Odd men out at receiver

Some may think Perriman might not be a starter but there's really no question about it to me.  The last time a Ravens 1st round pick didn't start as a rookie was 2003 with Suggs (and I'm intentionally not including Jimmy who got injured the first game on the opening kickoff because rumors had him being a starter up until then).

Perriman will start unless he absolutely bombs the offseason because this team simply needs a deep threat and his first round pedigree will make him a starter.  Even Torrey, who actually did bomb his rookie offseason, ended up starting because the team needed a deep threat.  Also, Smith Sr. will likely be a starter but I see a 3rd WR being added to more plays than not and Smitty being moved to the inside a ton.  With John already stating that his role will be reduced, I simply have Steve as the 2015 slot receiver (meaning he'll take more slot snaps than anybody else).

Steve's shifty style is far more suited for the slot and honestly, I can't see them bringing in a Campanero or Carter as a 3rd receiver over a Brown or Aiken.

Torrey end up being the starter because Lee Evans foot or ankle was giving him problems to the point he had to be held out for some games in which gave Torrey enough room to make  a impact . The Ravens actually traded for Lee Evans because their own receivers weren't impressive enough in  training camp/preseason and the same may actually happen if the current group of receivers don't impress enough as well. John Harbaugh made the statement that Steve Smith was  getting a reduce role before Torrey Smith was actually a offically a free agent and went on to sign with  the 49ers

I don't know for sure but maybe Harbaugh thought there was a good chance Torrey could had been re-signed but at the same time hoping a rookie and some unproven starters would give Steve Smith more opportunity to see the slot or reduce his role may not  be   100 precent realistic. It can definitely happen but we shall see.

I honestly think it's best that The Ravens try to keep Steve Smith fresh as much as possible but if no ones steps up then Steve Smith could be looking at another season where he's the number one target. I know Camp just recently got injuried but any thing can happen concerning the wide receiver battle.

Yeah, Torrey became a starter after Evans went down but that's kind of my point, the offense needed a deep threat. They did trade for Evans after Torrey bombed (Doss and Williams actually looked good that offseason btw) and Evans was supposed to be the deep threat.  He went down so they went back to the guy who sucked between May and August because speed was needed.

And I'm not sure I agree about John thinking we'd resign Torrey.  Did they even make Torrey a real offer?  I'm pretty sure Ozzie and company would let that head coach know their intent well beforehand.  Even Torrey was fairly confident it was his last season as early as week 16 or something so John should have known also.  Plus reducing Steve's role is to keep him fresh later in the season, not because they figured they'd have Torrey around

Oy vey!

Michael Campanaro suffered quadriceps injury during Ravens' organized team activity, severity of injury still being determined, per sources

Seems he's going to be out for a while. Looks like DeAndre Carter is going to get a chance to show his worth with Campanaro's injury.

Stinks for Campanaro I wish him the best and hope it's not serious. Right now someone else will have a shot at getting a leg up on return duties lets see who wants it the most. I just hope the young group of WR's are more hungry than what we have seen in the past. Like the group we had here when Boldin was traded everyone was talking the talk but none of them seemed like they wanted it none of them took hold if the situation and delivered.

If Campanaro injury lingers longer than expected or he suffers a setback maybe the team can put him on the PUP list get him back after Week 6 fully healthy. This could give some of the other WRs like D.Carter, Waller the chance they need to get more reps and impress the team..

Unfortunately, you can't depend on Campanaro. He'll be a player that has issues week to week. And it's a shame because he's a good receiver.

Well here's hoping he becomes a Brandon Stokely or better . Stokely had great hands but was injury prone like Camp seems to be .

I think Camp is faster .

Don't give up on Camp just yet!

The Ravens staff got him ready for training camp last summer and he had a great camp with no injuries. I'm hearing that the problem is he over does it and doesn't respect recovery time when he is training on his own. If he comes back in training camp 100% and stays that way like he did last summer, he will be on the 53 because his talent will be better.

I wouldn't give up either but he's in an unfortunate and tough spot. I think back to that conference Harbs and Ozzie had with the fans. A fan asks a question about Camp and was basically raving about him but Harbs made it clear that Camp would have to compete even if at the return position. Now i kno that's coach speak in most cases, but it's true Camp will have to compete and OTAs and Minicamp is where most of those opinions will be formed about who's going into camp with a leg up. For whatever reason people around here think Camp is a lock because of his 9 catches last year, but in reality he's gonna have a dog fight on his hands to make this team and if 4-5 of these young WR really impress in camp while Camp is out he falls way behind.

Mine is a later reply, with the benefit of having seen Camp suffer yet another injury. While admitting it is being reported as a minor quad muscle pull, it still can't help his chances. I can't imagine how this won't make the coaching staff a little less confident of his ability to stay healthy, thus stay on the field, and justify a roster spot. Listen, I'm one of Camp's Biggest supporters. He has impressed me Greatly with his talents. I believe that he can be a special slot receiver, But, only if he can stay on the field. With this newest set back, and us having signed DeAndre Carter, as much as I want us to keep Camp, I'm a bit concerned about his ability to hold onto his roster spot. Now, Carter will still have to show a similar skill set, and prove his Own ability to avoid injury, but if he does, then as much as I want Camp, it could very well be a difficult call. I have said numerous times how much Camp plays like a Wes Welker, and he does. What I actually said was that he plays like a Wes Welker Type of receiver. And, boy did I get hammered for that! But, really, I Never compared him to Wes Welker. I said Only, that he played like that kind of receiver. I can't see how anybody couldn't see the similarities in their games and skill sets. I really, Really like Camp, and think that if he could just find Some way to play tougher he could be So valuable to us. SSS isn't going to be around much longer. In Fact, this very well could be his last year even though I know he's signed through next year as well. When he Does go, Camp, on ability alone, could step right into a starting position as our slot guy and, I think, truly become a star in this league. But, that's all predicated on him finding a way to stop getting all these injuries. Were it not for his injury factor, I think his spot on this roster would be an absolute given, but now, I can't imagine that our coaching staff is not starting to have questions forming in their minds about whether or not Camp will ever have the durability to play at the NFL level. I sure hope he does, but I think that if he has even just One more injury, they just might let him go. He's shown too much in his limited time on the field for me to believe that he would clear waivers so that we could PS him, and even if he somehow did, at some point during the year when a team suffers an injury to one of their receivers I believe he would get snatched away from us. I know that several people on here have dismissed the IR idea as a bad one, but in this case it just might be a better option than losing him in an attempt to PS him. I'm just hoping against hope that this injury really is minor and that Camp can Finally stay healthy and continue to show his numerous skills once he has healed again. He just can't afford yet another injury. If that happens, I think his fate as a Raven would pretty much be sealed. Man, I'd hate to see that happen. I want this guy to succeed. And I just want to throw out there that I like Waller too. Well, I guess I should say I like his potential really. A 6' 6" red zone target would be awesome to have. Paired up with 6' 5" Brown and a good pass catching TE, which I believe we have, should improve our red zone success, which we need to do. I believe we have some tough decisions to make with our receivers and will find ourselves having to let some pretty good talent go. That's a pretty rare situation for us to be in considering years past.

I see it going as Smith, Perriman, Brown, Carter, Aiken.

Camp and Waller going to PS.

cant see us risking losing our 6th round pick. You might have those 5 correct but if thats the case then we will hold onto 6 receivers.

So it is decided.

Camp to 'IR'

6WR & 4TE?

That is a lot of weapons..
