Dang... With McPhee that is a very very strong group

Especially adding in where they were drafted

I wouldn't even call Urban as injury ridden. It's only his first injury.

I thought there were injury concerns coming out of UVA which is why he fell to the 4th but I could be wrong. I am excited about him though if he can stay healthy, he is a guy you will see all over the place on the line.

Yeah, I'm the same. He looks like a (very) poor man's JJ Watt and that should terrify the other sides given our DL record.

Realistically he should be considered an extra draft pick for this year. If he remotely pans out we could be looking at one of the best front sevens in franchise history over the longer term.

Speaking of which, with him and KLM coming back, who needs a secondary?

The DL is so ridiculously young and talented and loaded with defensive ends and tackles. Key veterans surrounded by young and cheap talent with high ceilings. Love it.

He just looks and sounds mean, watching him play he looks like he uses all of his huge frame. Really like this pick.

Just saw his reaction to be drafted in round 3, reported from Ravens main page that he was ticked off that he was drafted that late.  He should be round 1 material and he's going to look for serious redemption.

I love this pick too; can't wait to see him in action....

PS: kind of weird that every year, I'm more excited about preseason than the regular season...lol

The best part about this pick is we can use him as a rotational guy this year, much like Jernigan. I think that'll be huge. I really like this DL we have and I think it's going to be really really good. I see Upshaw being used similar to McPhee, because we used Upshaw as an interior DL before.

We have moved Upshaw all over the place in the past so it wouldn't surprise me if we see him in other areas. My biggest concern with him is if he can get a pass rush going, McPhee flashed the ability to do it his rookie year while we have yet to see Upshaw show the ability to be that type of player.

It's certainly easier said than done but I think Upshaw could bring pressure as long as it's schemed.

Maybe I'm missing something here but I feel like a lot of teams who needed DL help were sleeping big time on him in the 2nd and especially early in the 3rd. I was convinced that he would be the Steelers pick in the 2nd after we nabbed Maxx, I was actually getting bummed out that the Steelers would salvage that situation by at least coming away with Davis. The fact that we were able to get him an entire round later blew my mind and I just couldn't comprehend a talent like that at a valuable position falling so far.

Apparently Davis felt the same way, he really did seem genuinely shocked that he made it out of the 2nd round entirely, let alone late 3rd. I anticipated that Perriman had a real shot to make it to us, never did I even remotely expect Williams making it to us in the 2nd, and if you told me Carl Davis would make it to us in the 3rd I would laugh you out of the building. I think when the Davis pick was announced there were quite a few war rooms that immediately wished they had a mulligan, Ozzie always does a great job keeping the DL stocked in the mid rounds and other GM's know it.

You have to remember Ozzie let him drop 3 rounds as well essentially. And its not like he rushed to hand the card in. Tbh I think Davis's tape turned a lot of teams off.

For example,

Tested as a slightly above average athlete

Took plays off. Showed he was capable of performing every down so he has the contract year mindset. - Big turn off

Was not as dominant as he shouldve been consistently

A lot of his production came in relatively few games

All of the above imo means that you are a late 2nd to 3rd round pick on most boards.

That being said, I do think we got a steal as he was definitely better than quite a few players on the board.

Yeah I am a bit wary after a certain other DT with work ethic concerns pre draft but at the same time I do like his chances here as well as the value we got him at.

Also seems like high character guys.  You really have to love the game to play DL.

Yeah I feel the same way. I'm not sure but I'm cautiously optimistic. I think it could go either way. He'll be a boom or bust.

That seems to be pretty much this entire draft, so much for Ozzie only liking to hit doubles

Yeah I think this draft will either be another 2011 or it'll be more of a 2010. I'm not sure how it goes but it could go either way.

My guess is that it is something in between, some picks will work out, some won't, which ones will and won't work remains to be seen I guess

On average 2-3 players in a draft class end up being stars-solid starters and the rest end up not really panning out.. I dont know why but carl davis seems like a poor mans young chris canty.

I'd actually would call him a poor man's Haloti Ngata. Now, that doesn't mean he is anywhere near Ngata yet, or even that he rise above a rotational player, but they both have a similar body type and style of play. Both can take over games, something very rare for a DT, but both have questions about their motor. Davis wasn't quite the player Ngata was coming out but they both have similar aspects to their game. Brent Urban is definitely who I would compare to Canty. Both are really tall, athletic 5 techs who ahve some very nice pass rushing ability. I think Urban is the guy to look out for in camp/preseason who might earn a solid spot.

I think that's a great assessment. I will say that Davis has a lot more attitude than Haloti and I think that will serve the personality of our team. Urban is definitely comparable to Canty...hopefully he can put it together on the field.

Am I the only one who gets concerned when they hear rookies talk about how what they are learning in the NFL isn't very different than in college? I bring this up because Davis said in his interview that, and I paraphrase, the Ravens' scheme and the practice isn't much different than what they did in college. It's almost like you're downplaying the change and the significance of the change from college to pro. I always get concerned when I hear players say this, especially and primarily rookies. I'm hoping I'm reading into it a little much, but I recall players who didn't pan out for us saying similar things. Maybe I'm just being oversensitive, though.

Buck Allen basically said the same thing about USC, I think they just don't want to sound overwhelmed or like their school didn't prepare them adequately, these guys take a lot of pride in the programs they come from and don't want to paint them in a bad light by saying the speed of practice wasn't what they are used to.

Plus this is just rookie mini-camp, I actually take them at their word when they say it's not a big jump from their college practices.. because it's not supposed to be. It's just meant to let the rookie's wet their beaks and get familiar with the coaching staff and the NFL practice environment. I wouldn't read that far into it, let's wait until TC starts, that's where the real grind begins and we find out what these kids are really made of.

^ I remember Mosley saying the same thing about an easy transition and he was right. Said it was basically the same minus the lingo
