Pernell McPhee going to the Bears

that's huge...

i can't help it, but... salary is considered in compensatory picks, isn't it?

If we don't sign anybody with a contract similar to that (very unlikely), yes we get a compensatory pick. Likely a third rounder which would be awesome because then we can make moves in this year's draft.

Looks like we could be getting 2 3rd round comp picks next year, losing players stings but I guess this helps a little.

Hopefully the contract is huge... Hopefully Torrey's is too.

Some high comp picks would be nice

Out of curiousity, if either one of them is hurt and misses a good portion of the 2015 season does that have any impact on our comp pick compensation.

Yes it does

Not necessarily; the Ravens were still able to get a 5th-round comp pick for Ed Reed, last year, despite his disastrous 2013 campaign.

At worst, both Torrey Smith's and Pernell McPhee's compensatory picks will yield the Ravens 2 4th-round picks, at least. How they perform will only boost what the Ravens get in return.

Comp picks are based off of salary but as you say will go up or down based on playing time, making the playoffs and postseason honors like the Pro Bowl.

All I can see is a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick for next year. Take care Pernell, and don't forget your grandma bud! Get her out of that rut now that you have money.

I would have cut Ngata to offer him that same deal, but that's why I am not a GM. I think he is worth every penny though.

We'll be swimming in comp picks, too, looks like.

This is what I'm excited about...Will give us some nice flexibility in the future.

He earned that contact.  Props to him.  Sad to see him go but I was 100% prepared for this one.

Hope bears use him the right way so he can thrive.

You mean only playing 47% of the snaps. With that money he's gonna have to be a full time player and the Bears as of now don't have that good of a DLine.

Gotta see how he tranisitions from splitting reps in a top 5 front 7 to bring the only person of note in that front 7.

Considering he was already being double teamed here, I think he'll thrive.

What many people are missing is that many times, offenses gave more attention to McPhee than Suggs or Doom.

He's way better with his hands than people give him credit for.

Of course McPhee was a beast for us when on the field. The question is how does he hold up with a full game's or season's worth of snaps. The most productive pass rushers are usually the ones that get breaks.
