[News] Ed Reed To Announce His Retirement

88 posts in this topic

Not sure anyone mentioned this, yet. But I've always felt Ed Reed built a 1st ballot HOF résumé.

After Troy Polamalu retired ESPN and others wrote about how he might be 1st Ballot but it's not as clear cut as it were a few years ago.

- with Ed retiring in the same offseason there is no way 2 Safeties would ever go 1st ballot together.

I agree that Ed is a HOFer without a doubt. I can go on and debate this for hours with anyone. When it comes to him and palumalu entering the HOF, I believe this actually helps both of them. Ed hasn't announced his retirement officially but whenever he does he'd be eligible 5 years after his last playing season. That means he would be eligible a year before Troy. Ray Lewis will be eligible the year prior. If all 3 were in the same year is say yes that's tough. But 1 "new generation" guy every year will become the norm. With Ray Lewis entering in a few years, it will be tough to exclude his partner in crime Ed the next year. And it will be even tougher to exclude Troy after that as these 3 guys revolutionized football ;)

I will never part with my #20 jersey. It's a prize to me just like Ed Reed will always be a prize to Ravens Nation. Long live #20!

My favorite Raven. Have a great retirement Ed. 20th year of Ravens history marks the year that #20 retires. What an amazing career.

i think their is a strong chance that both Reed and Troy can enter together. Both different positions but their two of the top safeties that ever played the game. Real game changers, especially Ed. His numbers speaks volumes. No way they deny either of them first ballot HOF rides.

Favorite Raven of all time. First jersey I ever bought. The guy was simply amazing. So glad that he got a ring before he hung them up.

OUTSTANDING! C'mon home to the nest, Ed! :29:

Perhaps he may, in time, join our coaching staff but there's too many money opportunities out there in broadcasting!  :D

I guess that cheat Tom Brady will sleep good tonight. Just make sure Ray and Ed go in the HOF separately. It would be cool but I like to see the spot light shine separately. A new Raven added every year.

I'm not going to lie; there were times that Ed Reed irritated the heck out of me with the way he acted and with some of the things he said. His constant, "I'm retiring", "I'm not retiring", his keeping us guessing about whether he was coming back to play, leaving us wondering if we had to plan to go without him, the crazy statements that he would sometimes make, the constant criticizing he would do. But, you know what, I am SO HAPPY and feel we were SO BLESSED to have such an exceptional talent, a SURE Hall of Famer, on our team that I think it was ALL quite worth it, ALl of it. I think that Ed Reed is the best safety I have ever watched and I can remember watching NFL football all the way back to the 58 Championship, "the greatest game ever played." I know that makes me a dinosaur. I only have three Ravens jerseys, but Ed Reed's is one of them, along with Ray Lewis and Joe Flacco. The Ring of Honor is well deserved, Ed, but you've got a much bigger one coming, the Hall of Fame.

So true, Mystigo, the broadcasting booth probably does await him, but I would Much rather see him instilling his knowledge and experience into our secondary; the sooner the better.

Definite Ring of Honor and Hall of Fame. Simply the BEST. Ed set the standard that players today try to reach. The bar was set high. Ed was "The Man"

Right now, I don't know how the the Players' Association views players like Ray or Ed coming back to their teams and doing some Ad Hoc tutoring, but I'd welcome their input in breaking down film and study habits for our young Ravens! :18_1_328:

There may be a clause that addresses that! :eyes:

Reed compering himself to Sanders is probably legit, but not for the same reasons. They both actually deserted the one and only team they ever played for. Sanders left the Lions hanging out to dry, by just leaving and never letting Detroit know about it, to try and replace him. Reed left B'more after a Super Bowl for the almighty dollar. There are two big differences though. Sanders was still on the top of his game when he left, while Reed was pretty much washed up as he exhibited in Houston and NY. Also Sanders WAS never heard of again while Reed has been all over all types of media for the last two years about this, play, retire, play retire deal.

In Barry's defense, when he did announce his retirement, he clearly stated that he utilized the time (off-season) to think very strongly and thoroughly about whether or not he wanted to return. Now, yes, it may be argued that he could have made the Lions aware that he was "Contemplating" retiring, but he didn't really know what he wanted to do until he, finally, made his decision and announced it, and his decision was to retire. Barry Sanders is, and always was, a high quality man who deserves a great deal of respect for the way he carried himself and his charitable ways. I still remember him helping his Church and buying his Mother a house as soon as he signed his first contract. He thought of, and helped, a lot of other people. It has always bothered me when he is portrayed as an individual who "stuck it to" his former team. Knowing the kind of man he is, I will never believe that he Ever intended to intentionally hurt the Lions. Everybody deserves the right to think things through and make sure that they are doing what they really want so that they can do their best to avoid second guessing themselves later. Barry Sanders truly is a Good man. He, in my opinion, does not deserve that kind of criticism. Personally, I think his way was much more admirable than the way Ed Reed Constantly kept the Ravens wondering whether he was coming back or not with his ever conflicting statements. And, please, don't think I'm hating on Ed. I'm a HUGE fan of his. It's just that I'm a HUGE fan of Barry Sanders, as well, respect him a lot, and don't like hearing or reading criticism that I honestly don't think he deserves. I have Never heard him say anything negative about the Lions organization. No disrespect meant towards you, as we all have the right to voice our opinion. This was just mine, and nothing more.

Nah! You can still say that any time you want. Everybody will always remember exactly what you mean and how you feel.

happy for him but sad for the football culture cuz we lost the best ever safety in the game and we aren't seeing another one in a very long time. Ed's instinct on the field is just beyond imagination. I wish him the best for his post retirement and hopefully he came back to coach on our secondary.......

Man, how perfect it would have been to retire in 2012, with a ring, together with Ray Lewis, with an interception at the Super Bowl...

Tremendous career, consensus first-time HOF, at least in the "definitely deserves" category. Have a great life, Ed, and thanks for all the fish!

Good luck and best wishes Ed Reed. Ray Lewis and Ed Reed dominated the middle of the Defense for a solid decade.

Maybe Ed can get his own TV gig.......

I hope Ed can join the Ravens coaching staff in the secondary. Not that our secondary coaches need help, but Ed has expressed a desire to coach in the past. Plus, who better to pass the torch to teach the men we draft, how to play like a Raven, prepare like a Raven, and dissect game film, other than the likes of Ed. I have so many fond memories of Ed roaming in the secondary, and destroying the days of many great QB's. Ed...THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES!!!! Enjoy retirement, but I do hope you still have more to contribute to the game. REEEEEEEEED!!!! I will still be donning my Alternate #20 jersey every Sunday!

Man, I miss Ed Reed. If that video montage of his career highlights doesn't give you chills then you're not alive.

I didn't even think of last season counting as a year accrued towards 5 years away. Since he didn't play on a team at all. Just let it float right past me lol
