[News] Dennis Pitta 'Optimistic' About Playing This Year

74 posts in this topic

I don't know if I misunderstood you but are you saying there's something wrong with me pulling for him to come back bc I want the best for our team? Which happens to be the exact same thing he wants... I'd like for pitta to be happy, he wants to play football! It would suck to never see him on the feild again , I'm a ravens fan- I'm not a life coach. That being said if he wasn't cleared or his family was opposed to him making another comeback that would be a diffrent story- but evidentally that's not the case.

I'm not sure how, but you clearly misunderstood me. It's pretty screwed up to openly admit that you only care about Dennis Pitta the player, but couldn't care less about Dennis Pitta the human being. Oh well, at least you were honest, and that counts for something right...? Sorry, but not so much in this case. I want to see Pitta come back as much as the next the next guy, but there does come a point where some things are more important than the team. And to most normal people quality of life after football is one of them.

Considering all the draft picks, I hope he comes back slowly and the right way. If he is really going to do this then there is no point in rushing it like before or at least it felt that way.

Nothing would be better then Pitta and the potential Maxx has. I just hope for Pitta's health that he isn't pushing it too far

clearly I didn't misunderstand you- and obviously you must have misunderstood me- bc in no way shape or form did I say that I didn't care about Dennis pitta the human being and that I only cared about him as a player. Not sure how you got that out of what I said bc that couldn't be farther from the truth. It's funny to me that after some of the other things I have read openly disrespecting him as a man you took issue with what I said. Everybody interprets things differently I guess.

Yep... I guess so.

Injuries are a funny thing in the NFL, you just don't know when they will happen!!! But like what was said above, being healed is different then being in football shape, for in football it's a constant hitting and jarring of the body. Will the healing come undone? Who knows!!! But we do know one thing, everyone's body is different and heals completely at a different level over time, and only time will tell!!! I truly hope that Pitta is healed completely and can take the hitting and the jarring that come along with NFL football for Pitta is one of the best tight ends in the NFL and we need him!!! But some injuries do take longer then others to heal, but we will see!!!

The Age Thing? In Pitta's case age is not a factor, for two years he wasn't taking hits, laying it out to snatch a ball, nor practicing in any way, shape or form. Secondly, he has had two very freakish injuries that I don't understand and I'm not sure the docs have it all figured out either. But as long as the tissue hasn't started to die for lack of blood supply as in Hercschel (sp?) Walker's case, Dennis can think about coming back. You can't forget the fact that this is one very tough Dude, outside the hip which doesn't seem to be related to any kind of a "hit". In the playoff games, prior to the Super Bowl win, he caught balls crossing the middle of the field and got into some vicious sandwiches, he being the meat. I don't want to comment regarding Ed Dickson, but I can't stop myself. Dennis was behind Dickson in the draft and the entire first year. Dickson could not hold his position, he lacks Pitta's hands, he is not a 3rd down, ironclad guarantee catch and 1st down artist, like Pitta, and he drops the ball. A throw has to be way off the mark to not be be Pitta-zized, and the guy will catch half of those. Number 5 is a better QB with Pitta is in the game, not great without. The stats document what I'm saying, he catches a high percentage of the balls that come his way, top-10 in the league percentage. It has to be pure hell to be off with an injury requiring little or no activity to then work yourself all the back into NFL shape, if Pitta had any reservations about playing he wouldn't go through with it. Everybody is going to have their fingers crossed when he gets back, that it won't happen again, but in the end he is the only one who can decide with family and Raven input. We are all pulling for you #88

He needs to retire. Sorry but football isnt worth ot. He has a degree and hes smart. He has a great future ahead of him.

Its also interesting he wasnt even in the top 10 for TEs when he was healthy. People are elevating his status just because of the injuries. But he was and is a middle of the road TE. He just looked so good because Dickson was so bad. Maxx I think can put up better numbers and Gilmore will be a damn good 2.

You are saying what you would do if you were in his position. It is his life. What is or is not worth it is not your choice, it is his.

I guess you are using yardage stats to determine who is middle of the road. Stats work well in determining the value of a guy in the fantasy game, but I am 100% convinced that we are not a Super Bowl champion without Pitta. His status in my mind is based on that and not whether his stats made him a top whatever number in the league standings.

Will Maxx be better than Pitta? Given he's considered the best in this class and was taken second round ... I guess he should be. Will he be better than him this year? Maybe, but I think we need to be careful to not set unreasonable expectations on a 21 year old rookie.

And that's why he's taking his time this time around.  He was back in 4 months last time.  This time it's been double that already.  I think everyone is concerned with his life after football.  None more than his parent's and his wife, I'm sure.  They know and understand him and what he wants in his life.

Have you ever looked back and wished you'd done something, but didn't?  If we all walked around and didn't do things because of risk... or we were afraid of how it might affect us in the future we'd live pretty boring lives, don'tcha think?  He wants to live doing what he loves to do....

Which is exactly why I said I get it

I'm sure that's kind of the plan. Get him back as the starter by midseason or so. I never once counted him out. People are skeptical and worried but he is a huge asset to our team. I hate to sound selfish bc I do care about his life after football but this team needs him- Maxx is such a young pup and needs pittas help to really make the transition. Crockett helps too- but pittas experience and the fact that he's one of the only players left from the Super Bowl squad is really important.

I completely get you. We get neg for speaking the truth. Why throw him into the fire when yeah he's ready but ends up reinjuring his self. Let him pace his self in to gain that confidence. That's the most important part. We know what Pitta can do but a lack of confidence can cause us not to have the Pitta we once have. We need to make sure he's fully confident and ready to go 100%

If he wasn't cleared by a doctor I would be the first one to tell you he needs to call it quits for his family's sake. But he was- and most of us are here to discuss the ravens and football. Somebody said earlier " why would you only care about the cap hit when this guy is injured and putting his body on the line to entertain us?" Which I actually agree with - it's messed up. But isn't that what a lot of us do all the time with players of a lower caliber? Players get cut all the time- players get injured all the time - and I usually don't hear ppl being worried about THEIR life after football. No- we say things like - "he's not durable enough to make the team" - or "he's always hurt he deserves to be cut" just bc they might not be as good as the next. But I wouldn't expect anyone to treat them like they are less "holy than thou " just bc they are talking about things in a football perspective- even if I don't always agree with it. Would we be singing the same tune if this was the same situation for someone like jah Reid for example? Pittas a good guy- which makes it really tough. But none of us here (I'm assuming) know him in his personal life or are friends with him. Even though a lot of ppl act like they are. If pitta read this thread he would probably think we were all idiots and just be like "dude I just want to play some football". My main point was none of us are guidance counselors- it's ok to care about a guy and wish him the best- but ofcourse we are rooting for him to come back and beat the odds. And even if he doesn't he will still go down as one of my favorite players and have plenty of respect from me. Edited by January J

really wow? So many things I want to say, but I'm going to be respectful and say just show some class. This man is putting his body on the line to do something he loves and so you can be entertained and you care about the money? wow!

i care about his legs falling off in our uniform..........its not about money.....we already are on the hook for that........ITS HIS LEGS.....somebodies gotta tell him he's gonna be handing out towels this year whether he likes it or not......so ....you want him to take a roster spot in the condition he's in?

you don't know what condition he is in. If he's healthy only the docs and Pitta himself can determine that. Besides, if he goes on IR a roster spot is still open.  Players in the NFL used to play with broken bones. Hell Ronnie Lott cut off his finger so he could play. If this is what he loves and he wants to risk his body for it who are we to judge? As long as he takes the time to make sure he comes back with the least possible chance for injury I have no problem with him being on this team
