Pernell McPhee going to the Bears

59 posts in this topic

Considering he was already being double teamed here, I think he'll thrive.

What many people are missing is that many times, offenses gave more attention to McPhee than Suggs or Doom.

I wouldn't go that far..

Like what GMs typically say...you Dont pay for what he has done in the past, you pay him for what he can do for the future. Bears see him as a primier Dlineman. Guess we will see what they have in plan for him. I know I'll be watching few more bears games than usual..

He's way better with his hands than people give him credit for.

I think McPhee will end up a Pro Bowler, probably the first big Raven defender to leave and still have success. I think very highly of him. He's a very talented and athletic player. That being said...

Of course McPhee was a beast for us when on the field. The question is how does he hold up with a full game's or season's worth of snaps. The most productive pass rushers are usually the ones that get breaks.

He's had trouble staying healthy. I do think that the durability concerns are legitimate. However, he seems to be better off on the outside as a DE. If the Bears keep him at DE, he'll probably be fine.

7.5 sacks as a situational pass rusher is good, but you have to be concerned about only playing half the snaps.  Expecting him to be a full time starter will decrease his performance, though he has yet to hit his ceiling.

Playing next to guys like Suggs Ngata and Doom, Brandon Williams no doubt helped him, and he was more rested.

8 million a season is insane.  You are paying him a million per sack.

I think he should fit in well with the bears 4-3. He can rush the passer from both the DT and strong end positions.

That's what a good passrusher goes for. At least he is better than Kruger in my opinion.

Agreed it's his turn just like it was Krugers and Ellerbe's  and now word is Ellerbe is going to be let go by the Dolphins.

Kruger at least did decent this year. 11 sacks. He's still horrid against the run but at least he can pass rush.

Ya just like everyone else I hate seeing our guys leave.

Yes, good pass rushers get that kind of money.  But I wouldn't call 7.5 sacks under the 8 million a season category.

You don't pay for the past season. You pay for what you project him to be worth in the future. McPhee should be a beast in Chi-town.

Not to mention he is one of the few players that can line up inside or outside and get great pressure

I thought I heard the Bears are switching to a 3-4 (making McPhee an OLB)?

I have serious concerns about his durability. Those knees worry me. I love McPhee and think he's a special player. I'll be cheering for him to have a Pro Bowl year and get his first nod.

They are switching to 3-4 after hiring Vic fangio.

With the departure of Torrey and Pernell, from the draft class of 2011, only Jimmy Smith remains. Also gone/going: Jah Reid, Tyrod Taylor, Tandon Doss, Chykie Brown, Anthony Allen. Life in the not for long NFL is fluid.

Congrats Pernell! Would have loved to keep you in Baltimore - youre a special player, a hard working young man on the rise. You played the game the right way, Like A Raven.

It's a business so go maximize your earning potential while you can. Best of luck and I think he'll really thrive under Vic Fangio. He knows how to move guys around the line to exploit match ups. McPhee is a matchup nightmare, capable of winning 1 on 1's, defeating 2 on 1's, stout against the run, can rush the passer from the inside of off the edge. I think he'll be the 1st Raven defender to go get a big contract and actually live up to it. $8 mill/ yr is a bit steep, but I see him becoming a pro bowl type player.

People mention the 7.5 sacks as a knock, but that doesnt account for all the hurries, hits and pressures he had. Not only that, his presence drew attention and really opened things up for Suggs and Doom to do their damage. I thought he was underrated but this deal shows that the league understands and realizes potential greatness when they see it. I think he'll actually progress as a full time player and become a perennial 10 sack guy.

Nothing but Love Pernell! Ravens Nation will miss you. GO get that money and then when you;re tired of losing, come back to us on a team friendly deal to get your 2nd super bowl. See you in 4 years Pernell!

