[News] Justin Tucker Reacts To Extra Point Rule Change

65 posts in this topic

My only concern is I just heard on CSN couple hours ago Bellicheat and Kelly are the two HC's who came up with this idea. Now those are the only two coaches in the NFL that will call anything and everything at any time. So this tells me that because 2 PT Conversions are such a failure from the 2 yard line statistically, given more field to work with you would expect more success. I expect these 2 HC's atleast in this one year trial period, to pull a lot of fake FG 2 PT conversion attempts from the 15 with players like Gronk at NE disposal, and how Kelly utilizes weapons there is no doubt in my mind this is just another TRICK so those turds gain competative advantage.

It gets shutdown after this year, or Make sure to boycott

Plus BB just inexplicably drafted a long-snapper in the 5th round, just to add to your conspiracy.

SIGN TUCKER NOW....no joke. Quit playing around. Kicker money is only going to go up, particularly after this season. Give the kid 3 mill a year for 4 years, he's worth it. DO IT NOW OZZIE!!!!

Yeah, that's my one worry with this rule change - we do have a competitive advantage with Tucker, but his contract expires next year and no extension in sight...

Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders writes, "The 2-point conversion is converted roughly half the time, so the numbers suggest that the smart head coaches will begin to go for 2 after nearly every touchdown except in certain late-game situations, an XP try being worth roughly 0.91 points and a 2-point try being worth roughly 0.99 points." It will be interesting to see if Tuck gets less work this season; after all, Ozzie anticipated this change when he drafted all the 6'4"~6'6" pass catchers.

This is my main concern for this rule - that most coaches will now default to the 2pt conversion instead of the extra point, which actually might end up de-valuing the kicker position. Before, coaches wouldn't even consider the 2pt until maybe late in the game and now Schatz is saying the reverse might happen? Interesting game of statistics here now that this rule is introduced...

I think moving it from the 2 to the 15 is too far maybe the 10. But my biggest complaint is that if you return a PAT, into the opposite endzone, it's only 2 points instead of 6, if you take the ball and put it into the other teams endzone that should be an automatic TD, why just 2 points that is so stupid to me, I thought the nfl like high scoring games?

Why can't they just be satisfied with how the game already is, just ruining the game little by little, first a CB has to practically play with his hands tied together, now they want to extend kicks and take away a well deserved td away and make it 2 points, SMH.

They didn't take away touchdowns. Under the old rules the ball was blown dead as soon as the extra point failed. Now if the defense either blocks the kick, causes a fumble, or intercepts the ball they can return it to their end zone for 2 points. The new rule is an extra point rule change, not a field goal rule change. In the past failed extra point attempt could never be returned for a TD, but now they can be returned for 2 points.

This comment is both a thought but also a question...If a team gets penalized for excessive celebration after they score a touchdown (which is a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty)...Does the defensive team have the option of moving the PAT kick back to the 30 yard line to make it a 48 yard attempt...Or does the penalty have to be applied to the ensuing kickoff ? (Which always results in a boring non-returnable kick that sails out of the end zone.) Does anyone know if the defensive team has an option on this penalty ? I think if the defense did have the option...it would make for a very interesting decision to be made for either of the two head coaches (both on offense and defense) if this particular 1 point PAT attempt was for a tie to send the game into overtime. Any thoughts or comments ? (I ask this question and comment on this because excessive TD celebration penalties have become a part of the game lately and called quite frequently. This would be a very interesting decision to be made by either of the 2 head coaches if  7 points scored late in the 4th quarter were needed...instead of 6 points...to send the game into overtime or 8 points scored would win the game!)

That would be hilarious if the opposing team got two penalties after the play to make it a 60 yard field goal for one point.... But I'm pretty sure they just are going to stick all penalties till the kick off haha.

Does this mean that Belicheater is STILL on the rules committee?!?! If that's the case, it's a travesty. How in the world can the league allow a man that has been involved, to some degree, in not one, but Two cheating scandals to be on the rules committee?!?! It defies logic if that's the case. And even if he Has been removed from the committee, his recommendations on rules should NOT be allowed. Shouldn't even want his input. You know, even if he, personally, did not hold the camera to film his opponent's practices, or deflate the balls himself, those things happened under his watch. That means that He's responsible and is held accountable. Just ask Sean Peyton. He'll be glad to remind everybody that what happens under a coach's watch is his responsibility. Get Belicheater off the rules committee, if he's still on it, and shut him up!

Tuck will have NO problem with this rule. He will still remain one of the most accurate kickers in the league. Just GET HIM EXTENDED!

I suspect that is precisely the reason why he and his agent aren't signing on the dotted line just yet. It sucks for us, but they're banking on it.

Yep!  Makes you wonder if Tucker's agent was holding out on his deal until AFTER the owner's meeting. Knowing that the extra point rule was going to possibly change at this meeting, if he did purposely wait, it was a genuis move on Tucker's agent's part.

I'm not sure that would get it done. What's the franchise tag # for kickers? Is it 3 mil, or is it more, or less? Tuck obviously knows that we'll tag him before letting him get away, and this rule increases the value of kickers. Wonder what the tag # will be after his contract runs out next year?

Hey Tuck... We, the fans, understand... Completely. Just a couple few years ago, we were in the same predicament after Lee Evans dropped his TD pass, and we had to go for "3" to tie the game... Cundiff missed that one. There was heartbreak everywhere in #RavensNation. Fortunately for us the following year, your kick allowed us to go on and make it to the Super Bowl

Hey, he's the guy that had the goal posts extended 5 feet higher....  because he didn't like the outcome of that Ravens game.

