[News] Round 1: Ravens Select WR Breshad Perriman With Top Pick

90 posts in this topic

The fact his father had NFL lineage is a benefit as the work ethic and adjustment to this game level can be passed on.  I think he

is exactly what we needed.  His drop rate can be reduced with camp competition and pro level coaching. Engran must have jumped out of his chair when he learned his team wanted a first round playmaker. I'll bet Joe can't wipe the grin off his face.

Good grief the draft has just started. Just because we got a WR first does not mean we can't get a good CB or safety in the next few rounds. Some fans can not be made happy no matter what we do lol. Go Ravens.

I agree. You know who is still on the board? Eric Rowe. Solid free safety for two years that changed to corner his senior year and does it all and is good at it. I bet the Ravens look for him to possibly slip down to us hoping the run on cornerbacks is done. I'm also hoping Maxx Williams or Devin Funchess sneaks their way down the Ravens way. I like the Perriman pick but it still doesn't mean the Ravens are done drafting offense....

The thing with Breshad is the other picks are to get after the QB or defend the receiver. So Ozzie and Co. do their own go route and pick the guy who can catch and run. Smooth operation.

I just did a ton of research on him. I compared him to the top 10 receivers of last years, and this years, drafts and he might be the most talented one out of all of them. Now remember, that has nothing to do with the on field performance, but with height, speed, hand size, vertical jump, arm length, and strength, he is the superior all around receiver. Kevin White and Perriman are almost identical, but Perriman is faster. One scout clocked him at a 4.16 at Perriman's pro day. AT 6'3 THATS RIDICULOUS. Guys…. If we can get him polished the sky is literally the limit.

notice you didn't; talk about his football skills..you talked about his track skills

He isn't polished at all. He doesn;t track the ball well and gets lost in his routes. Unless he suddenly discovers how to run routes and locate the football this grade is a D from me. Its not as bad as the elam pick ..but it sure as hell isn't a great one. I'd have traded up to get Dupree.

I didn't think he'd drop that far honestly. Glad he did. Keep the ball high and he excels. Most of his drops tend to be from balls thrown below shoulder level. Shouldn't be a big problem with the long ball. He's a bigger faster T. Smith with more upside. Can't complain about this choice. He'll have a much better QB throwing to him. That should help with some drops.

And remember Joe F, when he misses, tends to throw high, not low.  If they can coach up this guy with his other weak spots he should be a natural for the kind of QB Joe tends to be.  Will be fun watching this WR progress during training camp.

We essentially replaced Torrey with a somewhat thicker, taller, and faster (if anyone thought that was possible) guy. While Torrey got a 40 million dollar contract, we got this kid for 5 years at a post- 2011 CBA rookie wage scale.

I'll take it.

If anyone is interested, the 26th picks salary breaks down like this:

2015 - 1.4 million

2016 - 1.7 million

2017 - 2.1 million

2018 - 2.5 million

With option for 5th year 2019 - 6.8 million

It's a 5 year 15.5 million contract.

Compare that to the 40+ Torrey was demanding.

This is how you build consistent winners.

Plus they get another 4th rounder next year!

Torrey Smith had problems with drops his first year and everyone thought he was a bust. Turned out OK, didn't he? This guy is bigger and faster than Torrey. Reminds me of Julio Jones in college. Made the great catches, dropped the easy ones, mainly ran by people. Then got paired with Matt Ryan in Atlanta and became an All-Pro.

After Initial disappointment last night I think it will be okay. Hopefully with a team like ours and some of the best coaches out their I think he could turn out fine. Good Luck Breshad and

welcome to Ravennation!!

Breshad is the ultimate feast or famine pick. His physical and athletic profile are just as good if not better than most of the wr's out there. His problems are drops and stiffness while running routes, two things you need your first round WR to be good at. He also has small-ish hands compared to some of the other top flight wr prospects which might be troublesome. Thankfully, he seems like one of those go get it wr's that plucks the ball out of the air. Our WR coach has a huge task on his hands, pun intended ;)

I don't think people here realize how much of a boom or bust pick this kid is. He has all of the physical talent in the world. However, if he doesn't fix his 2 fatal flaws, we could be in for a rocky ride. Thankfully, watching torrey smith these last 4 or so years will help us ease through perriman's growing pains. Also, i'm scared when teams pick dudes due to their 40 times when they don't play that fast on tape. Perriman didn't look like a sub 4:3 player when i watched him.

