The Matt Schaub Thread

177 posts in this topic

If you're looking purely at the cost for Schaub, I think it's a good deal.  $2-3M isn't bad for a backup QB of his caliber.  My biggest concern is the amount we spent in relation to the cap space that we have and the other holes on our roster.  I don't mind paying a backup QB that much.  I don't even think it's a bad decision overall, just questionable with our other needs.

I feel the same way. We didn't over pay for Schaub, only in relation to our own cap space. Would've rather prioritized getting Housler finalized or another CB.. I like having a competent backup but I hope we left ourselves enough room to fill out some other needs before the draft.

I read that article about veteran salary bonus and I'm not sure how it applies. It seems to me that it lowers the cap hit only if they are signed for the vet min. Or am i missing something? Anyway, it seems the 3 mil is max value and its likely this is a 1 yr 2 mil deal. That's acceptable for an accomplished vet backup qb. Although my initial impressions are i don't love it with our current cap situation.

But then again, maybe this is a play to take him off the market and flip him to a desparate team for a draft pick! Wishful thinking? Lol

That $1M incentive makes a big difference on my outlook of this

I don't know if it makes me feel too much better.  If we weren't going to use the $2 mil this year, it would certainly help us sign/keep some guys next year.

The thing is, if Joe goes down and Schaub is forced to play, are we any better off than we'd be with Wenning?  I say our chances of actually being a competent football team would be still close to zero.  Is that worth $2 million?  In my eyes, no.  Though maybe, as others are saying, Schaub can provide our QBs with value off the field that will make him worth signing.

If anything, he'll help our CBs figure out how to intercept the ball during spring training :)

great signing. this means if joe gets hurt the season is not necessarily over like it would have been if tyrrod would have taken over.

I agree with you entirely but would you rather spend $2M on Schaub or $3M? That's my change in outlook. I'll trust Ozzie but I would've stayed away from him.

I'm hoping he doesn't see the field but gives Joe and our young WRs some significant helpful tips and provides a veteran presence in the locker room. Bulger helped a younger Joe.

START HIM!!!!!!!!!!

Edit - Kidding.

LOL

I'm taking odds on how many in here saying Schaub is crap will be clamoring for him to start at Flacco's first bad game.

I predict this thread will be active through and to the end of football season.

I want you to be wrong, but you wont be.  ( with my correction )

Fun fact! The very first team Matt Schaub played against as a professional was..... The Baltimore Ravens!

That is a fun fact lol. Is that after AD broke Vicks leg?

I'm with you but from what I've seen Schaub doesn't have a whole lot left in the tank. Maybe a few games if something happens (knock on wood) but, man, that's a lot of money.

1) He doesn;t need a "full tank" to be a back up.

2) That is not a lot of money for a guy that can step straight in and excute if need be, will continue to the teach the offense in place of Kubiak, and since he mat never get used the deal would then essentially be $2M.at most.

I honestly don't get all the questions on Ozzie's judgement.  This is the Ravens, not Raiders.  Let's leave the cap decisions up to the guy that does his 24/7.

Actually I heard some things bout Scaub and IM TOTALLY IN FAVOR OF SIGNING HIM!! I heard Schaub is very smart in the class and film room. And he is a future offensive coordinator and maybe even head coach. He isn't just the backup QB. THIS IS HIS COACHING APPRENTICESHIP!! He will be working with the players like WRs RBs and TEs. He will help introduce Rob Housler to the system and work with him on timing like he once did Owen. He knows the system as well as Kubiak and has always been instrumental with innovating and coordinating plays. Houston first traded for him cuz of how smart he was coordinating plays with the offensive players in practice and in the film room. He was very helpful to Kubiak even with the run game. He never had great arm talent but was successful due to how well he coordinated and executed plays. He was very instrumental designing and coordinating the offense with Kubiak and is said to be overall more innovative than Kubiak. He knows the system and how to detail it as well as Kubiak. Not to mention other teams were aware of his offensive smarts and other teams were interested in signing him cuz of his knowledge and command of the system. He isn't just a backup QB this is beginning of his coaching. He is a backup QB but will be working with players coordinating and detailing plays. He helped Carr a lot and it could hurt Derek's progress. He could end up ravens offensive coordinator eventually. The offense will not miss Kubiak with Schaub around and will make a smoother shift to Trestman. Its the reason he is getting the extra $$. He has agreed to help with the offense. He only will get an extra $mil for actually playing cuz much of his work will be in practice switching up with Joe working with different players. This was a great signing actually. I never heard b4 his immense savvy helping Kubiak and whomever is coordinating and designing the offense

Another brilliant move by Ozzie. $3mil more on a useless player. He has been terrible and benched by everybody who signed this scrub thinking he had some good play. His arm is the weakest. Is this what they meant by proactive in free agency?? I would bet $$ that Wenning outplays him in preseason!! Wasted $$ like this is why the team could not sign anybody in free agency to help this team!! Yeah Ozzie really had something up his sleeve. If they don't bank this draft the Superbowl is very unlikely. I actually thought they would sign a player or 2 that would actually help the team. But Ozzie's at it again. More useless cap $$ If this team struggles Biscotti is going to lose more of his patience. The great Ozzie can't find anything better to do with cap $$. Can't wait to see this loser play in preseason and get beat out by Wenning. Then everybody will see it is another terrible decision!!

I dont understand this signing. After reading Matt Schaub was on the market I thought "oh he might be a good pickup". Once we signed him and saw that it was 1 year for 3mil I thought, "wow what a terrible pickup". Joe Flacco has started every game in his 7 year career. Why go out and spend so much money on a backup all of a sudden? Especially when we are so tight against cap? And we are in dire need of other positions like TE, WR, DB, etc?? Really doesn't make any sense. I'm scratching my head with this one.

Agreed. Not only is he an upper tier backup but he's spent years playing in this system, he's thrown for 4000 yds twice in this system, he's seen nearly every type of coverage imaginable first hand in this system, he's had to make in game adjustments in this system, he's especially valuable to us in particular because of his experience in our system.

Besides Kubiak and his offensive coaching staff you couldn't ask for a better resource than a guy like Schaub who had to know this system better than any other player on that Texans offense. Even if he never sees the field we are getting something in return for having him on our roster, how many teams can say that about a backup QB?

The over reactions/uninformed criticisms posted here are comical. Why not just let the details come out and then make a judgement.

This seems to be a very solid move. We get huge benefit on many levels by adding an experienced backup QB that we haven't had since Bulger was here.

I have to say though, the ex Texans thing is getting a little freakish!

This is more than just for a backup QB signing, no one here knows the system better than Schaub. It's good for the coaches also and may be particularly helpful since the team plays Denver this year.

lol @ people stating "he knows the system". hes a 2nd string qb, not an offensive coordinator or qb coach. flacco will learn everything from trestman, morhinweg and past experience. not schaub lol.

lets see:

flacco 1 year experience in kubiak scheme

trestman 0 years experience in kubiak scheme.

morhinweg  0 years experience in kubiak scheme.

schaub 7 years of experience in kubiak scheme.

hmmm i wonder who knows more about kubiak scheme.

you do know the ravens want to build on that scheme right?

Seems like a lot of money for a guy we hope never plays, but the Kubiak experience IS worth something - leaving it to Oz to decide how much.

I do wonder if Joe's 2016 cap hit was a consideration? Meaning, God forbid, he won't restructure and we lose him, we could more easily resign Shaub as a stop gap or someone as to teach a new QB the system? I dunno, as I type this, it sounds crazier than it did in my head, but who knows.
