Welcome to Baltimore, Breshad Perriman

I know it's early of course, but was there anyone surprising that really stood out to you?  Someone around here last year said Kamar Aiken was the big surprise and he ended up making it, so curious to see if there's a guy I can follow this year in that regard.

That was me (pats self on back).

Keep an eye on #11, Kamar Aiken. He was getting open and catching everything anywhere near him. Ozzie might try to stash him somewhere for next year.

I hope so also. Hopefully Trestman wont make everyone situational players like our OC's in the past. I want to see Perriman running a full route tree during games. Not just go routes and run as fast as he can.

Its hard to really get a gauge on what's really going on this time of year because you really don't see anything until the 3rd preseason game. So we just have to take the word of reporters and coaches. But listening to Trestman, Engram and Perriman at various times this offense season, it appears to me that Trestman wants guys that are versatile and can work out of different positions. Perriman made a comment about how he was being used from the slot a lot, which is scary to think of his speed ever being matched up with a LB or Safety caught out of position. Engram highlighted Marlon Brown as a guy who is really good at working from all 3 WR positions and I've heard that Smitty might be working from the slot a good bit this year. So i definitely think Trestman will ask guys to be more then just specialty players.

However with that said i can definitely see Camp used as that slot guy to dominate the middle of the field. Won't see too much of him outside the numbers imo and if Waller proves worthy he could be a red zone specialty guy this season. From what i saw with the Bears Trestman loves to throw the fade in the endzone.

Torrey is not a hated man. Well to some maybr but not to most. People are just pointing out the facts. He wasnt a pure hands catcher. Yes he had some hands catches but most of his catches were sloppy. I will give him credit though. He did get better with his mechanics every year. He was extremely passive. He gave up consistently on his routes-especially towards the middle of field. I think Perriman is significantly better coming out of college the Torrey was and has a higher ceiling. I dont see much similarities between the two really. Someone pointed out the hes similar to DT. I agree with that.

Torrey is incredibly durable also. He had some injuries in his rookie year...still played through it w/o setbacks

I'm going to ask.... could you guys see SSS as our slot guy? Sure hands, short routes, good for a guy his age. Then, by my thinking, we have Perriman, Brown/Aiken, SSS, TE formations filling all areas of the field.

Yes if Aiken can go deep. If not than no because SSS can still stretch the field.

I thought Perriman was going deep, Brown/Aiken intermediate, SSS slot. But also, there nothing that says SSS in the slot can't go deep now and then is there? We don't run a deep route every play.

I think you are 100% right. Smitty will work the slot a good bit. Both Brown and Aiken will be able to get deep because it won't just be a speed thing. It'll be play design and those guys just being able to compete for the ball. Marshall, Jeffery nor Bennett have great speed but they make big plays down field because of size and the ability to make contested catches. Trestman will certainly give guys other then Perriman the opportunity to make plays down field.

I think all our returing receivers are pretty versatile - a good thing for any offense.  Camp, Perriman and Waller are perhaps the ones that have the least versatility because of their they're inexperience - Camp as a slot receiver and the other two used primarily as deep threats in college.

Something I find interesting regarding the drop issue for Perriman in college is that it was never a big issue when Bortles was his QB. BP made the best plays of his college career with Bortles despite being a better player the following year with Holman at QB. A lot of the drops he was credited with while playing with Holman were some terrible throws, Gruden was noted as saying he had 14 drops on film but the truth his only 8 of them were deemed catchable and even some of those 8 drops were iffy because the ball placement was poor despite technically being "catchable".

I think Holman's shoddy accuracy hurt Perriman's draft stock far more than people let on, if Bortles stayed another year I think he's a bonafide top 15 pick, BP was clearly a much improved player in 2014 despite the big step down at QB. When you see what kind of inconsistency and accuracy issues he was dealing with at QB it's an absolute testament to his playmaking ability that he finished the year scoring a TD in every one of his final 6 regular season games. Then in the bowl game he went for 9 receptions, 138 yds, and Holman never even looked his way on a play he was wide open in the endzone.

From his combine presser: "As receivers we always knew the ball was going to be on time when Blake was there and it was going to be a great ball. With a new quarterback and a younger quarterback you had to make adjustments, as a receiver your job is to make the quarterback look good and no matter where the ball is thrown you have to try to go get it".

Translation: "Justin Holman was garbage and I still had 1000+ yds and 9 TD's"

Well to be honest there were 5 What the heck? how could he have dropped that passes. Sure holman isn't exactly stellar but a 1st round receiver is supposed to have the ability to make a bad pass into a good one.

Some will feel awfully silly when Perriman lights up the NFL.

And I won't mind at all. At ALL.

If perriman turns out to be a bust it proves Sami was right and Sami can say I told you so. If perriman lights it up we gain a #1 receiver to help our team win and then Sami says I'm glad perriman proved me wrong.

That's what you call a Win-Win for Sami.

Or he'll just say "I was amping him up since we drafted him" like he did with Jernigan.

I'm saying that's why your so quick to call perriman a bust. Bc you lose nothing if your wrong and you think it makes you look good if your right.