If easy points are a problem, they should stop neutering defenses rather than punish kickers.

Well said, and spot on!

With this latest public relations fiasco that Sleazy Kraft launched and the almost infantile and laughable rebuttal to the Wells Report, it was clear to me that the owners basically shut Kraft up! They could very well have threatened to use the fiat in their agreement to push him out or force him to sell. He wisely backed down and accepted what I believe to be a very lenient punishment for a club involved in perpetual cheating.

As for Belicheat and Tom Fraudy, their legacies are marred by consistent cheating. I personally don't have any respect for them anymore. And I have to admit I admired them somewhat prior to these constant bent rules and downright cheating. Fraudy was a 7th round pick for a reason when he was drafted, but nobody knew that he could throw the balls mighty accurately with a 10 psi ball because he perhaps had small hands. All in all, every victory they've ever had is now tainted and the teams they've beaten with deflated balls ought to know they've been cheated out of a victory as well.

With this context in mind, how can anybody think this punishment was anything but lenient?? I am glad their reputation finally is what it needed to be - Marred and soiled!

Hey, he's the guy that had the goal posts extended 5 feet higher....  because he didn't like the outcome of that Ravens game.

I know that. This cheater has WAY too much pull in this league. How many times do we hear about suggestions made by Honest coaches who have integrity? Nowhere near as many times as we hear about suggestions made by this guy that, apparently, has no conscience. Yeah, we have to listen to or read about what this guy, who's Always looking for a way to, if not break, bend or skirt the rules to gain any kind of advantage that he can find in his "win at all costs" attitude. All coaches are very competitive by nature and their desire to be successful and keep their job. But history shows, without a doubt, that Belicheater has definitely gone over-board and allowed his quest to win to define himself as a cheater. It's really kind of sad. I really hope that he can, somehow, examine himself, develop a conscience, and redefine his priorities a bit. For his own sake, I hope he can change.

Great point! We'll be watching "Outdoor Arena Football" in 20 years because that 9 Point play orchestrated by the Irsays hasn't been squashed as a bad idea!

Just wondering what it will be next with billicheat n Kraft. Somehow modified cleats, to gain better ground etc? That's page 201 in between the lines of the rule book, Brady.

Should make for a more interesting game that's for sure but the old school fan in me likes the rules of past. It seems like they just want to keep tweaking and changing. I miss the days were defenses could go out there and well, play defense. I think that people need to understand that tho we have the best kicker in the game today it really puts the pressure on him and kickers in general.

Being a kicker, your a hero today and and quite possible an outcast tomorrow; a monster running away from the villagers, pitchforks, and flames. Lets not forget what happened to a guy like Scott Norwood a man who had the "golden foot" hardly(or never missed) and then chokes when it really mattered the most. He is now a villain in Buffalo no mattered what he did before he choked. How about are own version of "Scott Norwood" Billy Cundiff, nice guy great leg chokes in the AFC championship game, gets fired bounces around to several teams, and is never was the same again.

Warren Sapp used to say on Nfl network (before he got fired for not paying his ladies of the night right lol) there's 3 people on my team you don't mess with my my coach quarterback and kicker(or something along those lines. I agree with this because I think a couple of things can and will happen.

1. Kicker prices will go up ( I hope we get something done fair for both the Ravens and Tucker)

2. A lot mor 2pt conversions which then could devalue the kicker a lot more thus coutering scenario number 1.

3. More misses especially in non dome bad weather stadiums, lets not forget what Justin said is true we play in the cold rough and tough north weather gets worse as the weeks go on.

All in all I just hope what ever happens it works for us the Ravens nation.

Go Ravens!!!!

I'm not worried about Justin Tucker making field goal, he's great but I have an Idea, how about the league makes up some rule that the further back you kick ,the more point a kicker puts on the boards, example, a 30 yard kick is 3 points except after touchdowns which Is 1 point, a 50 yard kick Is 5 points anything beyond 55 yards is 7 points, should make for an Interesting game,Tucker's the man to do It too, no sweat, the Ravens need to get that kid signed NOW before they regret It

Another long time tradition is being tore down for the sake of making it more entertaining, nothing more. This means the better kickers will be asking for more money than ever before and possibly dilute other positions. It will be interesting if teams will use an extra million or two or three to invest toward more two points specialists than toward above average kickers. I can understand tearing down traditions for safety reasons but for entertainment? I guess I am just an old man with ties to the good old days and have a little bit of a hard time accepting changes in the game of football. Who knows, maybe I will enjoy this rule change in time, will be interesting to see how teams response after touchdowns.

The new rule is an extra point rule change, not a field goal rule change. In the past failed extra point attempt could never be returned for a TD, but now they can be returned for 2 points.

i think hes aware of that- it was just the way he worded it that caused the confusion. however i'll let him speak for himself.

Correct. Mathematically, in the long run, teams will be better off from a scoring standpoint by going for 2 every single TD and ignoring the PAT all together.

Certainly, game flow/situation can alter this. The only thing that possibly could make it more advantageous for kickers in the short-run is that NFL teams may want to get a more accurate sample over a few seasons to determine what their typical conversion percentage is on 2PC.

But yeah, in the long run, I think smart coaches/organizations will realize that this largely devalues kickers to a certain extent.
