ALSKAN RAVEN FAN

Should the Ravens restructure Flacco this year instead of next year?

If the Ravens restructured / extended Flacco this year instead of next year  would  there be any negative ramifications from doing it a year early? It would be nice to have that worked out then be able to extend J.Smith and whoever else we need to before next years off season free agent / pre-draft  rush. I cant remember Flacco's cap hit numbers  but I know its a doozy next year. I would be all for getting the deal done early if there was no negative ramifications.

His cap hit isn't an issue this year

I understand that. but next year it is a big issue. I just wonder if it would be smart to get it done instead of wait.

he salary is only 4 mil so there isn't much to restructure or save lol

next season it will jump to 18 million and then talks should happen.

Doing it this year could be detrimental. The "normal" way of doing it is to convert salary to bonus then prorate that over an extended contract. If we do it now (for little benefit), it would be hard to do another extension next year.

I think Alaska Raven knows his hit isn't a problem until next year, he only is wondering if it would be good to be proactive and look at it now (and what negative ramifications may prevent that).

I don't think they are going to look at this anytime soon, because they have their hands full dealing with things that need to be dealt with now. That is not to say that there won't be a desire to perhaps revisit this before the season starts ... at least to start a dialogue.

However, I just don't know if I can think of a time where a contract was restructured in advance of when it needed to be. I think both sides are going to want to wait until the full season plays out (particularly in the event of a ... God forbid ... significant injury). Again, I could see where there may be the desire for dialogue, but I can't imagine anybody is putting pen to paper until next off season.

You hit it on the head. I understand Joe's cap hit this year is not much when you get down to all the technical stuff. I was just curious if it would be in our best intrest to get it done sooner rather than later.

I think it will get done either over the summer or sometime during the season.  I just get this feeling it will be the kind of thing that happens when nobody's really expecting it to.  Right now our top 2 priorities are filling out the roster in FA and getting to the draft, then it will be setting the roster through OTAs and TC.  I don't really think any of next year's FAs are a major priority for the FO right now when we're still not sure what this year's class will do.

Great point. I was just kinda wondering if it would be good to get a jump on things early.