Art Jones is playing very well in Indy

I'd argue playing alongside Ngata, Suggs, and Doom opened up for McPhee, not the other way around

Good luck to him nonetheless, but there's a reason Newsome is willing to let him leave. We'll see if he can live up to the contract with an expected full starting role after playing less than 50% of the snaps

Go back and look at the tape. McPhee often faced double teams which allowed Doom to go 1-on-1. For much of the season he was rated higher than both Doom and Sizzle, was getting more pressures, hits and hurries but just wasnt getting to the QB.

After about 6 games of wreaking havoc teams started shifting focus. I'm not saying he made their seasons.... theyre obviously great players in their own right. Just saying that McPhee doesnt get nearly enough credit - its always like youre saying that those players around him made him.

Looks at the tape - tells a much different story.

And we let him go, no because he wasnt a great player... but because someone else was willing to pay him as if he's a HOF player. We're not in that business.

--

Also on Art Jones. He played ok... not nearly up to his contract though. -10 grade overall from PFF ... not saying the PFF is the holy grail or anything, but a -10 is somewhat telling.

Again, though, can he handle a full workload as a starter? He's always been very fresh coming in off the bench with rested legs. He has bad knees. The fact that the Ravens just said, 'He's gone," prior to free agency and didn't attempt to work out an actual offer, as far as I know, and they didn't tag him. They could have cut Ngata to work something out with McPhee. Again, we'll wait and see, but I'd be wary

Actually, I was going off of PFF for that. I thought he raised his grade, but I misread it. I can't stand watching the Colts, except for Luck

It's tough to see Pernell walk. But remember it happens every offseason. Remember that Pernell was a sixth round pick. We'll get a 4th maybe a 3rd for him. We will get comp picks for Torrey and Daniels and potentially Forsett as well.

McPhee was a beast last year but was always a Kruger/Ellerbe/Art Jones type. One of those guys you fully expected to leave in FA so it doesn't really bother you when it happens. Losing Torrey on the other hand hurt a lot more because we expected him to be a Raven for a long time.

I'll miss the nastiness McPhee brought to our pass rush but as far as the bears are concerned I don't think you can just plug him in and get the same results, in a lot of ways he was a product of our system and benefited from a lot of 1 on 1's playing next to  Ngata, Suggs, Doom, Brandon Williams... in chicago he's going to see substantially more attention and double teams because of their lack of complimentary pieces.

Agreed. The impact will be felt big time by the versatile McPhee. He's played every position from 1-tech to rushing backer, even a "stand up rushing nose" a couple times. Homeboy is a DAWG. Big mistake not to keep him. Our D is losing a lot of Nasty. last season Ihedibo, this yr Ngata & McPhee. Hope Canty is able to stay.

They had to sign him  Urlacker is now sporting a tie.  Besides that, Chitown people need something to take their mind off Cutler

Very Good view  Excellent.  Our system is another reason why other teams want former Ravens

Hopefully the contract is huge... Hopefully Torrey's is too.

Some high comp picks would be nice

Brilliant. I hadn't even thought about that yet. Hopefully their Huge pay days do result in some good Compensatory Picks next year.

I never thought McPhee would get that type of deal. I was hoping we could have extended him in the first half of the season, let's remember through the first 5 or 6 games McPhee barely played and had little impact. Then he got sacks in consecutive games disappeared for a long stretch before finishing strong in the final 3 games and playoffs.

After seeing 40M, the only way I could consider losing McPhee a big mistake is if he goes out next year gets 15+ sacks, making himself a top tier pass rusher. ( because at that point he would be a younger more valuable pass rusher than Suggs & Doom whom are much older ).

McPhee provided versatility, but we have to remember he wasn't an every down player, we often put him in position to win one on one battles because the players around him would face double teams.

His rookie I thought McPhee would be a breakout stud for us but then he faced nagging injuries next 2 seasons.

He actually followed Krugers path of uncertainty being moved from DE to OLB. Not doing much for multiple years then having success as a situational player.

I do agree we could have used The Gravedigger last season
