Waller could be our version of Calvin Johnson. Put him through the route tree with Joe, see if this big target doesnt become a Flacco favorite. Forget what round he was drafted, anybody remember what round Jerry Rice was drafted?

I'm not sure if you're serious.

That big WR hype is in full effect

Yeah, don't get me wrong--I've also clamored for one of those big WR for years. I also like Waller and I think he's got a really good shot to make the team. With that said, the Megatron hype is a little farfetched and reminds me eerily of Stephen Hill. I think heart separates WR so we'll see if Waller has the heart. I really do think he has the athleticism, but comparisons to Calvin Johnson are a bit of joke at this stage

I think a lot of us, myself included, look at Perriman as the replacement for Torrey. While that is clearly the intent the more I think about it why can't Waller? He's big, tall, and fast. Just tell him to run fast in a straight line. Defenses have to repect a guy with his measurables. Bam...replacement for Torrey.

but perriman isn't Torrey's replacement, he's our long lost #1 that we've been searching for. But you are correct, Waller is a more likely candidate to replace Torrey, I mean hell they ran the same 40 time and Waller does just about everything better than Torrey based on he little we've seen

nope. But for the future maybe. I'm just saying if one of these 2 guys are projected to replace Torrey as almost strictly a deep threat, and the other replaces smitty as a guy wh works the whole field, I would think that would be Waller and perriman, respectively.

Not saying that's what's happening, just saying that if we are talking about the future than I think perriman has a better chance of playing with a complete skill set than Waller.

I would love for Perriman and Waller to play so well this season that they both earn the starting job next year.  It's practically a given for Perriman due to his draft pedigree, unless he flops.  If Waller ends up a starter next year that would mean he had a pretty good 2015.  Plus Joe's never had potential deep threats at both starting WR positions.

Waller has build up speed he may have had the same 40 time as Torrey but that doesn't mean he is the same type of receiver.Taller guys usually are much more stiffer in the hip than shorter guy..I think it's fair to say Waller can't do much damage on a drag route, wide receiver screen, slant and etc like Torrey can. Can he be a deep threat like Torrey? sure especially since he is 6'6" .

And now for something completely different or "The Breshard Perriman Backup Plan".  Something contemplated in esoteric circles.

Something old, but something new, in regard to the F.O.

Yes....It is

so Waller is going to be our #2 going into the season?

if not you make very little sense....

No....and Yes

Wallet with a couple more dropped passes and also fumbled once.

We'll see

Regarding the 60 yard shuttle, Waller was among the top performers for WR's beating out Kevin White among others

I think my optimistic comparison for him right now would be Martavis Bryant, would be thrilled if we got that

Interesting read.  I liked the stat about him having the best of the drop rating.  But sadly, its really hard to take that site seriously when you read the third paragraph:

"The Ravens wasted no time attacking the 2014 receiving class, selecting Breshad Perriman with the 20th overall pick...."

Really guys, you had one job.

Clarence Moore, Demetrius Williams, Elon Riley and Tommy Streeter come to mind.

Funny, can't remember a guy named Elon Riley?

I had hopes for Tommy Streeter.  But hope is all there was. His hands were horrible.

Having trouble remembering the other two as  well.  One was tall one wasn't. One started with optimism.

For every guy that makes it and becomes as good as an Anquan Boldin, theres hundreds that crash and burn and so you've pointed out a few of those crashers.  It's easy to pick a crasher, because most crash. If one plays the probabilities one might compare a 6th rounder to those other guys.  But for me at least, this is pure talent assessment support and so it is for the Raven's front office.

If Waller has a weakness it's that his hands are a bit small....his "wingspread". It's only 9 inches. I'm 5'10" and mine is over 10 inches.  But he's got incredible soft hands. In my day I was a ball magnet and I believe it takes one to know one. All I ever wanted was a replacement for Anquan Boldin and to my eye, this guy fills the bill.  Now, He'll be a fast and tall Boldin too, even if his hands are a degree less.

If he stays mature and finds even 1/4 of Boldins swag, look out.

Waller will be fine.  He won't be Calvin.  What he'll be, in the long run, is a bigger, stronger, Torrey Smith with better hands.  He'll be a pretty good #2 to Perriman's #1 eventually

Answer me this, what is the difference between Torrey and Waller both in their rookie years? Heres how i view it, but i dont know as much as most on here

Torrey and Waller Both have pretty close 40 times (4.36 and a 4.4).  Torrey obviously seems quicker right off the line but wallers size he needs to get a going to get that speed because the size of his strides.  They both seem to be raw in their routes.  I think waller has better hands but i may be wrong.  Deep ball tracking, im not sure.

