And so the offseason officially begins in my books

Press conference done and it all begins

Wouldn't have won it all without you Jacoby. You're a part of one of the best Ravens plays of all time.

Why did we cut him now though? Big difference in money by not waiting for June 1st

Can still be designated as a post June-1 if they want him to be...

Strange they cut him now when I thought they would have saved more money if they proceeded to cut him at  a  later time

Don't understand the decision as the saving is minimal. Perhaps they have somebody they're looking at to sign immediately or they'd have waited till June 1st where they could've saved 2.5M. Just a curious situation.

Again, you can designate somebody as a post-June 1 cut without actually waiting until June to release them.

You just don't recognize the cap savings until June.

So basically if we don't get ngata restructured we can cut him as the June 1st but if we do then they can make JJ the June 1st cut?

I would assume we still get that cap space at that time. Making a little room now that will turn into more June 1st. Correct? Otherwise it makes no sense to me.

maybe they are trying to get the Torrey deal done asap and the jones's contract would free up what was needed to get done?

anyways, thanks Jacoby. but its Campanaro time

I doubt it.

1. I'm pretty sure you can't say you are going to designate a post June 1 cut and then change your mind later.

2. Cutting Ngata post June 1 accomplishes nothing since he's in the last year of his deal anyway. There's basically no upside to freeing up $8.5M in cap space in June when the overwhelming majority of FAs have already signed elsewhere.

Sorta expected this but it still sucks. I like Jacoby a lot. He took less money to resign here than the Giants were offering but his play on offense this year was painful to watch. He couldn't catch a cold.

I mean, I get there is a business side to it... but daaamn, I love Jacoby and I sure will miss him, even though he had a down year as a receiver...

And you guys, who are discussing the cap hit & savings... do you really think you have better insight on the matter than Ozzie has?

Well if you want to speculate, this move might mean we are looking for a big FA early rather than looking for gems in the later FA when june FA roster dries up.   Or it could mean Ravens FO looked through the possible cut roster in NFL, and didn't see the potential cut players after june to be feasible.

We have the same insight. There's only two options in regards to the salary cap, and everybody knows what they are.

I doubt it, considering the move frees up less than $1M in cap space. That's not enough to get even a marginal FA realistically, let alone a big FA.

Releasing somebody like Ngata would signal a shift towards potentially spending big in FA.

Bittersweet.

I really like Jacoby as a person and will always cherish the memories of that magic run with the Mile High Miracle and TD return in the SB. But keeping him on the roster going into next year at that salary just wasn't best for the team. He's been non existent as a wr since that playoff run and has been keeping himself on the team as a special teams ace. However last year even that role became questionably and he just lacked the "spark" as a returner that we came to expect from him. I thought he was noticeably more timid and was bracing for hits and dancing around instead of running like he was shot out of a cannon like he has in past years.

Thanks for the memories Jacoby! He will definitely be missed by Ravens Nation

Good, I wasnt a fan of the contract we have him in the first place. Basically a waste of a roster spot. He was a great KR, average PR, and below average WR. Even his KR numbers were misleading because he was bringing it out of the back of the end zone pretty much every time. He may have been averaging 20+ yards per return, but we were still starting inside the 20 a lot. But the writing was on the wall when Aiken was getting snaps and targets and JJ wasn't. The cap savings are probably marginal, but the roster spot is the most important part imo.

It's webb that has two years right..

And I was thinking the opposite.. Put the June 1st tag on him later if we don't use it on anyone else

But after seeing tweet about the dead money looks like they just want to eat the contract this year and not worry about any carryover

Guessing now it's just Ozzie trying to set Jacoby up for success with his next team by giving him most time possible
