What is the worst contract the Ravens have ever inked with a player?

pitta got the 4th highest in guaranteed money amongst all active TE while he never was even considerd a top 5 TE lol.

he only had 1 productive season which was in 2012 and he signed a 5 year 32 mil 16 mill guaranteed contract in 2014 after he just came back from 1 freak non contact injury.

that was a lot of money for a TE who never shown he was among the best and who basicially only saw snaps on passing down while other TE handled the run blocking.

only graham and Rudolph got more guaranteed money and Julius Thomas this season.

to compare this : rice  got a 5 year 35 mil 15 mil guaranteed in 2012 after he had 3 seasons where he was among the top RBs in 2009 2010 and 2011 with 2009 and 2011 being pro bowl and all pro 2nd team seasons.

all 3 seasons he was top 3 in yards from scrimmage as well.

ow and after he signed his contract he was very important in that 2012 season ( especially in the regular season) in our route to a SB win.

He was also a pro bowler in 2012.

so comparing both their contracts and the consider both their production before they got the deal and after they got the deal , id say pitta contract is much and much worse then rice.

2013 well we all know how bad that o-line was and it probably would have take a primed barry sanders to get any production on the ground from a RB since he would have had to evade/break tackles only to get back to the LOS lol.

If Pitta had remained healthy all signs pointed toward an extremely successful career with Joe. Don't know of anyone that thought differently.

No question the 2013 O line was terrible, but RR was running in cement and often just fell down before contact. Watching him run that year was as bad as watching Ed Reed tackle at the end. lol

me and T3hRaven said it at the time and got slaughtered for it here. Rices was an awful contract from the get go, wife beater or not

It wasn't great, but I don't think it was so bad given it's structure - basically 2013 and 2014 were the cap-eating years.  But I agree and I think several of us said at the time that it's not really a good idea in general to invest heavily in any running back because of the nature of the position and the relative ease of getting production out of unheralded guys.  Fortunately this time around I believe Forsett was signed to a good contract and should be productive for the next few years through it.

New idea , Ozzie should have given Joe his money before 2012 assuming the result would have been the same.

I believe Joe wanted 13-15mil.

No, the FO wanted 15, Joe asked for 15 with more guaranteed money, so they told him to play out his rookie deal and he did.

In terms of the worst contracts issued by the Ravens from a monetary perspective , I can think of 3:

1. Pitta

2. Flacco

3. Foxworth

There is a possibility there may be more but those 3 definitely stands out!!!

There were alot of Flacco fans, who were hoping, that Oz would sign Joe to a new deal before his final year. Gotta love how all the critics demanded Flacco to play his rookie deal out and prove he can play and now many of them are bellyaching over the results.

The organisation should've signed him no matter what he wanted in 2012. We never had a franchise QB before him and Oz and company should've seen it coming, that he only would get more expensive. Joe almost got us to the SB that year already, if it were not for Cundiff or Lee Evans...well, you know the story.

And Rudolph is just as injury prone as Pitta with about the same production on the field.

But he only ended up costing the ravens about 3 million.

Worst contracts by ozzie. I dunno to many to choose from. Pitta for one, Guaranteed $$ to a TE who couldn't even run when he signed the contract. Ray Rice,$40mil to a RB with tons of carries since college and clearly already had lost a step. Then there's another $7mil/yr to a wildly inconsistent Left Tackle thru his NFL career. The Jags traded him and wanted no part resigning him. Add it all up and a CFL team can sign more talent than the ravens. Ravens off season resembles a very small market baseball team.

Did you expect any different?

Mike Preston, of all people, actually made a beautiful point on why Joe has earned his contract:

"The Ravens might not have a player more resilient than quarterback Joe Flacco. In eight seasons, he has gone through three coordinators, as well as four regular starters at right tackle, four tight ends, four left tackles and four No. 1 receivers, including Torrey Smith.

Yet Flacco keeps winning, and winning and winning."

A little bit out of context, but this does tell you just how much stability a franchise QB can give a team. No wonder they are this expansive.

Little out of left field seeing an article like this from Preston.

Good read.

Joe's contract looks like a bargain after the numerous contracts that followed.

I do firmly believe that quarterbacks as a whole are over paid, but Flacco shouldn't be faulted for cashing in, and really, the first three years were very cap friendly. I'm sure he'll restructure and be playing here for another 6 years after this year.
