Kick/Punt Returner?

27 posts in this topic

Just a quick question to see where everybody stands; if you could choose anybody on the current roster, bringing in somebody via the draft, trade or a F.A , who would you like to see returning kicks for the ravens this year? I'm not completely sold on Camp or Asa, so I'm just curious to see how some of y'all feel about the position after the departure of Jacoby.

Camp can handle PRs, Asa KRs as players on the current roster, but I'm really starting to like Jamison Crowder from Duke (shutter) as a return guy in the middle rounds. He is electric with the ball in his hands and displays great vision. Diggs as well, but I think we will have a better idea after the draft.

Right now I'm leaning toward diggs, but not sure about letting a rookie have the starting job unless he blows people away. I'd rather see Asa returning kicks over camp, but it is too early to tell.

In the draft, depends whichever guys we pick obviously but there are some dynamic returners available at WR. Then, of course, FA is influenced by who we draft though there aren't any great options.

My preference is to grab a mid-late round guy at WR who is also a plug-and-play excellent returner. Someone like Stefon Diggs, Ty Montgomery, Tyler Lockett, Jamison Crowder, etc. A guy like Kaelin Clay has return potential, judging by his stats but I haven't heard much about him.

Since I don't know a ton about some of these prospects, I'm going off of this list - http://www.rantsports.com/nfl/2015/02/06/2015-nfl-draft-pre-combine-ranking-the-top-10-kick-and-punt-returner-prospects/

Asa and Camp were my first thoughts but a draft pick could certainly get in the mix. I would prefer to keep Webb off of returns for the obvious injury concerns we need him at CB

Steffon Diggs or Nelson Agholor would be ideal imo or maybe even take a flyer on Jamarcus Nelson the tiny guy (156lbs) from UAB

No Webb.

We still have a thin secondary.

We only put Webb in for fair catches. We put him back there when we were getting backed up and didn't trust Jacoby to actually catch it. I don't think he's actually "returned" a punt in 3 years.

For a returner, I would love Ty Montgomery coming into the fold. I think he could be a much younger version of Jacoby Jones for us. A possible pro bowl KR would could spark an offense with his ability to get open. You add that with a Tyler lockett and a darren waller(if we are getting wr's in the later rounds as mentioned) and you have a group that could compete for time automatically.   STRENGTHS

Built like a full-grown man. Body type resembles that of a running back with well-defined, muscular legs. Foot quickness to create separation on short to intermediate routes. Played outside, from slot, as a tailback and as a wildcat quarterback. Displays good lateral movement and balance with ball in his hands. Works to be a plus run blocker. Has size and determination to be used to crack-block ends. Good, not great run-after-catch potential. Scouts believe he can be a Pro Bowl returner. Scored four times over last two seasons as a returner. Strong personal character and considered an "accountable teammate" by coaching staff.

asa on KR and camp/ webb on punts.

or some rookie/ guy that gets cut in camp.

i don't want webb do anything but play CB. he's to expensive and to injury prone.

This right here. Webb's the guy if you want a reliable set of hands more than you want a big return. If we're down with three minutes to go, I'd rather trust Joe in a potentially worse field position than risk fumbling it away after picking up 15 yards.

I still cringe whenever he's out there, but that's what he's good for. Making the catch and doing nothing else, but with nothing else going wrong.

I like Camp too much as a WR to have him returning kicks.

This is where I am. I hope we pick up a capable burner in the draft that has a little more size.

For what it's worth, I don't think injuries occur anymore frequently on punt or kick returns for the returner than in their regular full time position

he only gets send out to fair catch lol.

he offers the least risk in certain situations and its why they use him.

Me too that's how I felt when they would put Reed back there too. I lean towards Camp for now but depends on who we draft as well

It's kind of funny that Webb, a CB is more reliable to make the catch than Jacoby, a WR!!! Lol

Yeah whenever I saw them put Webb out there I always wondered how jacoby felt about it. Kind of was like a slap in the face to him, but hey when you muff several punts and continuously make bonehead decisions coming out of the endzone 8 yards deep you can't be trusted in those tight situations. Ofcourse there was always that chance of him busting one open and taking it to the house but after a while I think most ppl just lost faith in the guy, esp in those crucial moments.

Also smart enough to take the fair catch instead of trying to return it.

I really think the blocking wasn't what Jacoby had in previous years. Many of his best reliable blockers were let go.

If the team wants the level of returns as seen in the previous few years they will need to draft. I don't see a top level return specialist presently on the roster.

I've edited this because my post seems to suggest drafting for this (which I don't see happening), but I mean the player drafted for other reasons (wr, cb etc.) might also be an exceptional return specialist and have that on his resume.

Ty Lockett/ Montgomery / Diggs / Agholor / or Asa.

Camp is too good as a WR.

I would give Michael Campanero the first shot to handle returns and feel like he could take over both KR/PR. It should be a fun competition to monitor come training camp.

Campanaro hasn't proved anything yet except he could become a good player, showed promise as a returner, can make tough catches, and has some difficulty staying out of the trainer's room. I think he'll be our top guy as a PR, and I'd guess Jackson will take over KR unless we get a guy.
