Suggs restructured his contract!

41 posts in this topic

You do what you have to do I suppose but I thought Ozzie said a couple years ago he didn't want it to get to this point where we have to restructure contracts annually just to get under the cap each year. I like making fun of the Steelers salary cap woes. I didn't want us to join them! haha

Suggs is such a great dude. Lead by example. Means we have more time to deal with Ngata.

Good to see who cares about helping the team. Looking at you Webb and Ngata.

One area that players don't get enough credit/blame for is being a team player with respect to salary cap matter. Sizzle has always risen to the occasion.

The Ravens are in a tough position as a result of Rice's and Pitta's contract. These were both unforeseeable so I don't blame the FO. Also, we're at the tail end of contracts for star players such as Ngata and Webb. Sometimes, the stars just align in the wrong way.

He did. You only use it on players you plan on keeping. And now isn't a bad situation. He most likely retires a Raven and trying to make due past this off season, where we're mostly affected by Rices dead money.

Just to be clear, Suggs isn't taking anything less than he was already due.  He just turned base salary into bonus and get that $3M now, instead of in weekly installments in Sept-Dec.

It's nice and all that he was willing to restructure and take the money now, but it's not something that any other player wouldn't also do if asked.

You can thank Ray Rice for that.

But the point is that he did restructure so that the team could get what it needs...  doesn't matter that he'll eventually make what he was entitled to anyway...  It's being a team player.  And the man is definitely the epitome of a leader on this team.

He isn't the sole reason for our CAP woes...  But yeah, it surely didn't help matters at all.  I was kind of hoping someone would have signed him.  That would have relieved us of that issue... because once signed by another team that money is released.

Haloti ngata was asked last year but refused.

Just sayin.

Good point. I'm just happy it's opening cap space.

Side note, when Brady did the same, all I saw were fans here saying "he didn't take a pay cut, so?", but here, Sizzle will be praised as Saint Suggs...

only adds about $750,000 to our cap hit over the next couple years.... with annual increases of 10% to the cap its a bargain. Shouldnt hurt at all.

You all are comparing apples to oranges.

What Suggs did is called a "simple restructure" (base salary to bonus, no money lost).  Ngata did not refuse a "simple restructure" last year.  He declined a contract extension that would have rewritten the last two years of his deal and extended it.  The Ravens and Ngata could not agree to numbers.  It happens - that doesn't make him not a team-friendly guy.  Heck, we have no idea what was even offered to him?!?

What Suggs did was take the same amount of money, just earlier.  If the Ravens had offered a "simple restructure" to Ngata last year, he would have gladly taken the money in March instead of in weekly installments in the Fall.  All players would.

Sorry, there's nothing magnanimous about it from Suggs perspective - it's the same money earlier as a bonus, thus calculated differently for Cap purposes.

LOL

I laugh at fans etc that constantly thank the players for restructuring. This isn't a pay cut, he is just getting more money up front, why any player wouldn't restructure is beyond me.

They ravens were desperate for cap space after tenders.

That's exactly true, but he did it in order to save the team, keep players, and allow others to be signed.  No one has stated he's taking less money...  only freeing up space.  And I really don't see others stepping up and doing it.

The team has to offer it to them, I bet every player would restructure if asked because it puts more money in their pocket immediately.

If asked, all players would do it.  It's a no-brainer.

The reason others aren't is because they aren't being asked because it pushes more money onto future Cap and potentially creates more dead money to be dealt with in the future.  Teams generally avoid doing so because of that (or do so very conservatively).

True. My question is where do you think this recent cap money will be applied? Will go towards Ngata, acquiring FA or secured for future years?

What is Ngata thinking? And the Raven's?

I gotta believe he figures he will net more if the Ravens release him to the open market, especially after Suh hit the jackpot. He'll still get the $8M (?) the Ravens owe him, but he'll probably land more from teams with more cap room. I think he might get 3/36.

The Ravens will either agree to keep him at his $16M cap number, or they'll wait until they've reached tentative agreement with players they think can benefit the team more with the $8M they'll get by releasing Ngata,

I have no harm feelings against any player going for the big buck contract, but I have utmost respect to those willing to restructure his contract to help out the team.

Thanks Suggs for helping out the team and Ravens nation.....

If Ngata wants the bigger money elsewhere, good luck with him.  no hate toward him....

It shows Suggs is the real leader....

The money saved really just gets them under the Salary Cap, so that's it at this point.

Obviously, getting something done with Ngata or Webb or Yanda or Koch as far as extensions will go will create more.

Or releasing someone will too.

Thanks. The timing on this day just made me wonder...what is the target cap savings to secure Ngata? $14MIL, $12MIL, $10MIL off his current contract cap hit to stay within reason?

Thanks. If the Suggs move was to add to that they'll be really business today finding that other $4MIL or so today. If not, it could go towards a FA we're targeting. This is getting more and more interesting. Gotta' love our FO.
