question, but Flacco/Heap would have been a lethal combination.

They played together for three years.

2002-2006 heap with 2013> Flacco would be freaking lethal

Much different than years they were together

We've had just random FAs at TE for the last two years, and Pitta only started for maybe a year and a half and was good, not great. Before that? Ed Dickson and the trailing years of Heap. We haven't had a good, athletic tight end with Flacco before. Someone who is actually a "good matchup". I think Flacco is going to find life a lot easier with a real talent like Maxx. Something along the lines of "Holy crap, the guy I wanted to be open is actually open!".

I think Maxx has the potential to be a super star in this league. He is 20 yrs old, can catch any ball thrown his way and is truly gifted. However, he hasn't played a down in this league yet. So we need to allow him to blosoom under the tutelage of either Pitta or the coaches for a year. Keep in mind, Heap had Sharpe and Dennis had Heap showing them the ropes in their first year here.

Most of the time Heap was asked to be an extra blocker for the line. 2012 Super Bowl Flacco and Heap....BIG BANG!!!

maxx williams has whats called the IT factor. Meaning he just knows how to make plays. Forget 40 times and all that blah. Oh and for a 20 year old his blocking is pretty damn good. He's going to be all round tight end.

Eric Ebron is simply an ed dickson type of TE. Maxx williams has traits from some of the best that have played. Also he might have the best hands out of any.

if you look back i was praying we didn't take ebron in the same we i was praying we didn't take perriman this year.

based on what i saw last year from ebron i feel vindicated.

It is so difficult to compare him to another player.  We did not get through the summer training camps and pre season so we should wait until the season begins, he plays and give him his grade at mid season. The NFL is a completely different entity then Minnesota Golpher football. Too early to compare.

I don't recall you ever "praying" the Ravens not take Perriman before the draft. You've voiced concerns after the pick, but I don't remember you saying anything before we took him.

That's fair but I just don't recall you ever saying anything about Perriman before we took him. I know about your concerns after the selection. I share similar concerns but I'm optimistic.

I actually think tyler Lockett in the 3rd is the steal of all the WR's. Id have preferred him over carl davis who i think will be a flop. He might at best be a marcus spears quality player..just ok . I don;t like his attitude and he def doesn't play like a raven to me. Paul Dawson or Lockett would have been FAR FAR better picks.

Darren Waller is intriguing though.

If you did post that, that's hardly what I'd call "begging Ozzie not to draft him."

I liked Lockett but I had and still have concerns on his size. Really nice prospect though. I do agree somewhat on Davis. His attitude slightly concerns me, mainly reports I hear regarding his attitude. I think you should give him his fair shot though. Wait until preseason at least.

the begging was on elam.

To this day I'm shocked at how our scouts viewed him. I saw him as a low IQ player with bad ball skills.

There were a few others who didn't like him. I'll be honest, I was pretty fond of him but I suppose I was duped. Maybe I didn't watch enough football from the Gators. I'll say that Elam has only proven you right so far.

Back to the thread, Williams holds a lot of promise and I think he can Boyle can become serious contributors here with Gillmore. I think the future of our TE corps is very very promising.
