The Matt Schaub Thread

177 posts in this topic

since schaub is an 11 year pro according to that rule if the ravens will use it on him he will only count 970K against the cap.

that is if there isent a bonus worth more then 65K in his contract.

so its pretty early for people to make assumptions without knowing the contract details , especially how much is guaranteed.

970K cap hit is nothing for a QB with as much experience as schaub.

Exactly.  My guess is Oz knows exactly what he is doing and that people who jump to conclusions know nothing.

well apperently its a 1 mil base salary , 1 mil bonus and 1 mill incentives deal.

not bad at all.

For a 2 time pro bowler who is familiar with the system and would have a pretty decent OL if the worst happened. I ll take it. Wenning doesn't mean Winning, people. At least Schaub has started in a game....

Welcome to Baltimore, not a bad deal as Schaub fits here pretty well although it is interesting that they decided to invest in such a high profile backup.

That's hardly a guess. Sounds more like a fact.

I feel like we overpaid Schaub, but then what do I know like Ozzie,

This upcoming draft, I assume we're getting multiple players to fill the offensive skill positions (WR, TE, RB) and Schaub is going to groom them.

About as good as it get's for a backup. I think Schaub can push Joe in practice harder than Tyrod did and also be more useful discussing concepts/attacking different coverages because of his extensive experience as a starter in this system in Houston under Kubiak. If Joe were to miss time I don't think you can realistically ask for a better backup to keep things running smooth until he got back.

he can sign for whatever price as long as the guaranteed part is less then 65K and its a 1 year deal and he is a veteran lol

at least thats what i make of it.

that 970K will be his cap number and the minimum schaub will make.

max ofcourse will be the 3 mil but it wont count that much against the cap.

so its a 3 mil 1 year deal with a 970K cap hit and  970K minimum earning.

IF the cap hit is only 970k then whats all this fuss about???

Ozzie knows what's up, he's been slingin' as the leagues best GM for ages. Calm down people! I could understand your worry if we were Browns fans, but we're not.
Wenning is likely incompetent, and I would rather trust Oz and in-house personel than internet GM's "praising" Keith.

Give the man some credit.

Really intrigued by the amount of money in the deal. We've put zero emphasis on backup QB before now. Why were we so comfortable with Tyrod as our backup when he proved incapable of passing, yet we now feel an urge to have a $3 million backup? Is this Trestman's influence, I wonder?

Exactly. Next hole to patch... TE... I'm hoping for Gresham, but wouldn't be at all upset if it was Housler. I still wan't Clive Walford in the 3rd...

Couldn't put it better myself. Focus on what he has to offer people. We just got better.

Not where I would have chose to spend the money, especially with potential holes in the starting lineup at WR, TE, and to a lesser extent, CB.

It's a 970K cap hit. We had to find a QB2. HOW could we have done better? There should still be plenty to find another piece or maybe two before the draft...

@RavensInsider: Matt Schaub got a $1 million base salary, a $1 million signing bonus and $1 million in playtime incentives per a source

Lol it's funny to see people coming back off the ledge...we knew that we needed to find a replacement back up QB, they sat down and told us that they wanted to upgrade the back up QB position...this is not a bad signing...have I made fun of Matt Schaub and how awful he has been lately, yes of course I laugh every time He throws a pick six. But we were going to sign someone, why not sign someone who has had success in the system and knows it well. The best thing he can offer this team is his knowledge, and I'm hoping they saw enough in him that told them he could be a valuable piece for them from a teaching standpoint, as well as having game experience if need be. And no, I am not talking about him helping Joe and coaching up joe, I'm talking about him helping the receivers. Now those guys on the second team have no excuse not to be prepared.

People saying "idiot" and "Stupid"  when referring to Ozzie and this decision.

After all these years, you still have not yet learned?

I'm a little iffy on the cap hit, but I'll gladly take you up on that bet.

Really?? Have you seen pick6 throw lately?? I haven't except his picks on sports center just b4 he gets benched. I hear WRs could have a latte b4 his throw gets there. Likely how he throws so many picks. His velocity was suspect even in his prime but he had Andre Johnson and Owen in their prime with a great run game. He is older now with and his throws most likely lost some heat.

It's more than that.  It's at least $2M if he has a $1M base salary and a $1M signing bonus.

I think you're underestimating the quality of our line, how effective our system is (yes I know Schaub played dreadfully in the same one two seasons ago), but most importantly how average Kevin Wilber has looked at QB.

I doubt he will hit his playing time incentives with Joe's durability.. and if he does hit his playing time incentives then it's money well spent because that means we have a competent backup playing important snaps in Joe's absence.

Chill guys. Signing bonus doesn't count against cap and I doubt he will hit his playing time incentives with Joe's durability.. and if he does hit his playing time incentives then it's money well spent because that means we have a competent backup playing important snaps in Joe's absence.

Signing bonus absolutely does count against the cap.  It's guaranteed money.

Never was a fan of Schaub, but have always been a HUGE fan of Ozzie and Harb. If they did the deal - the deal is good.

In Oz I still trust.

I was thinking it was a multi-year deal so the 1M would be distributed throughout the contract against the cap but since it's a 1 year deal we take the cap hit all at once.

If you're looking purely at the cost for Schaub, I think it's a good deal.  $2-3M isn't bad for a backup QB of his caliber.  My biggest concern is the amount we spent in relation to the cap space that we have and the other holes on our roster.  I don't mind paying a backup QB that much.  I don't even think it's a bad decision overall, just questionable with our other needs.
