If you could only choose one which Raven will breakout in 2015?

Requirements: No Free Agents (Arrington, K. Lewis), No Rookies, No obvious studs (Flacco, Steve Smith, Forsett, Suggs, Doom, Mosley, Jimmy Smith, ect.)

By "breakout" I'm referring to players who have never been a major contributor for us but could take the next step in 2015 (ex. McPhee in 2014)

Well I had Wagner and mcphee in this last year so that turned out pretty well.

This year is a lot tougher because you've eliminated so many options with the rules. I will go with Brandon Williams on D to take another step toward becoming a truly dominant player.

Despite the rookies brought in I am going with crocket Gilmore. We spent a fairly high pick on him last year and I say he doesn't suddenly become an afterthought. Leads our tight ends in snaps and is solid as a blocker and receiver.

Webb goes down forcing Melvin to play. The improved melvin then keeps the #2 cornerspot and Webb is traded.

that criteria is real tough. I would have to say Brent Urban if he is healthy. Also this is pure wishful thinking but hopefully something magically clicks with Arthur Brown

I wouldn't have eliminated a few of them as options - like jimmy smith for example simply bc he was injured most of last year and though debateable still hasn't had that "breakout year" - I guess it's all in how you view the term "breakout "... Could look at it like breaking out to the top tier in their position in the league , or just breakout in a team sense. Still a good poll , makes it more interesting with the options givin. With what is listed id pick either marlon brown or upshaw.

What would you want changed about the criteria? To me it's more interesting to limit it to players that don't get hyped up a lot who could potentially turn heads in 2015, McPhee and Rick Wagner are great examples of that from 2014. Guys we have seen in our system in previous year(s) and not been major contributors who we think can take the next step.

The expectations of the rookies have been talked about heavily already and a lot of people think Flacco, Will Hill, Jimmy Smith, ect. will have a big year so they don't really need to overshadow the less talked about players, it makes people think/discuss outside the box instead of just going for an obvious candidate.

Look at it this way if I posted this in 2014 with big name players and rookies included nobody would even discuss guys like McPhee or Wagner.

Yeah I did consider that, I just thought Jimmy would win by a landslide though. Like you said it makes for a more interesting poll since Jimmy has already shown he's a top tier player at his position when healthy.

I guess I should clarify more, my definition of "breakout" for the sake of this poll is: a player who has played for us but hasn't been a major contributor who could take that next step in 2015 and become one (ex: McPhee and Wagner).

I see what you mean- that makes sense.

Tough to differentiate between who I would LIKE to have a breakout season and who I think WILL have one. Well obviously id like all of them to have a breakout year but that's not realistic lol. Honestly I could see 2 or 3 of them having a huge year though. One guy id really like to see have a big year would be Crockett - but it's so hard to tell how much he will be utilized with the other tight ends and the new OC.

With McPhee out, we need Upshaw to step up. That's my pick

lol, I'd be amazed if Upshaw does anything to help with the lose of McPhee. He just isn't a pass rusher. Their not similar players in anyway

I think it'll be one of the following:

Jernigan, Upshaw, Tyson, Gillmore, and Marlon Brown.

I see Brown being featured a lot by Trestman due to his run blocking and receiving. He's also in his third year, so this should be his year. Gillmore looked pretty promising and I think he'll be featured a lot more entering his second year, because he's shown me he can catch and block. Trestman and Joe will like that.

Tyson has looked good and bad at times but mostly solid. Entering his final year, I think he'll be well positioned to be the next DL from this team to get paid. I see him and Jernigan getting a lot of playing time. I can see Tyson start at LDE with Jernigan rotating behind Canty, or even rotating with Tyson.

As for Upshaw, I actually think he could be used like McPhee, rushing the passer from the inside against the center or working against the G while Suggs or Dumervil get double teamed. I don't see him being very effective at OLB rushing the passer unless he's kept clean, but I like it from the interior.

I don't think Upshaw is great standing up, but I think he could be effective as a DL rushing from the interior while Suggs or Dumervil get double teamed in a role similar to McPhee.

I wanted to say Marlon but to break out, to me, he'd have to surpass his 7 TDs in a season and I doubt that happens.  So I'm going with Timmy Jernigan.

I see Jernigan as a force on the line, both stopping the run and collapsing the pocket to make things easier on the aging OLBs.  I see Jernigan having 7 sacks this season from the line

I agree with this assessment. I don't think Upshaw will ever have the speed to get around a tackle and thus if he's lined up outside, unless there's a scheme-dependent mismatch (I.e. both of his hits on Big Ben) he's just not getting to the QB from the edge. That said, lined up inside where it's more about strength and skill than speed, he can use his uncommonly strong upper body to beat interior lineman.

Well we could always have a shift in the DL if he's at OLB to give him a clean shot at the QB. He's effective in that regard. That's how he hit Ben. Use the LDE to take on the RT, the NT to occupy the center and right guard, while the LDE attacks the center and LG. You can use the right OLB to rush the LT to occupy his attention. Upshaw should be able to get a free hit on the QB through this scheme.

I like the criteria you set.

I'm really surprised only one other person picked Urban. There is so little depth at DE ahead of him, he could easily make an impact if he stays healthy.

Timmy Jernigan(Voted) and Marlon Brown are my guys.

Jigg is a pass rushing DT with the ability to defend the run. An every down Defensive tackle and shows consistency as well. Really love his game. I think he breaks out for us.

Marlon Brown is also there because the coaching staff seems to be very high on him. Trestman also loves big receivers and plenty of WR's break out in the 3rd year. I think this could be a big year for Brown, or a big dud.

I don't think Juice should count, he's already been a very good starting FB and its unlikely he'll get more snaps.

I'd like to say Asa or Melvin but since we now have 3 all but automatic starters both are looking at decreased snaps barring an injury.

Upshaw would be nice but he just isnt a prolific pass rusher from what we've seen, so i don't think the loss of McPhee affects him too much.

I like Brooks and Levine but we have starters at safety and Brooks may miss a significant part of the season.

I'm going with KLM, i love what we've seen of his game and i think if he can stay healthy (and the injury didn't change him too much) he can be a force at either DT or DE.

Crockett Gilmore

I know a lot of us are hoping that Maxx is going to be the go to tight end right away, but tight ends seem to struggle in their first year and Pitta is probably not going to start, so I'm guessing Crockett is going to be the guy. Plus a lot of people talk about he's just a blocking tight end, but his recieving abilities are underrated imo

It's obvious that guys like Jernigan and Williams are going to succeed. They've already done so in starting roles. I said Urban because I think he can be a starter despite being on IR all last year. That would be a pretty big surprise.
