New Deal for Ngata Coming?

375 posts in this topic

Where is all of this Ngata hate coming from all of a sudden?  Wow!

I agree, there is a ton of hate on these boards for Ngata right now. I am assuming it's just the average guy like myself that can't understand someone who makes more in one game than we make in a year, not willing to make a sacrifice for the team. I think folks would be more tolerant and understanding of Ngata if he were being asked to take a pay cut, but I think folks have a hard time understanding when he is just being asked to restructure and get the same amount of money at different times. I'm holding out hope though that this ends with Ngata back and all will be well that ends well.

Since Ngata is not a free agent and his contract has not expired is it possible that no new deal is achieved and he remains here?

I think this is the forgotten scenario.

I don't think he even has to make a sacrifice. A restructure usually means more cash now and a longer deal to spread the cap hit. So by saying no, he's saying he'd rather test the free market in a year, a la Ed Reed, then play out his career in purple and become a local icon. So yeah, it's hard to be much of a fan of his right now.

I'm just amazed at how one minute this fan base can sing the praises of our top players (i.e. Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Todd Heap and now Haloti Ngata etc.) and then once they don't do what fans expect or want them to do (i.e. take pay cuts to stay in Baltimore etc.) now all of a sudden they start trashing their names in this place!  Whatever happened to the mantra....

STAY CLASSY RAVENS?

When Ngata was out we lost some on our run defense but we gained on our pass defense. I would hate for Ngata to leave but at some point it can't all be on the FO.

The NFL lives and dies by the salary cap and players are aware of this when they sign those back loaded contracts. It is all but expected that a player will restructure when the cap hit becomes prohibitive. So, in this instance, I do put this on Ngata. Expecting the team to take a $16 M cap hit for one position is ridiculous.

I hate the idea of losing Ngata less than I do the thought of losing Ngata for absolutely nothing. We will get a compensatory pick for losing Torrey. Even is we just traded Ngata for a 5th rounder or something I can live with. I hate the thought of just straight up cutting him especially depending on where he signs.

Do you hate the thought of losing Ngata for nothing more than shelling out $16M for him? Preventing us from filling some serious needs? That is the choice such as it is.

The $16M is just his cap number. His actual salary is roughly half that. So if we lose him for nothing because of poor cap management than yes I would be upset.

Think about if we put him on the trading block last year what types of offers we would have gotten. Now we've backed ourselves into a corner.

Ngata is 1 of the fan favorites but I can just about guarentee you all if an extension is not done before Suh is signed both Ngata and his agent will get big heads about what he is worth. If thats the case then it will be better to let him walk and Next man up Williams and Jernigan start up front...

It isn't bad cap management it is how teams survive in the land of the salary cap. Contracts are back loaded and players are expected to restructure down the road if their performance warrants it, and released if their performance does not.

I guarantee you Flacco will be restructured before his big cap hit is even an issue that can be heavily discussed.

Yea, I completely agree with that no doubt about it.

Oh well, with Torrey gone, we can focus on Webb, Ngata and Forsett! Make it happen front office.

They already have contracts, Webb and Ngata.

Ngata is more to the Raven Defense than his raw numbers.  He is a leader and a stalwart force.  We've seen what the on the field results are when he is not present.

It will be a catastrophe if we cannot find a way to keep him a Raven.  It would go beyond the loss of Ngata, it would be more evidence of an organizational failure. All things are not unavoidable, but if they occur there is a reason.

honestly I've never seen ngata as a leader. he just been here for a while..his leadership skills are hardly noteworthy.

I know. Ngata needs to be extended so we can reduce the cap hit of 16 M and free up some space and Webb needs to take a pay cut so we free up more space. Sorry I wasn't lucid enough.

With Suh's mega deal going down in Miami, it looks less and less like Ngata will stay. Rumors are that they are about 1M/yr apart in their negotiations (that was before the Suh deal), bu I think some idiot team will end up paying Ngata more than his body can give them. It will suck for us surely if he leaves, but Ozzie and gang will have contingency plans.

I don't think Ngata will take a new contract with the Ravens.  He is bout to get paid, he is a few years from retirement and this is his last big payday. I bet the Ravens are offering him a 3 year 5 million per year deal. Ravens will end up cutting him, Ngata will go to a team like the Raiders who will pay him 10-12 mil per year for next 3 years.

I would bet their offer to him is more than that. I'd be banking on a similar contract to Suggs, likely at least in the $7-8M per year range.

After watching some of the free agent moves... and the Ngata deal at a stalemate what are everyone's opinion now... should we release him... still try to deal or what. Torrey is leaving... we don't need to overpay for Forsett. And if we have a lot of free agents next year to worry about.

btw Yanda is not only the best player on this team. He's also the best example. He should ( even though he wouldn't want it) be the Raven outside of Joe Flacco that this organization should be marketing.

This is Suh's 1st entrance to FA. This is Ngata's #2. Huge difference.

Let's not forget who paid Suh that ridiculous money either(out goes Wallace, in goes suh..just smh). What suh is paid shouldn't be a denominator for any honest NFL team that is truly in contention to win.

Can we just trade Ngata for like a 7th round pick or something now? He's gotta go, trading him gets us $13mil in cap. The Bears would take that.

To a point I see what your saying but does Ngata and his agent? All they see is $$$$$ and I would be willing to bet they will use Suh's new contract as a measuring stick of some type. Your right at Ngatas age logic says he probably wont get that much but we have all been witnesses to serious over spending on free agents by some NFL teams that being said Ngata is holding all the cards the only thing the Ravens can do by choice is release him or let him play under his current contract  if he is not willing to bend. And thats Just a fact.

It doesn't matter what Ngata and his agent think, unless other teams also think he's worth Suh money. Ngata does not have leverage. He's a past-30, injury prone DT with dropping production. Players like that are the ones who get released, not the ones who get pay days.

Like I stated before to a point I agree with you both how ever there are NFL teams that will pay big money to get Ngata maybe not 100+ Million but We have watched teams such as The Browns, Raiders, Dolphins and Redskins all overpay for aging players thats my point. Do I think Ngata is going to get a contract like Suh's No but they will be watching to see what Suh gets and use that as a measuing stick of some sort. All they see is $$$$$$ and the agent is right there wispering into his ear your worth more because he gets a percentage of the final payday.

Ngata doesn't have to take a pay cut. He knows the deal he gets in free agency if he gets cut will be as good if not better than the one he has right now. He wouldn't get Suh money but he'd break the bank. He has struggled a bit, but not that much, with injuries and his play is still at a very high level.

Well, remember that Ngata is making an $8.5 million salary this year. Do you think he'll make more than that if he leaves? I doubt he'll make more than $8.5M anywhere. If we cut him, he loses that $8.5M, and he might not get it back.

He'd definitely get more than 8.5 million a year. Despite the suspension, he turned in one of his better years this year. He is "only" 31 so he isn't ancient yet. He still has 2-3 for years of high caliber play.

Nope. 31 is ancient for DTs, especially DTs that are frequently injured.