Absolute worst case scenario - darrius heyward bey (look at their physical and athletic profiles coming out of college. They are almost identical.)

Absolute best case scenario  (i'm being very optimistic here so don't laugh!) - A less refined Terrell Owens (i know, ha ha ha! remember, though! Although owens became a really good route runner & technician, he had a problem w/ drops his entire career! please don't judge me!  :eyes:)

Most likely scenario - vertical, physical deep threat w/ iffy hands who will fight for the ball & stretch the defense (pre-injury Kenny Britt w/o the legal troubles)

All in all, i like this gamble. Why? The ravens have like 8 or 9 picks left. If there is a position of need in the 2nd/3rd round and the ravens really want said player (whether it be darby or even randy gregory), the ravens can easily trade up and get him. This 1st rd pick is the ravens betting on this kid's physical talent, work ethic and football lineage along with our coaches to build a special player. I compare it to nba teams picking the superior athlete w/ upside over the polished nba ready guy. If the athletic dude reaches his potential, you'll have a multi-year star on your hands. If he doesn't reach his potential, he'll probably end up being a flat out bust. Let's hope the former happens!

I along with others on this board have said all along that the ravens need a star offensive skill player to help take pressure off of flacco and the others. Sometimes you need to take gambles to attain said player. Lets hope this gamble pays off.

Go Ravens! Get darby on day 2!

For all of you fans who are complaining about them not taking a CB with the first pick, let me refresh your mind about who is left. PJ Williams, Ronald Darby, Ifo E Olomou, Alex Carter, Josh Shaw, Quinten Rollins, Jalen Collins, Eric Rowe, Charles Gaines and more. CB is one of the deepest positions in this draft and since when has Ozzie not handled business in the draft. We just got a big bodied, speedy WR.

Awww, don't worry about Perriman, he has great raw talent and physical abilities and THAT's what the coaches see. Our guys will coach him up and get him where he needs to be. Can't wait to see him out there catching passes from Joe!

Do you think it's going to be a CB today?

Honestly none of the players in the draft are polished. I cannot believe you bash Breshad Perriman and then praise Dupree. Dupree is the ultimate raw talent of this draft. People talk about how he only uses his athelticism and doesn't use football moves and doesn't fight till the whistle. You could have honestly said almost anyone else in the first round that is more polished than Dupree. The first round is to find guys with athleticism and size that you cannot coach. You can coach catching, ball tracking, and all of that. If the Ravens were to trade up they would have got Shane Ray and that is who they were planning on drafting until Denver traded up. I honestly am excited to see how this guy does. I hate the comparison to Torrey Smith though.

Ravens had Perriman go visit them and they would not have drafted him if in his work out he did not perform well.... He had a bad quarterback last season. Bortles was good when he was there but still if you look at a lot of his highlights it is of him diving everywhere for balls placed way far away. I think everyone should let him get a chance on the field before giving a judgement. Preseason is coming up. I want Maxx Williams (stud and can block) or Eric Rowe (solid defensive back that is very versatile). Round two and three today.

Tbh I'm surprised at this pick. I saw Landon Collins on the board and was ready to bet the farm that he was coming to Baltimore. I was really hoping Shane Ray would fall to us, but Kubiak knew we would bite on him and hopped us. I feel like this is more of a pick for need rather than best player available.

I agree Kubiak knew what we wanted... I was surprised at this pick as well. But if you look at everyone else left on the board I honestly saw no one I wanted the Ravens to draft initially. I was acutally hoping the Ravens would find a trade partner to trade back. I think this pick is a boom or bust. I think they picked a raw receiver for his size and speed because of the upside and hoping they can coach him because if Perriman was as polished as White, Parker, or Cooper I could have seen him going top 10. He has good film and I think the Ravens took a gamble. I wasn't happy at first but I watched more film and I like what I see. First round players are always raw with the higher chance of upside. Give this guy a chance. He has the tools if he puts in the work he can definitely be a #1 receiver.

