Vote for Ed Reed in this Dan Patrick Poll

End reed is a true safety. Played both as/fs at pro bowl level.

Polamalu was another linebacker!

Yes...this has a lot to do with his retirement..

as a db/saftey last 20 years. for me its simple...

Rod Woodson

Charles Woodson

Ed Reed

Ronde Barber.

Ed Reed been the best ball hawk and Rod being the best overall player. We were so lucky to have him for those 3 years. Best player I have ever watched. I have woodson (talent wise) as the best overall talent to put on a ravens jersey. You put him anywhere in the DB positions and he's the best in the league. No weakness whatsoever.

If you think Woodson was anywhere close to being as good as Ed Reed, you are as wrong as this poll comparing Polamalu to Reed! Sorry, but Ed Reed was hands down the best free safety in the history of the league. Just check the stats and listen to Belichick.

Both are Hall of Fame players, but Reed was definitely he better player.

We are biased and they played completely different positions.  Both had great ball skills, but Ed Reed was far and away the best of atleast the last  decade.  As I mentioned earlier, believe he was like having two men on the field.

You know a player that was like Ed Reed.  Actually a combination of Ed Reed and Ronnie Lott.

This player could line up in the Slot and end up in FS.  Could play sideline to sideline and although he was a FS he was built like a linebacker.  He played with Ed Reed at the U.  Yes, Sean Taylor was just coming into his own before he was murdered.  I'm not saying ST was better than ER, far from it.  It wouldn't be fair to mention them in the same breath as ST only had 3 1/2 years, but he was on his way of being this type of player.

They don't build players like Ed Reed anymore.  He was so intelligent and so versatile.  Had amazing balls skills and great range.  Always able to deceive QB's and then he'd jump the route and boom another defensive TD or atleast interception.

Great Great Great player!

I don't see the argument of reed over rod woodson. I'm not a bias type..and I would pick prime rod woodson over prime reed any day of the week. Ed Reed is light years ahead of troy..but rod was just a better overall player

Troy was honestly a 5th LB with coverage skills out there for the Steelers. Reed was the best safety since Lott, and they probably match up 1a and 1b all time. Two different players, but I think Ed was better.

Rod Woodson, Ronnie Lott and Deion Sanders all said that Ed Reed was better than they ever were.

Was the best in the nfl at either safety slot. That includes Troy. There is not even a clear cut best safety in the NFL right NOW. Ed changed the entire game For the safety position.

No poll necessary.

Might? No, he would be in this conversation.

I've seen lists that put him in the top 10 of all time as far as safeties go. He was an absolute animal

I definitely consider Dion the best defensive back of all time and I would put Rod Woodson as the better defensive back when compared to Ed, but when you're talking safeties, no one compares to Ed.

I'm not saying Rod Woodson isn't great but he was a CB for all but a few years. That's my whole thing if he was exclusively a safety then I would be fine with the comparison

For me it becomes more than just play. Sort of like the conversation we had awhile back about all time QBs. Unitas comes out on top IMO because he basically wrote the book on the modern QB and changed the position.

Hairball & Reed did the same with the Safety position. Reed gets the edge because I have those purple shades but also because he won DPOY at both FS & SS and what Hariball could do, Reed could do as well. That did not hold true of Hairball and Reed's ball hawking skills though. So it didn't apply both ways.

My reasoning for why Reed is the best of all time. Thank you for your time lol

REED!!!.....is Reed. Greatness, but there are and will be other ' Greatness' safeties to go to the Hall of Fame. Stop the comparisons because simply there are no comparisons.

Different times, different eras and different ways/criteria to achieve 'Greatness' even in the same position. Troy is Greatness in his own right (So is Woodson, Deion and the rest.). Personally, I loved the Tatums, Atwaters and Dr. Deaths when the game was very different, they all were 'Great' and their own rights - no better/no worse.

The question should be is Dan Patrick's reporting 'Great' as it relates to this topic. I think not. He's done respectable reporting and has the potential to do respectable reporting in the future, but this isn't 'Great' reporting. Just a shameless attempt in a low news cycle to get a few clicks/hits. There's no comparison to journalism.

I'd say Earl Thomas, at the moment, is the clear cut top safety

Thank you for mentioning Sean Taylor. He also played both safety positions. I believe he would've become one of the best players of all time. Just watching him play, the game just looked so easy for him. I still remember him coming from his safety spot and tackling McNabb by his earhole on 3rd down, half a yard short of the first down marker

First of all let's get one thing clear. Rod Woodson started off as a cornerback and was that for the majority of his career. His safety days were only later. However, anybody that follows the history of the NFL would agree that Ronnie Lott was one of the great safeties in history. Even Ronnie Lott believes Ed Reed was the greatest safety ever. I would take Ronnie Lott's words over Sami84's with all due respect! Here is the link to that article for your information:

Gregg Williams said he was the best player on the field from the first day he stepped on it.  It was so easy for him and it came extremely natural.  They would line him up in the slot and then drop him back into coverage.  The man was a man amongst boys.

What i find immensely impressive about rod is that well into his mid 30's is when he made his transition to FS and was an insane ballhawk and could cover zone and man with ease. Even after a terrible injury in 95..

ed at the same age has been done since.

Charles Woodson is good but on his best day he couldn't instill the fear that Reed put into every QB he faced.

This is the direct link for the poll:

https://polldaddy.com/poll/8792080/

Polamalu is ahead 55% to 45%.

Of course, Reed was far and away superior to Polamalu.

In terms of career value, Ed is 3rd all time behind Lott and Krause because they had longer careers,

In terms of peak value, Ed is 2nd only behind Lott, and it's close, but Lott was the better tackler/hitter and nearly as good at coverage.

If Ed hadn't suffered that shoulder/neck injury which hampered him for years, beginning in his early 30's--he just played through it until it got worse and started to really impact his tackling--then Ed had a great shot at surpassing Lott and becoming the greatest of all time.

Even with the injury, Ed is the best centerfield, single high, ball hawk, coverage safety of all time.

Ed Reed was literally like having two players in one. During his time the Ravens literally had a 12th person on the field.

Ha, literally.
