[News] Late For Work 5/12: 5 Reasons Recently Cut CB Kyle Arrington Makes Sense For Ravens

76 posts in this topic

"cut" is slang, and used interchangeably as a synonym for both "waived" and "released".

Generally when people are just trying to get the point that the player is no longer with the team across, they say cut. The team or fans of the team getting rid of the player can say cut and not be concerned with which term is actually correct because the result is the same for them either way: the player isnt with them any more.

"Waived" and "released" are business terms.

When you're waived: your service with your current team is terminated and you must pass through the waiver wire unclaimed before becoming a free agent. This is what happens to every player with less than 4 years of career. Its not a new rule.

When you are released: your services with your current team are terminated and you are at that very moment, an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team you like. This is the case for every one with a 4+ year old career.

Thanks for the explanation!

Bio, here is a good link that does a great job explaining the difference btw "released", "waived" and "cut".  Hope it helps.

Thanks, I'll give it a look right away!

Edit: OK, now I know how Moss got on the waiver wire in 2010: "A vested veteran only goes through the waiver system from the trading deadline in midseason through the end of the season." (from that article you linked)

So, it means Arrington is not on the waiver wire and so he can choose where he goes. Great.

(That said, I think he'll end up back in New England - just like Edelman did last summer - but hey, we'll see.)

CSNBaltimore.com's Bo Smolka says he would be "shocked if the Ravens don't kick the tires on him."

^ And just because this statement was made; I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens didn't kick the tires on him.

I hope the fact that Walker has been having trouble staying with Perriman says a lot more about Perriman than it does about Walker.

I was gonna say the same thing- I think it's more of a compliment to perriman than it is a knock on walker.

Why do people believe Steve Smith will get cut? Was I the only person watching the games where the 36 year old was the only person on our offense when it was stalled for quarters like in both the Bengals games and several others...? I really don't think this team would have went to the play offs at all last season if we didn't sign Steve Smith when we did. Most the other receivers had trouble getting open against average cornerbacks and Steve Smith would still somehow get open all season for the most part as a #1 receiver at 36 years old.

Agree 100%

Probably a combination of both. I'm sure Perriman is a physical mismatch for a lot of corners in this league, and I'd expect him to dominate rookies and UDFAs.

On the other hand, we know rookie secondary players, and particularly corners, often struggle for at least the first year in the league, and Walker is just a 4th round pick. I would say, based on adaption to the league alone, if we get any positive contribution out of Walker as even a nickel corner, I'd consider it a positive rookie season.

I'd say Walker has the looks of a possible ST contributor or borderline gameday inactive for most of his rookie season. And that should be acceptable for most Ravens fans.

Cut this season? Highly unlikely. I think its more likely you see somebody like a Brown/Aiken/Campanaro not make the roster than SSS.

But, I do expect him to have a "reduced" role, and I'd also expect 2015 to be his last season with this team.

I was thinking Steve Smith, Jah Reid and Chris Canty could be on their way out. Admittedly, two quality vets but we have a lot of quality young players. Lots of time to speculate. :)

No way Steve Smith gets cut.

You're making it sound like the only reason it hasn't yet happened is because Ozzie didn't feel like getting one...

Reality is a somewhat different.

I'm aware that it takes more than a snap of the finger to make it happen, but seemingly this is a position the Ravens frequently struggle with for whatever reason. However, your point is duly noted.

Why Arrington makes no sense......he's no better than Webb,Melvin or Jackson. We have all the second tier corners we need.

Carter may make it because of special teams but not as a receiver. Waller is a lock. Brown probably as well. That means Aiken and Butler are out. Campanaro gets the nod as well due to special teams. This will change however as at least one or two of these guys will go to IR.

the patriots have Chung and McCourty at S.... and they have Logan Ryan and Bradley Fletcher, Malcom Butler and Chekwa at CB.... they are very high on ryan and fletcher and butler was the super bowl hero... they lost maybe the greatest CB in the game in Reevis and a very good one in browner and didnt flinch bc they are confident in their young guys... I would be surprised if they dont make a play to retain Aarington but I hope they dont and I hope we do!

Levine to safety? Now this speaks volumes. Even though the Ravens won't own up to it, Elam was a big mistake. He is a hole in the defense wherever he plays. Tired of the lame excuses being made for him. This year should be his last chance. He has done nothing since being drafted a #1. Whomever thought this guy was worthy of a first round pick should be fired.

That would be the Raven's GM....something Oz, Ozzie something. Probably a new guy, don't really know. But you're correct, he should be fired. Good suggestion. ^_^

Except for Jimmy Smith being solid, hopefully he stays healthy all season. Ravens don't have the best quality at DB but serviceable. It's nice to see plenty of depth at that position after last year. And the WR and TE positions are as good and deep as they've ever been. Ozzie went offense this draft. The defense should be solid and now the new OC Trestman and the Ravens franchise QB in his prime should be able to keep up with the other high scoring offenses around the league. I have high hopes for this season. They were that close to a SB last year, this year should be no different except winning a Lombardi trophy.
