Jacoby just released.

We should've let him go a year ago imo.

Definitely agree with that. I still don't know why we signed him for so much. He might have been worth half that deal, if that.

The timing of the release is odd to me. The Ravens only save 750k, which is hardly much at all, so they must have something planned for free agency, hopefully getting a worthwhile receiver

They didn't want him to count against next years cap so no post June 1st cut

Thanks to Jacoby Jones who defined our return game.  When I think of his carreer I never really think of him as a Texan but more as a Raven.

I will really miss Jacoby. I really wished for him to step up last year, because it looked like was ready to step up. I wish him the best. I hope that a team picks him up.

Jacoby was a part of some of the most exciting and impactful plays in Ravens' history.  I'll always appreciate him for that and the fun/quirky personality he had both on and off the field.

He was a genuinely good guy it seemed and I'll always respect how he deflected the media trying to assert he was the "actual" MVP of the Super Bowl.  Never without hesitation did he respond with "the right guy got the award".  He just seemed to be a Raven, a bit of an odd duck that the organization let be himself and he appreciated it.

While kind of an obvious release, I'll miss him.

Expected this to happen but doesn't make it any more palatable.

Thanks for everything, Jacoby. Best of luck to you.

He is quick, not fast. The Ravens will look to fill the KR role with someone else. Campanero is not the answer as a KR.

Okay, but I'm asking why not release him next year?

Guessing that it's more of a desire to move on rather than a cap saving move.

yeah and we still pay for matt elam....

and i said the game. he's a top returner... one heck of a luxury for 750k

We pay Elam because it costs more to cut him than to keep him.

And I'd consider $750K a bit more than I'd like for a one dimensional kick returner in a league where touchbacks are frequent...

I suppose so, just kinda confusing to me... just a little.

My assumption is that they needed the $750K for some RFA tenders. There's plenty of guys, like say a Miles or a Levine, that perhaps we'd have a difficult tendering without that cap space.

I think we evaluated the roster and determined his chances of making the team as a pure returner was slim, so we did the honorable thing and let him go now so he can search for another team.

It's really only ~$300K in saved cap space with the rule of 51, so this was not a money related move.

Why keep him? What will he provide at his price that couldn't be found at a way cheaper price? Yes he still had a great average as a KR this past year but that's all.. Had 4 fumbles and literally had no impact on the offense at all

He offers literally nothing as a WR and with the depth at DE and LB, they won't have the luxury of keeping someone on roster just for KR

I think we're going to use Jackson and Campanaro as return specialists and probably draft a guy who can replace him.

I hope it's only occasional use for Camp.  Seems he may turn out to be most useful in the slot and don't want to see him getting smashed repeatedly.  lol   He's not the most imposing physical specimen, but has huge heart.

As rmw pointed out, due to the rule of 51, it's a cap savings of about 300k, so good luck finding an actual role player for that price

you do realize the cap is like 143 Million right? 750k for a guy who without his plays we possibly never win the Super Bowl. 750k for a guy who single handedly won us the minnesota vikings game 2 years ago with his td return. he's electric... i don't really care if he is one dimensional... his one dimension isn't just good... it's excellent.

Yeah I agree. But I think that's what we'll end up doing. If you recall we eased Campanaro into the role last year. I think it could well become permanent.

Part of why he was ineffective but his average looked good is he would field the ball from 7 yds or deeper in the end zone and run it out every time. He would then get tackled on the 15, netting at 23 yd return.

It was two years ago. Certainly wasn't this year. You never pay for the past. You pay for future production.

so did you miss that he was the 3rd best return man this year? that's what he forte is... returning kicks... you know averaging 30 +yards a return...

See my other quote. His average is deceiving. He took the ball out from deep last year and got worse yardage, but that made his yds per return look good. He would take it from 7 yds deep and get it to the 17 yd line and that's a 24 yd return. Looks good for the stats but hurts the team. He also fumbled a ton.

Now he is failing at the only thing he is worth to the team. Why keep him? Sentimentally value?

1. No good business owner has ever once paid somebody for something they did in the past. Whether or not Jacoby was incredibly valuable to our football team three years ago has a precise 0% relevancy to his value on this team currently. Luckily, our FO is smart enough to understand this concept, and their decision underlines this concept.

2. Being excellent at a phase of the game that the league itself is attempting to phase out AND players can phase out themselves doesn't really hold a lot of value.

3. You say he IS electric. The majority of people say he WAS electric. The difference between IS and WAS is something fans have always historically had a tough time accepting and grasping. There's people that still think Ed Reed is an "electric" football player.

Those people are wrong.

if he ran it out from 8 deep and averaged 30 yards he was still averaging getting us to the 22 yard line no thought the course of the season no?

Being the third best return man in the league (with return yardage being a largely irrelevant statistic naturally) isn't very valuable in the present day NFL. I think that's the point you are missing.

On average, he returned two kicks per game. That means, with that logic, he would net the Ravens 4 yards per game. How valuable do you think that really is?

yes and he fumbled away the colts game. KR isn't worth that much since the NFL moved the KO up anyway. It's gonna be gone sooner rather than later.