Keep in mind i am comparing rookie torrey and this is why?  Torrey got thrown into the lineup after boldin went down (right?) against st louis, why cant waller get that same chance? or is it more determined by the amount of talent we have at wr now compared to then?

It was Evans that got injured, not Boldin.  And in all honesty, Waller right now is a bigger version of Torrey with better hands.  Torrey couldn't run routes to save his life as a rookie (or later on) and that was Waller's issue coming into the NFL.  Only thing is, Waller seems to be improving a lot more than Torrey did his rookie preseason.

Now in terms of why can't Waller step in like Torrey did, 2 reasons.  Draft selection and the other WRs.  Torrey was a 2nd round pick so he was going to be given a shot at someone point.  Waller as a 6th rounder isn't privilege to that same opportunity, he definitely has to earn it.  And Torrey was competing against a guy drafted two rounds after him (Doss) and an undrafted WR (LaQuan) and both of them were also rookies.  Waller is competing with another 6th rounder, technically, who the coaches already liked (Campanaro), a 1st rounder (Perriman) and 3 other guys that have already gained a decent level of respect from the coaches (Brown, Aiken, and Butler).

If this was 2011, Waller would be no worse than our #3 WR.  Hell, we may have never even gone after Evans.  In 2015, he's going to have to fight hard, which he has been doing, but still may be an inactive on gameday should he make the 53.

There is a reason that NFL scouts had Waller as a 5.4 grade at the NFL combine. You guys are touting him up so highly that you are just going to be completely depressed when he fails. Granted, he may prove everyone wrong and turn out well. But until that happens and he performs against actual number 1 defenses, I will go with the guys that have been doing scouting all their lives.

Also, Torrey had an NFL combine grade of 7.59. Perriman had a grade of somewhere around 6. Once again, these guys could be completely wrong about these guys. But, Torrey was a better player coming out of college (to the experts)

Who?  Smitty, Perriman (who's hurt), and......?  Brown, Aiken, and Butler were undrafted.  Campanaro cost a 6th but wasn't picked up until the 7th round.  I'd bet none of them had a grade much higher, if at all, than Waller so this is a weird reason to discredit the guy.

And I'm a fan of Torrey but his college tape certainly wasn't better than Perriman's college tape so I'm not sure how much the actual draft points should matter if Torrey beat Perriman by that much

Really?

Do you really believe Draft Position may affect which WR's get first crack out of the box?

I think we play the Denver Broncos in week 1 and if memory serves they had a very highly rated defense.

The coaches are not going to consider Draft Order in these decisions. They will factor Game Readiness, Ability, Knowledge of the Playbook and minimizing mistakes in that regard.  Draft Order and seniority alone will be non factors.

Personally, I don't think we have a number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 receiver.  S. Smith is up there but this is going to be a Corps by Committee and when separation occurs there will be our top receivers.

Did you bother to read the board post that I quoted? He was saying that Waller was better coming out of college. I posted the combine grades of the so called experts.

I think the Combine Scores are objective based upon performance in respective position classes.  If there is a subjective element it would undermine the scores.

I'm not talking week 1 but you can believe that Perriman will get more chances to succeed than any other WR.  History shows it with Baltimore also.

Look at 2011.  Torrey was not only the worst of the three rookies in practice, but the worst in preseason also.  But when Lee Evans went down, who got the shot?  All NFL teams give more chances to their first and second rounders than they do their 6th, 7th, and undrafted.  How long did they hold on to Kindle?  They never tried to replace Oher.  Jar Reid was a 3rd rounder they traded up for and look at all his chances.  Higher draft picks simply get more of a chance.  Even Terrence Cody started a full season.  Arthur Brown and Kindle are the only top 2 round drafted players that haven't started in the Harbaugh era.  One fractured his skull and the other apparently is struggling on an unfathomable level

I dont think draft selection would make much of a difference, to an extent.  If waller out plays someone, he outplays them, they wont look at the draft pick.  Now that guy may stay on the roster but doesnt mean he will start before someone else that outplayed him.

Yea thats what i thought about talent on this team compared to that team as far as the wrs

Ill be honest, i have no idea what these grades mean....

I wouldn't trust NFL.com's draft grades. There's a couple decent draft experts on there but as a whole they aren't very good at grading players.
