Free Agency Targets

I agree, a lot of people give Moore flack for what happened in the divisional, I bet if the same play happened again, Moore would make the right one, people learn from stuff like that. I'd love to have Moore and pair him with Hill, secondary would vastly improve.

Moore is good at getting INTs as well.

2 years running, we've tried to cover the FS position by looking for a bargain vet. Year 1 was a total bomb (Huff). Year 2 was barely passable (Stewart). I don't know that we can expect Brooks to be a starter next year, nor do I expect us to draft a starer ready safety ... so it would seem that we'll be shooting for that diamond in the rough for the 3rd straight year.

Certainly Moore wouldn't fall into that category .. he's much more of a known commodity. I wouldn't doubt that he wants out of Denver. I mean, who would want to be subjected to the venom from the fan base that he's had to endure. But I really don't have a sense of what kind of money he'll command and I don't know if we'll pony up for him. I just don't think people appreciate how tight a cap situation we have.

The contract obviously wouldn't be a Stewartt style one, but I would expect it to be rather affordable.

Probably the total opposite of what you stated- Resign Ngata to LT deal, wave goodbye to McPhee, Draft 3 DB's ...Maxwell will want Maximum $$$

That would be the worst sitution. Think of Jimmy early in his career and Elam now. DBs take time to develop. if we are drafting any, I'd only expect one in the first 4 rounds.

Cutting Ngata would leave too much dead cap. It's not really feasible. McPhee is gonna to be the next art jones, Kruger, etc. Really talented, but we simply can't afford his price range.

No, the worst situation was the year 2014 for the secondary. They had great success in the draft with DB's and they won't rely on castoffs from around the league nor over pay for them.

No, a situational player isn't priority. Someone will over pay him and it wont be the Ravens

trade ngata then. there will be someone out there who could use him. 3rd round pick and free up the cap.

hes a very good run stuffer..he still has his reputation and someone will bite.

i like jernigan and brandon williams going forward

Ngata doesn't leave much dead money. Not anymore than he already has. There's no acceleration on the cap. He could certainly be cut.

Ngata is currently a 16M cap hit.  Cutting or trading him leaves Baltimore on the hook for 7.5M which is much better.  Even a contract extension likely doesn't drop him below that 7.5M mark unless he takes a real cheap deal for about 4 additional years.

Everyone else on the d-line should be under contract (I expect Canty to be cut also) and they looked good the last 4 games without the big guy.  Didn't miss a beat.  That 8.5M saved can go towards a few free agents

Randall Cobb. Let Torrey walk, I want a  more complete receiver. Would love DT but want to be somewhat realistic and Randall Cobb would be a number 1 for us instead of a number 2 in GB.

In those four games with out  Ngata our defense nearly gave 100 yards  twice .Our run defense wasn't bad or anything but I kinda hope we able to keep Ngata around . He's still a solid run defender , he still can get after the passer, and he's very versatile

The only dead money a team really concerns itself with is future dead money. That's what hurts (for example, Ray Rice's 9.5M+ in dead money for 2015). Dead money in the current year is just taken off of the players cap hit and what is left is used to determine the savings on your current year's cap. For Ngata, cutting him saves 8.5M, period ... dead money is already built into that figure.

I like Randall Cobb no doubt he benefited alot with having Jordy Nelson  on the field  with himbut I have no idea if he's a number one receiver. The Packers have a great quarterback in Rodgers and they really have great offensive system as well  but Cobb always strike me as a slot receiver.

If we cut Ngata, we save 8.5M off the cap If we extend him, we save something - but not as much as a cut. I'll just give the swag at 5M ... but also we're committing a significant amount of future money to him as well.

So, given that we don't save as much via extension AND are committing future dollars on Ngata's contract, it could be viewed that the only chance we have to keep McPhee is to cut and not extend Ngata.

If that is the case, what do you think is the best course of action? McPhee was great last year, but will that last? Ngata is a world class player, but how much is left in the tank? Personally, I'm torn.

Hmmmm that's alot to consider but lets keep this in mind what if Mcphee wants to be a full  time starter?  He's not going to get that opportunity  as a Raven with Suggs and Dumervil  still being here. He's not 3-4 defensive end so it's not like he can be a starter their full time . There will definitely be some teams out there that will be in need  of a pass rusher  like Mcphee but also they will be able to guarantee a every down role.

