Could Aiken and/or Brown fill in for Torrey?

209 posts in this topic

If Brown was that good he would've seen the field more last year. His rookie season was a function of having literally nobody else to throw too. I'm glad that the FO isn't like the fans in just trusting these guys, as they've made it apparent they're willing to add WR talent in the draft. Glad they learned from the Tandon "the new Boldin" Doss experiment.

And I don't want any new player to be what Torrey was. I want him to be better.

I have said it before an will say it again I believe Brown and Aiken can do it we honestly wont know until they are given a legitimate shot. That being said I would not be upset if Oz and Co. bring in another veteran but what I would really like to see is us using the first pick to draft the next young SSS, Andre Johnson, Juilo Jones, Jordy Nelson, Randy Moss or  Jerry Rice or you name the guy. It would be nice to see Oz draft the next big time WR and watch him play his career out as a Raven and see him and Flacco set some serious records both team and league.

Jordy nelson mixed in-between those names is rather amusing :P he's really good but cmon..

Sometimes fans think that anybody that puts on a home team uniform will be a pro bowl caliber talent. Yes there are #1 WRs picked in mid to late rounds but fans forget that for every Antonio Brown there are 20 David Reeds. For every Allen Hurns there are 100 undrafted WRs that gets released. BTW on a side note Allen Hurns and Abbrederis were 2 of my mid round favorites!! I have no idea how Hurns went undrafted?? And I dunno how anybody can want Devin Smith in Round1 and be content if he gives the team the same as Torrey.

Like I said name your own... He is their #1 Cobb was supposed to be but J.Nelson has always put up decent numbers.

I don't know about replace Smith. Torrey Smith was a great receiver and I don't think any receiver "replaces" another because every player plays differently. I like Brown with his speed and he has good hands. I think the answer will be clearly after the draft and any more possible free agent signings.

I think all people mean when they say "replace Torrey" is the speed element.  Before he showed up the cover 2 defense would give Joe all kinds of nightmares - take a look at his numbers vs. the cover 2 or against LeBeau's zone blitz before Torrey got here to after, it's ridiculous the amount of improvement Joe had.  From 2008-2010 we had a lot of slow receivers and as a result a lot of safeties would cheat forward on us and make life miserable at times, and we didn't have anyone to make defenses pay for blitzing.  With the speed of Torrey and then Jacoby, that made a lot of difference because corners had a lot more trouble covering them 1-1 than they did with guys like Mason and Clayton and Houshmanzadeh.  I wouldn't expect it in the first round unless it's a well-rounded player like Devin Smith, but it wouldn't surprise me to see the Ravens use one of their 4th rounders on a guy like Chris Conley if he's there or a guy like Stefon Diggs.

Players drop balls.... it happens.

If you put yourself in a QB's place at that moment its like your driving a car through an intersection at 40 mph avoiding someone aiming at your door and you have to get through in a split second of time.  We don't know what the pressure is all about but we certainly have lengthy opinions..

I think we need a faster WR than Marlon, Aiken, or Camp out there to keep the defense honest. I'd like a healthy rotation of WR's Like SSS, our draft pick, and Brown. Then Camp, Aiken, and other draft pick come in. I want us to have what the Steelers had at one time with Wallace, Brown, and Sanders. A speedy three that just had the defense overwhelmed. I'd like two Wr's like Jaelen Strong, and Devin Smith out there with SSS. They can all get open and catch. When SSS retires after this year you have Strong, Smith, and Camp. I want something like that for Joe to have.

I love the thought... Until the rookie deal runs out and the wr leaves for 10 mill a year bc we can never afford to pay someone that much.

Then you get a comp pick and either draft another or more appropriately have already drafted a guy to groom in his place e.g. we had Brandon Williams and Timmy Jernigan so Haloti Ngata's contract became expendable.  Or the Steelers letting Mike Wallace and Emmanuel Sanders go because they had Antonio Brown and re-upped Brown before he was offered a double-digit contract.

I still like the path. I want it as well. Just venting on the frustration of always losing players, but we are used to it.

Yeah, but ultimately the players that are essential cornerstone pieces, we keep.  Very rarely do we let a guy go and end up regretting it later.

valid point. It would be very interesting to see what happened if we would of hands Dez or Julio and see how much we would. Of gave them.

That Brown signing saved them. I want Joe to have a receiver like that.

I like Aiken & Brown but we need a stud WR .Joe has never had one to throw to and I'm  sure

his stats would skyrocket if it ever happens.

Generally speaking,Joe has had nothing but scrubs to throw to.

Name one Pro Bowl receiver he has thrown to?

If you mean receivers he has thrown to that he helped reach to the Pro Bowl then that's zero but a receiver like Anquan Boldin was actually coming off a pro bowl season after being traded to The Ravens. I don't really think The Ravens need a stud receiver at all. It's been proven many times that it's not absolutely needed to reach the playoffs or super bowl. I know Flacco has never had that elite receiver but I wouldn't necessarily call Derrick Mason, Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith, and Steve Smith scrub receivers.

I don't think we need a Dez, Megatron or Julio. But even someone like a... Actually can't think of a name. Just someone reliable. Actually... Like a boldin. When we had boldin and Torrey I was completely content with our wrs.

every single year ravens fans hoot and holler about drafting an "elite receiver" in the first round. will never happen. this team will always draft defense. the only time we went crazy on offense is the year we completely revamped our team and coaching staff. so long as our team is run by the current front office, we will not get an "elite receiver". unless we randomly draft some hidden gem in the middle rounds.

Flacco probably won't get to throw to an elite receiver, ever. We haven't drafted in the top ten since Flaccos draft

and lets hope we never draft in the top 10, atleast with our own pick.

I'll give you several - Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Golden Tate, DeSean Jackson, Brandon LaFell.  All guys who weren't drafted in the first round that went on to become very productive, dependable players with the right quarterback

Yeah I saw that  and last year was Torrey Smith worst year drop rate wise. He doesn't usually drop that many passes atleast he hasn't in the past.

I'm not kidding you at all. Torrey dropped like 6 or 7 passes in his rookie year, dropped 3 passes in 2012, dropped 6 passes in 2013, and dropped 10 in 2014 last year which makes it his worst year ever  in the drop passes department.I'm not saying Torrey had the most reliable hands but how you talking you would have thought he dropped 10 to 15 passes every season he's been here which far beyound the truth.

every single game, literally every single game i watched when torrey smith was a receiver for the ravens, i saw AT LEAST 2 or 3 dropped passes.

and thats just dropped passes, add in PI calls and misroutes, and constantly getting manhandled, dude was one of the softest receivers in the league.

10 dropped passes isn't every game

If you are going to count all the Off PI, then you have to mention that he caused more defensive PI calls than anyone in the leauge.  It goes both ways.

lol no i meant defensive PI calls, dude is soft. steve smith is the one that draws offensive PI because hes aggressive, fights off the defender and attacks the ball. i'll take him, his receiving skills, and his offensive pi calls any day over soft torrey.