Love the pick....those intangibles are just off the charts 4.25 speed at that size.... cant believe he was still on the board! Remember that Torrey came here with a reputation for drops and we corrected that.... I love this pick and have every confidence that his production will greatly outweigh his drops! I did think that we may go for Randy Gregory however!

Perriman is a good pick at #26 and gives Joe Flacco the deep threat. Yes he has to work on catching and securing the ball. But his Dad was a NFler and he seems very coachable. Today is the day the Ravens need to take action. There are many good players from picks 33 to 100. I'd like to see the Ravens get at least 2 players in each round, trading the tradable 4th, 5th and 6th rounds to do so (we'll still have 3 comp picks). Yeldon and Cobb at RB, Williams and Woolford at TE, Darby and Rowe at CB, Harold and Moulden at OLB. Henry Anderson DE and Tyler Lockett KR/WR, A J Cann OL. Would welcome any of these players to be Ravens!

Wasn't a fan of Perriman going into the draft.. seemingly a 'one-trick-pony.' Hopefully he pushes guys like Marlon/Kamar to their best.

As far as what our divisional foes did...

1. Honestly love the Steelers pick. I think Dupree is the most underrated rusher of this class, and I think they got great value at that pick.

2. I think Cleveland went 1 for 2. The Shelton pick will make them a ton better against the run, but I don't understand the Erving pick. Good player, pretty versatile, but they already have a pretty solid OL and he can't play RT, which is where they need help. Think they could have gotten a pretty good WR at that spot.

3. I have no idea what Cincinnati is trying to accomplish. I suppose they know that Cedric basically won't play this season, which doesn't make sense to me for a team that should be looking to win now while Dalton and Green are still playing for relatively cheap deals. They had plenty of pass rushers available there that they could have taken, amongst other positions. One of the more baffling picks for me of the night.

ROUND 2: Darby, PJ Williams,Randy Gregory, Ty Locket, TJ Cummings, DFunchess, Landon Collins, Q Rollins, JCollins,Jalen Strong, Eric Rowe,Eli Harold and Maxx Williams- That is 13 possible picks / doubt they will all be gone by 26!

I agree. The proof will be in the pudding 2-3 years from now. Hopefully he will stay in Baltimore for years to come, and not not be a money chaser Torrey. But I really thought the Ravens would have Landon Collins rated higher than Perriman. Was this a need pick? Or does Perriman actually have a higher ceiling than Collins?

The Ravens addressed a need and became more dangerous just in pick 1. The Sqeelers... while I think that Dupree is a solid player / I dont know if I get this pick for a couple of reasons. They lost Troy and Ike and McCain in their DBackfield, Mitchell was horrible and Shamarko Thomas is unproven...They need DBs and OL plus DL help. I guess the sqeelers are conceeding that Jarvis Jones is a bust? I like the browns pick. Danny Shelton makes a good young defense tougher and nastier... Not sure about the Cam Erving pick... they have a solid OL but I guess that makes them deeper (maybe they are actually thinking ahead for once)....so I guess I like what the Browns have done... They have a lot of young talent on there team. I agree with MCJacket on this one????? I dont know what the Bengals were thinking but I said the same thing when the took a RB last year (bc they had Giovanni Benard)... i guess that worked out for them! I like our pick for our need the best but our division got tougher in round 1

I would've preferred drafting defense in the first round, but like Ozzie said, they were all gone by the time we picked. I suspect they wanted Ray to drop to them till Elway did another number on us. In any case, I don't think the Ravens had a first round grade on Byron Jones or they would have picked him. So, Perriman is the WR we all wanted, except we could still get a speed guy in the second, be it Coates or Devin Smith, but I am happy we got the fastest receiver in the draft.

Coupled with Flacco's big arm, we are going to have a lot of big plays from Perriman as long as there are no 'concentration' drops! Now let us go get Quinten Rollins, Preston Smith, Walford and T.J. Yeldon and we'll be awesome.

6-2 4.24 40, will stretch the field, and that opens the mid range routes which is the bread and butter for this offense....CB's can't load the box to stop the mid-range routes, or they will get burned with the deep ball....He apparently has the ability to run all the routes, and not 1 trick pony....Can be worked into the line-up slowly with the depth we have...The size and speed is a rare combo, will cause fits for smaller CB's....