Ngata on the other hand will still be a starter if he considers a contract extension and we might already have our Mcphee replacement in Jernigan, KLM,Urban, Tyson and I been hearing this year draft has some talented pass rushers as well.

Correct. Even if we gave Ngata an extension, the absolute minimum he could cost for the season would be around $8.5M ($7.5M carried over from prior bonus amount, and at least a $1M salary). Given that we would almost certainly give him some kind of signing bonus, possibly in the $10M range, you'd probably be looking at adding at least $2-3M more to that.

I think, conservatively, if we extend Ngata, he's going to count somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-12M against the cap this season, and that could easily be more. So in reality, an extension would probably save us, in a best case scenario, about $5-6M against the cap this season.

However, I think any deal we give him would probably have less than half guaranteed money, and there would probably be no guaranteed money left after the first two years (ala Suggs). So, realistically, while he might carry a $10-12M cap number this season, he might easily carry half of that the next season, and he certainly wouldn't have that high of numbers in the future.

As much as I'd hate this, I can see scenario where we say good bye to both.

I agree with this... I don't think its necessarily a one or the other scenario. I see plenty of scenarios where we lose both.

It wouldn't be an instant fix. Our secondary would be as bad or worse next year if we realized solely on rookies to fix the holes.

One of them certainly being our secondary and the need to beef it up with FA vet(s) rather than rookies. For that we'll need money we can only get by cutting Ngata unfortunately. We're just an injury to #22 away from another disastrous season at the back unless we sign proper CB. We might want to spend some on proper FS too, until Brooks is ready.

I don't see this happening though.

Realistically speaking, its likely that 2015 is Webb's last season with us unless he agrees to take a massive pay cut (and he may not even play in 2015 to begin with). That, coupled with the fact that our best corner is in a contract year and coming off a bad injury, means that you probably can't just count on signing one FA corner to help us in the long run... you're more than likely going to have to draft a corner with the hopes that he's a quality performer by year 2 or 3 (ala Jimmy Smith). I don't think we are likely to have the cap space to spend on a major FA corner regardless of what we do, so any FA corner we sign would be of the #3 corner variety most likely (ala Graham).

As for safety, I'm just not convinced they feel the position requires major attention. I think they know they're bringing back Hill as a starter, and they're just going to try to have an open competition in camp for the other spot. Ideally, they'd put guys like Elam, Brooks and possibly even somebody like Miles in a camp battle and see who comes out on top. I suppose they could add a cheap veteran FA or a draft pick of some sort, but I'm not expecting much there.

I wouldn;t expect to see a top CB in te backfield unless we drafted him.  Free Agent top cornerbacks are luxuries because you always spend twice as much for the best ones and you're STILL one injury away from a disaterous seson then,  Pass rush comes cheaper and they're easier to develop from scratch - meaning cheap rookie labor or salvaged vets.  Never quite seems to work out that way for DBs.  Right now, I think our DBs will be much better next year even among the group they have.

Ngata can still play at a high level and get pressure.  Granted Brandon Williams, Jernigan and Tyson have shown they can hold down the fort, but then you have Canty talking retirement.  Now pass rush is something they need to fortify - AGAIN.  Without Ngata that leaves an even bigger hole there.  It's is time to ask him to drop his salary number or extend it out.  He's showing that he needs Aderall to stay focused and is always slowed by a nagging injury.  I'd like to see him retire a Raven, but if he can;t live up to the salary number or alter the deal then I trust in what Ozzie decides.

I think we lose both Ngata and McPhee. I think we use their money on offense and the secondary with some free agent veterans for rotation. Probably re-sign Torrey, extend Tucker, tender Hill, and sign a few veteran free agents and guys like Justin, Daniels, etc.

I think we sign a good veteran corner and draft one during first 2 draft days. 2014 was a freak year from the injury perspective but next one will have us relying on too many high risk guys (some of those injuries aren't exactly walk in the park to come back from). Realistically speaking, we were Jimmy Smith away from another SB, I don't think Ozzie will let that happen again. Assuming Daniels and Forsett will be back for relatively cheap, we don't really need much elsewhere on the team. We're going to either keep Torrey or sign similarly priced WR out in FA. However I look at this, I can't find another way of making team immediately better other than using Ngata savings.

I agree though that safety is not likely to be high priority.
