The Matt Schaub Thread

do you think if matt schaub were to back up aaron rodgers, peyton manning, drew brees or tom brady, they would "lean on him" and "learn from him"? LOL

No, because Schaub never played in their systems.

Schaub said....

“It’s a great fit for me as far as the offense is concerned, as far as the type of player Joe is and how we’ll mesh in the QB room. I feel like we’re going to have one of the best rooms in football. We’re going to grow, we’re going to compete, we’re going to help each other to get better. Ultimately, that will lead to wins on the field for this team.”

^ Compete?  With who?  Lol.....

lol I was thinking the same thing but in reality it is just media kind of talks.  As far as football concerns, Schaub did know Kubiak systems much longer than Joe so he might have some up in his sleeves.

I think it's a good signing for taking couple games off Joe when Joe needs to rest.....

I'm not against the signing.  Actually, I'm indifferent to it but when Schaub said "we're going to compete," surely he's not talking about with Joe Flacco cause there is no competition in that regards.

There is always something to learn.  ALWAYS.

I dont care if you are Joe Flacco, Peyton Manning or who you are.  There is ALWAYS something to learn.

Just because there's not competition for the starting job doesn't mean that Schaub and Joe can't compete.

Not the same sport, but in 1984 Larry Nance beat Julius Erving in the slam dunk contest. They were competing, but no one is saying that Nance is the better play.

I think he's expressing confident in the Ravens and they can have friendly competitions in practice. I did golf for two years in high school and in no way, shape, or form was I better than my coach (who was a pro), but he still liked to compete with us and do little skill challenges. It's really fun to just compete and it pushes you.

I don't think the Ravens are paying Schaub $2M to just hold a clipboard. He absolutely will help be a teacher of the system and help Joe continue to learn the intricacies of the offesne, considering he was a pro-bowl quarterback in that offense.

I do think Schaub is capable of winning games in the short term, but if Joe were to go down for a long time, the Ravens are probably done, even with Schaub. If all they were looking for was a clipboard holder given Joe's durability, they would have only kept Wenning or drafted a quarterback for a massive fraction of the cost.

This is similar to bringing in Forsett (who was viewed as a third/fourth stringer before Rice got cut) and Daniels (who started off as a backup in a run first offense). They helped ease the transition for the players. I'll take Schaub and his pro-bowl years in the offense over nothing because he can help make the transition and keep continuity since the Ravens want to keep running Kubiak's offense and, you know, Kubiak and his staff are gone and someone needs to teach it.

for the first time i agree with you. this is a joke? we lost ngata for a back up qb that isnt very good? bet webb feels like a moron throwing away 2m. holy crap.

I read that he can earn up to 3m based on playing incentives... not a 3m a year contract.

half of this thread has been people posting about how much schaub will "help the system" because he "knows the system" and he will "coach the system". hes getting paid to stand around and hold a clipboard. the only relevance he'll have with this "system" is if (knock on wood) flacco does down. even then, how confident how are you with the guy? he got cut from the raiders in favor of derek carr. LOL. to answer your first question, I have more faith in trestman and morningweig than matt schaub, if you would rather have matt schuab preaching knowledge to Joe then wow, no wonder you dont work for the NFL.

This needs to be addressed 'cuz I'm tired of seeing the Schuab ignorance.

Kubiak coached the most success offense this franchise has ever had.  He's gone.  The Ravens hired Trestman because, like Schaub, he has familiarity with his system.  Trestman's version is a little different and Mornhinweg has no experience in it.  Schaub is the missing link.  He has intimate knowledge of Kubiak's system.  Without Gary, Schaub will fill in the holes.

Make no mistake Schaub can still play and will if necessary.  His incentive laden contract is proof that he is here as a teacher as much as a b/u to Joe.

. I would rather have all 3 of them preaching to joe. The more knowledge the better.

This. They brought Schaub in so he can fill in for Flacco from the QB perspective the exact system Kubiak ran last year. That and you'll have a backup QB who needs zero teaching the system. I don't see how this is a losing scenario, unless you think Ozzie brought him in to win 6 games if Joe goes down. But what's losing there is sanity.

Ironically, I remember a lot of guys here ranking Schaub ahead of Flacco in their QB rankings, lol...I'm not going to kid myself and pretend that we stand much of a chance if Schaub has to play for some reason. Schaub was Andy Dalton before Dalton was Dalton....pretty stats, but a choke artist whose teams' win despite, not because, of them.

Scaub actually was a decent QB in his own right for a little bit. He did lead the league in passing in 2009 and made two Pro Bowls. Granted, that's not much better than Andy Dalton but this was the Texans before Arian Foster and JJ Watt.

The Ravens being a team that competes goes without saying!  They do that year in an year out.  My statement was one of sarcasm Bmore.

Probably; it was more metaphorical than anything, but at any rate, 'was' is the key word in that sentence....today, well, you are pretty much screwed either way

Having Schaub is great. Although Flacco hasn't been hurt, no one can count on that forever. We haven't had a backup as good as Schaub in a while (Tyrod Taylor didn't really get that much playing time, and didn't overly impress when he did). Schaub also brings to the table Pro Bowl calliber experience. This, along with Flacco, obviously playoff and Super Bowl experience, would be great for young players, and young quarterbacks that may come in the future.

QB Matt Schaub has now thrown 9 interceptions over the first 6 days of camp, including 2 today in the first two hours of practice.

This guy is the worst. Preseason gonna be almost unwatchable once the Starters stop playing after the first 3 minutes. We need to find a decent backup fast.

Vick's still on the market... #ravenssignvick

Alas, it was filled with words.
