Ravens and Jimmy Smith agree to contract extension.

Vontae Davis was a stud last year. Talib is often injured but has been very good for more than 1 year. Haden has shown he can be a shut down corner. Peterson has better physical gifts than Jimmy. If some of you can say Jimmy can be a top 3 cb based on potential, I don't see why I can't throw out names that I feel have shown more than him at this point in time.

Because you're not showing in any way how they're better by saying that one has SHOWN (something Jimmy did) he can be good, one has better physical gifts, and one is good when he's healthy (like Jimmy). I mean, basically, you're taking three corners and packing them all into one to make Jimmy Smith.

Didn't Davis have a good year last year? I remember him getting off to a great start at least

He quietly had a really solid year

They can't show a Super Bowl ring that came from him holding his own on an island with Crabtree on the final SF down of the game

It's not on potential - Jimmy had very good 2012 playoff, entire 2013 and phenomenal 2014 before the injury. He was a shutdown corner, he hasn't just shown glimpses of his capability.

Injuries happen and it's not like he re-injured the same ACL for the 3rd time - it's always different stuff.

I just can't believe some people saying he was bad in 2013 or didn't show much. In 2013, over the final 12-13 games, I believe he averaged like five targets and 2, 2.5 extensions and about 30 yards allowed. He allowed two touchdowns in that time frame. His yards per coverage snap over that period would also be top five and so would his completions allowed per coverage snap. I mean, the guy only matched up with Josh Gordon, AJ Green, Brandon Marshall, and Antonio Brown and allowed an average of two catches for twenty yards and no touchdowns. For goodness sake, he allowed three catches for 27 yards against Megatron when tasked with handling him in man coverage.

Then, he comes into 2014 and in EIGHT games (not six, Sami), he allows a grand total of 20 catches on 39 targets for 166 yards. Not good at math? That's 2.5 catches on five targets for 20 yards, per game. No touchdowns. If that weren't good enough, he allowed a grand total of 0.54 yards per coverage snap, good for second in the NFL.

If you're questioning this deal... well, I don't know what to say

Davis was pretty solid so he should be unbolded there. Jimmy is better though.

i think you are talking about corey graham..the guy we let go

i think you did not watch the ravens play in 2013.

jimmy was healthy all season and was covering the #1 receivers that season.

just go back and watch that detriot game and them tell me it was graham following calvin johnson in man coverage.

@Ravens_Examiner: The fact that Jimmy Smith has been so impressive the past 2 years without a fraction of legitimate safety help is impressive

Another good point.

Talking about JM overpaid...lol...we are lucky to get that deal with JM.....

PS: He hurt his foot cuz it is just bad luck; it's not like concussion or back spasm or anything.....

ouch

sorry guys..i don't think he's worth that..esp coming off an injury

we overpaid and the league knows it.

I'm going to assume our doctors checked him but somewhat agree. The problem is, what if out performs his contract and we're forced to pay more next season?

I don't have a problem with the deal.

Absolutely ecstatic. If we had him for the playoffs I have zero doubt we make a SB appearance at the very least. Funny how the national media said absolutely nothing about our best defensive player being out prior to that Pats game.

The Pats SB run was such a farce, they play us without Jimmy at home and still needed to run what are now illegal plays and likely deflated the footballs after inspection just like they did to Indy. Then in the SB they are the benefactors of the worst play call in the history of the NFL..

Anyway, great news to have Jimmy aboard long term, most underrated corner in the game.

Oh man, Jimmy AND Will Hill? Will teams be able to throw it to their side at all?

Guess we don't have to wonder about that one anymore, congratulations Jimmy. He sounded very introspective: knew not to play hardball with the money, appreciated the organization's support, knew his worth might be somewhat muted due to the injuries.

He's sacrificed for us. Even being injured, he gave up basically all of his offseason to come to the facility every day and rehab.

Jimmy is one of the best CBs in the league. I love this deal, he would have gotten more on the open market.

Is he an injury risk? Maybe. Most players have some sort of injury history, and I don't think he is injury prone, just unlucky.

I really like Jimmy Smith, and he's played really well since 2012, while healthy. But, that last part does scare me a little. I felt good and bad at the same time when I read this news. On one hand, this is a great cornerback that I want to remain on the team for years to come. On the other, it kind of reminded me of recent deals with Webb and Pitta, who had injury issues both before and after they signed the deals. Jimmy has had his injury issues so far in his career. I just hope he can play a full season. Even another injury that causes him to miss a game or two will be a little disappointing this year, just building a track record of a guy that can't play a full season. I'll gladly take Jimmy Smith for 14 games, don't get me wrong. I just hope this money we just committed to him results in more playtime than he's had this far in his career.

Considering Byron Maxwell got more money, I don't think you can call this overpaying. Jimmy is actually a top 10 CB when on the field, Byron wasn't even in the top 32 rated by PFF.

exactly he would of commanded a lot more after this season. Its a good deal for a cornerstone of the team.

The good news if everyone stays healthy we have quite good secondary in Jimmy, Webb, Lewis, Hill, and Melvin. Plus, we most likely draft a CB high.

contract makes him the 5th highest when looking at avg per year.

total money he is 9th highest

guaranteed he is paid 10th highest.

im not so sure why people think its a bad deal.

richard sherman got a 4 year 56 mil deal with 40 mill guaranteed .

byron maxwell just got a 6 year 63 mil deal with 25.5 mill guaranteed....

Meanwhile........

Jimmy Smith - 4 year $48M $21M Guaranteed

Just another reason why Ozzie is the BEST GM in the NFL. Seattle and Philly overpaid to keep their guys while Ozzie got away with giving Jimmy less money, specifically less guaranteed money on a more team friendly deal.

GO OZZIE!

To be fair, Sherman deserves to be paid more. Maxwell, definitely no.
