Welcome to Baltimore: Darren Waller

I never knew Waller played S and DB in highschool, just pretty interesting fact

I can just imagine how much trouble a 6'6" safety could give to a qb. He'll be constantly tipping passes and knocking away the ball.

Most players played on both sides of the ball in HS, especially your athletic/skills position ones. In my Al Bundy days, I played WR and FS.

So Gerry Sandusky says Waller is not a project, he's a weapon.  Clifton Brown says he will make the 53.  And Ryan Mink will add an article on Waller's stock rising later.

This is the difference between Waller and the other 6'5+ guys (Streeter, Moore, Riley, etc).  Waller has been improving consistently since he got here on a pace we have never seen from a 6'5+ drafted guy in Baltimore.  Objectively, I can't think of too many WRs we've drafted that have had this kind of steady improvement.  No, I'm not saying he's a starter day 1 or that he's a missing piece.  I am, however, saying the potential is there and the consistent improvement gives serious hope to those cheering for him

Let's see if there's room... Steve Smith Sr, Breshad Perriman, Marlon Brown, Kamar Aiken, Michael Campanaro makes 5... if we carry 6 it'll be between Waller, Jeremy Butler, and a few other camp bodies.

There's no room for short WRs anymore after SSS retires!

Making sure Darren Waller makes the team will work out like it did when we decided to go with Justin Tucker over Billy Cundiff. Mark my words!

i think the key with waller is to make sure we treat him to a certain style of QB play

he must be be given 50 50 go up and get its..

its really about putting himself in position...he's smart football IQ wise..unlike a lot of players his size and position. ..( 34 WL score)

I'd say Waller should be able to do everything Torrey was doing, but also be used for jump balls (as implied).  Of course those jump balls can be in the endzone or just 7 yards down field when needing a first down.  If he can truly keep using his body to shield defenders then he could be a great first down target

Interesting story, he was actually 5'11 in high school and was a mid grade recruit.  Then he grew 7 inches his freshman year and played WR.

Well we could always use him as a extra safety in those hail mary cases....

I remember the Falcons did the same thing with Julio in the divisional playoff game against the Seahawks.

I'm just hoping Waller gets a few good targets today.  But good game or bad game (all players have both), he just has to make the team at this point.  He's shown to much growth in a short time and his potential is too high

I wanna know how defenses plan on stopping a 6'6 240lb WR streaking up the seam at a high 40 time.

not trying to derail here, but can anyone give any info on how waller is doing compared to other late round WR's from this years draft? like kenny bell, dezmin lewis, tre mcbride, and ty montgomery specifically? those were some guys i wanted in the 4th/5th round and i admittedly wasnt a waller fan during the draft.

Press him at the line.  That's the biggest weakness I noticed in last week's game and at practice a few days ago.  He still has some work to do against press coverage.  He's a big guy, but he's still learning to use his body in that regard.  His release off the line right now is a little sloppy, which lets the DB knock him off balance.  With Engram, that's something he'll definitely learn.  Right now, it's a work in progress though.

This is an area where most big WR tend to ironically struggle.

Typically because of the level of talent they face in college, I'd assume.

and smaller shiftier guys like antonio brown or edelman, they just straight up embarrass db's who try to press cover, i guess shoving a db away by brute force is harder than just putting the right stutter step on and leaving them in the dust.

Maybe. I've always thought that they could get away with being lazy at times because of their natural gifts going against usually unrefined talent at CB. Then they struggle when they go to the pros and meet coached up and technically superior and sound CB.

Yeah, I was pretty much expanding on it. I'm not sure it's right, but that's what I'd assume as well.

I can't imagine coming into camp and getting your first shot to the chest by someone like Jimmy.  I'm sure that makes you realize what you need to work on lol

Apparently Kenny Bell has looked pretty good, and Montgomery has done alright, though he's less likely to make an impact in year 1. Lewis and McBride haven't been bad but they're farther down in the depth chart for their teams and will probably be weekly inactives this season unless someone gets hurt or just plays really badly.

kenny bell was one of my guys but after taking perriman i was hoping for either a more refined or a larger WR(which we got) but my guy was dezmin lewis. just read he is still dealing with a leg injury, im gonna be following the bills for sure to keep an eye on him, right now i think waller may be legit for the future, but dezmin lewis' tape looked really good, he really had all the tools and ability.

I think the bigger wrs struggle with press bc they are just a little slower off the line. You have guys like brown or are small and quick, so that first step to beat the press is easier for them. Guys that are bigger ie waller, they need room to build their speed up bc they aren't quick, they're fast if that makes sense. Basically agreeing with you
