Haloti Ngata traded to Lions

278 posts in this topic

Any chance we could bring in Knighton to replace him?

The replacement is Jernigan. We might possibly sign a depth player at DT but we won't be in the market for a new starter in FA when we have a highly talented Timmy Jernigan waiting in the wings. He was destroying the Patriots guards in the playoffs, Jernigan is the real deal folks.. we just need a depth signing which probably won't come until the market settles down.

He did get to Brady once, until they changed to the no drop back snap pass we were powerless to defend.  Didn't brady go 32 for 33 or something like that.

Hey, didn't rmcjacket say we wouldn't be able to get anything for Ngata because people know we're going to cut him? Well, now! Look who's the uniformed fan now.

Well a 4th and 5th in exchange for a 7th plus we gain $8.5M in cap space.

Not too shabby really.

not bad for lions either.  they lost fairly and suh, and ngata costs them only 8.5m.   Fairley is probably going to be paid that same amount p/year and ngata is definately still a top 5 DT.

I think that´s a great trade, but... 4 and 5 Rounds? Haloti is more valuable than that

Not when you have zero leverage because everyone knows we would just cut Ngata and get nothing in return if we couldn't find a trade partner. The 4th and 5th round picks don't really reflect Ngata's true value, it's more a reflection of what the Lions were willing to give up to guarantee they would get him. If Ngata hit the open market he could sign where he pleases. It's a very good deal just for the rights to a player that was on his way to be released.

I'm not happy that we lost him. I would have preferred an extension, but I am happy that we were able to recoup two draft picks for a player that we would have been forced to let for nothing.

I will miss him for sure and the Ravens will miss him too. He's still a very good player. Fortunately, we have depth up front to replace him.

This is definitely a tough decision and it's really sad to see Haloti go. But we have people to replace him now. We got $8.5 million, which is a total of $11 million in cap space. We can get some decent players with that money. Now we have many more draft picks which allow us to trade up. Not even in the first round, but maybe an Arthur Brown type situation may arise. Obviously he hasn't panned out but you get my point.

It's similar to the Boldin trade a couple of years back. If we were going to cut him anyway (and since he wasn't willing to restructure, it sounds like we were), getting anything for him is a bonus.

Didn't see it coming but it had to be done. His replacement is already on the roster in Jernigan. And now we have cap room

we need another starter. We lost Canty too...

Hopefully they can bring Canty back at the veteran minimum. Solid veteran who knows the defense and good for depth.

Good move by Oz and Co. Ngata was a fan favorite but  I will have a different opinion of him if he restructures or extends with the Lions and takes less pay this season to play for the Lions than the 16 Million cap hit he was expecting the Ravens to pay him.

The thing that everyone is going to try and forget is that we are still paying 8 million for a guy that isn't on the team.  Add Ray Rice's money into that sum and its 17.5 million of allocated Roster Money that is being allocated upon air.   That's right....vapor.  You'd prefer to have a guy on the field that your paying for right? even understanding the chance to come up with a gem in those later rounds.

So when one calculates how shrewd it was to trade a Pro Bowler for a relative song just remember those same wizards put the Raven's into a position where it was deemed necessary to make that move.  Now we can all hope the development of Jerrigan and Williams, Lewis More and Urban continue....but make no mistake upon the void left behind and why it is there.

Yes, the Boldin Trade.....hopefully not quite as similar because if it is we are in trouble.

Ngata wants to retire after this year. That's why he didn't want extension.

There could be some truth there, but I think it may be two years. Would have taken longer than that to spread out the $7.5 mil. bonus due and his salary and may be the reason they couldn't agree on the extension.

Thanks Ngata. You cost us Owen Daniels and Torrey Smith because you were being greedy. I get he needs to make money but he should have thought about the team before himself.

Both Daniels and Torrey signed contracts we could have attempted to match if he would have signed an extension in the first place.

How come we always getting low draft picks for good players. I mean shoot we traded Boldin for nothing.  We couldn't get a 3rd rounder for Ngata.

I know what the number was and Ozzie had to do what he had to do, but shoot we couldn't get a 3rd round pick.

I don't think we ever wanted to match the price that Torrey got. Has nothing to do with Ngata.

Somebody has to be willing to offer it.

And frankly, whats the difference between getting one third round pick and a fourth and fifth round pick?

well D line.  I'm also looking at DB, WR, TE and potentially RB if we don't sign anyone.

yeah but depth doesn't hurt in this league. I haven't followed much this season. I pretty much shut off football after we lost to the Patriots and they went all the way. If it was any other team outside of the Steelers I could have handled it, but ugh. So I'm way behind on all my NFL news.

We also will get Urban and KLM back next year as well as Williams and Jernigan being beasts

Economics 101... dead money is a sunk cost. It should have virtually no bearing on decision making, because there is no decision that can be made to alter that amount. Its a cost that was paid years prior that the Ravens decided to allocate over a period of time.

The consideration is... is Ngata worth $8.5M to this team? The answer, apparently, was no.

Think this also means less chance we take risks on character concern guys. Ngata was one of the leaders who added stability to the locker room, same for Torrey and Canty.

We have good leaders in place like Yanda, Flacco, Monroe, Sizzle, Webb (his roster status iffy), Daryl Smith, etc. We need to add to that culture.

I wish we could have worked something out with Ngata but I'm a huge B Will and Jernigan fan so I think we will be fine. I think we saw something about loyalty today with Suggs moving around money saving us 2mil plus while Ngata would not and I think that ultimately cost Ngata. Thanks Haloti enjoy Detroit

there's a difference. I mean you can still find great to good players later. And I give the Ravens more credit than anybody at finding undrafted players and turning them into studs. But typically first 3 rounds is where its at unless somebody drops because of baggage and character flaws. If you want a sniff at somebody thats going to line up and start from day 1 and be good at it I'd look to the first 3 rounds. There's always exceptions and things can always change in an instant, but outside of abs that are another animal entirely after the third its a little different imo.

I love the idea of signing Wilfork. I do wonder if there is a trade for either a wide receiver cornerback in the works with the glut of draft picks

Im not really sad. I understand he was a great player and in his prime was either the best or right next to it at his position, so I wont take that from him. That said I never really got attached to the guy like I have other players. I think a lot of it had to do with he always seemed disinterested to me. It may or may not be true but I think a lot of people felt that too which is why most people are not really all that broken up to see him go. In fact I am glad he is gone. his cap is off the books and one less headache from a greedy veteran next year that we wont have to worry about re-signing. His use of Adderall makes me wonder how much of this season was even him anyway.

I also look at it from the perspective that we got older. I was hoping we either restructured Webb or let him go, yes I know it would not have saved much, but next year it would have been a burden off of us. With that I was hoping for Davon house, I really like that we are letting old veterans go and whther trying or not actually getting younger on the team. We were moving in the wrong direction last year. I think AJ might be an exception at starter, but just want vets as depth in SOME situations. I would not even be opposed to letting Forsett go as I am sure it would net us a comp pick as would Torrey, McPhee, and OD which would most likely give us 2 drafts with 10+ picks. We would also probably have at least 4 or 5 in the top 100 picks of both as well so I am loving that.

I also look at the cap space that will be provided and then how much we will have next year, I am sure Jimmy will be resigned considering all the space that we have, and we will have purged the roster of all the posion contracts. I also think that we will be able to be far more active in FA then we normally would be and we might be in the hunt for some top guys considering we will have most of our young talent on rooke deals. We could alsol get Yanda extended with no sweat as well. Allin all it hurts this year but I love the possibilities that it is opening up for us in the future.
