Vote for Ed Reed in this Dan Patrick Poll

I'm going to guess a lot of that has to do with Polumalu just retiring, as opposed to Ed who just keeps on trying, and failing...

Ridiculous. They shouldn't be competing with each other in the first place. Two very different types of players and generally different safety positions. If you want to go with the old school position set up where you have a strong safety and free safety, I think it is safe to say that Troy was the best SS and Ed was the best FS in the past 20 years.

I'd agree. I will, however, say that Ed was the better of the two. I'm removing my bias here, but he was clearly the best ball hawk ever and he was so smart and defined what would now be the modern age FS position. Troy can't say the same. Furthermore, Ed showed he can play both responsibilities but Troy never really played FS anywhere close to Ed.

Ed Reed was literally like having two players in one. During his time the Ravens literally had a 12th person on the field.

Ed Reed is getting beaten in this HOF poll by Troy Polamalu.  Must be a lot of steelers fans voting.

http://www.danpatrick.com/

The question itself is ridiculous in my mind. Ed Reed was far superior to Polamalu in every aspect of football period. Anybody that knows football well understands it too. It is a shame Dan Patrick even put up this stupid popularity contest poll on the eve of Polamalu's retirement. Very smart and page clicky of you Dan Patrick you scoundrel!

Just ask Belichick who he thinks is the best Safety in NFL history.

ED REED!!! When he gets in the HOF,they should have a statue of him

lateraling the ball after a pick.LOL.

I don't like it but Troy retired while Ed can't find a job. Lingering around hurts his image.

I agree Ed made a bad choice by not going out while on top.  He should retire with Ray and his legacy is perfectly written....

Ed will definitely make to Canton but his first ballot to the HOF is shaking right now when he is clearly much better safety than Troy.....

I disagree with first ballot shaking. Ogden went out after a toe injury and barely playing, but he's one of the greatest players ever. Ed Reed is definitely in the top 100 players ever and that's first ballot worthy, just a matter of when. I think most people realize he's retired and don't think much of it, it's just not official

It would be very hard to make that case since Woodson only played safety for three years and hasn't made nearly the impact Reed did. However, if you wanted to say he's the better DB, I can't argue, although between he and Ronde Barber, that could potentially be a good debate

I don't think this comparison should be made, to me they are the best of the best in their respective positions.

It was great to watch Polomalu's ability to just disrupt plays in the backfield the same way it was great to watch Reed terrorize QB's in the open field.

The debate was settled years ago, NFL Network put him at 88 on their top 100 players of all time list and Polomalu wasn't even on it. And it isn't like Polomalu made up huge chunks of ground since that list came out as they have both been on the decline.

this.

anyone with half a brain knows that ed reed is better. his antics and failure to tackle in his later years tarnish his legacy a tad bit for now but in a decade the missed tackles will be forgotten

All you need to know is that Reed was an All Pro at both SS and FS.  While Polamalu down field was a liability past the 20 yard mark.

One of the dannettes thought of the poll.  Gotta say Dan Patrick totally picked Ed without question.  He said that Ed Reed is more of a pure safety and noted that he made the big plays.  Teams had to watch him and plan for him (he said they had to plan for Ray Lewis too).  He also noted Ed's stats, in particular the interceptions.

I wouldn't put him ahead of Reed, but seems to be one of the most over looked defenders of our generation.

as a db/saftey last 20 years. for me its simple...

Rod Woodson

Charles Woodson

Ed Reed

Ronde Barber.

Ed Reed been the best ball hawk and Rod being the best overall player. We were so lucky to have him for those 3 years. Best player I have ever watched. I have woodson (talent wise) as the best overall talent to put on a ravens jersey. You put him anywhere in the DB positions and he's the best in the league. No weakness whatsoever.

Troy's retiring, so people are obviously putting their votes into him.

I'm not trying to be biased, but Ed gets my vote. He did it all.

He could pretty much do a lot Troy could do, even though Troy did have a great feel for the ball and return as well.

Both are great players, but Ed gets the vote.

Seriously..

-1 for saying rod woodson > ed reed?

sorry but i don't think anyone can make an argument for reed over rod woodson. Woodson was simply a better player.

Ed Reed was the best safety of all time and has been for a long time. No poll is going to tell me otherwise. If you know football you wouldn't say otherwise

They were totally different players for the majority of their careers

Not better than Rod Woodson. I know woodson played his latter years in safety rather than corner but do you really think ed reed is better than rod woodson?..

I have Woodson as a top 10 player of all time

rod woodson and charles woodson where corners before switching to safety in the twilight of their career.

you can argue they where better corners but neither was a better safety then ed reed at any point of their career.

heck i dont know any other player who won defensive back of the year in the NFL as  SS and then later as a FS.
