New Deal for Ngata Coming?

375 posts in this topic

You're kidding right? Ngata is one of the best players in the league still. I would say he's a top 5 defensive lineman in the NFL. The reason he didn't go to the pro bowl last season was because of his drug violation. He was the reason the defensive line last year and the pass rush was incredible. Did you not see him in the play offs or the 12 games in the season he did play? He deserves the money he signed that contract I would be happy to see him in a Ravens uniform playing for that 16 million dollars this season. It would be nice to extend him but he has the edge. Losing him creates even more dead money. It feels like every person wants to cut players who don't contract restructure when they are playing for their families and they are living up to their contracts.

Yeah thats the problem. I don't want my kids been given  a silver spoon. They need to work and make a living. Thats the issue with making 10's of millions of dollars..why do you want to turn your kid into a lazy bum. No one needs 30 million dollars to take care of a family

I'm not trying to suggest we're going to trade Ngata here, but if you don't want Ngata to go on the free market as a cut and would rather trade him, you gain leverage from teams hoping you'd cut him. This would, in turn, increase his value in the trade market and would help prevent us from looking desperate. By doing a restructure with Suggs, it reduces your desperation and gives you (the team) control.

Furthermore, it's not impossible that we retain Ngata at his current salary. We can always focus on Yanda as an extension to free up cap.

Good call. Nobody mentions anything about Yanda.

Both possible....... $8.5 mil. is not over the top for base salary and if he stays his pro rated bonus could be rolled over to the future in some sort of restructure/extension.

Pretty sure this the last year of his deal, so a restructure isn't possible

You mean the guy who played all 12 games last season and all the play off games? Hmmm..

doesn't mean he's not playing injured

its asinine

That is your family, not his. What do you think Ngata is doing right now? He is working his tail off to support his family. Each person needs a different income to support the wants they want in life. It is your choice if you work for 30K a year, 100K a year, or a few millions. He is working his butt off more than most people to play at a professional sport which he is one of the best yet so his family can live comfortably. There should be no hard feelings against the guy. Most people in this situation would take the money and those who said they would take less money don't know the entire situation or are lying to pretend they are bigger and better fans than the next guy. Tomorrow he could be paralyzed for the rest of his life and he may need that money.

He was still playing at a pro bowl level. If he was injured kudos. He was one of the best defensive lineman in the league last season.

The Ravens have $2.4M in cap space and unless they want to trade up and blow all their picks, they can't even afford a full draft class, let alone a FA

That number is going to change. There are moves that can be made ... but not many. The most important of those is Ngata. This is not over and just because we put ourselves in position where we don't need to have a deal done by 4pm is absolutely no indication that Ngata is going to go forward with his cap hit.

We just can't do it and have a complete team.

I'd actually argue, as would many others, that the pass rush improved without Ngata and I'd argue he's not even a top 5 DT. I'd take Suh, Poe, McCoy, Casey, Donald, Dareus, and Atkins over him off the top of my head as pure DT's and Watt and Bennett over him as players that can slide inside

He's definitely outside the top 10

At this point, as much as it sucks to say, I wouldn't care if we cut him. He is taking up 16 million and is apart of a group where we have the most depth (DL). Definition of the 80/20 Rule...

"For now, it looks like Haloti Ngata will play under current salary structure, $8.5 million, in 2015. He would have made a ton on open market"

Yes, Aaron Wilson said this, but I wholeheartedly disagree. Perhaps this was just a poor choice of words, but to say that this deal with Suggs now indicates that Ngata will play under his current salary is extraordinarily presumptive. All it means is that he'll be a Raven at 4:01 PM today and does not indicate that we're going to sit with this for the rest of the season.

One of the things the FO stated was that we need to build depth on the team. With our cap situation, if we do nothing with Ngata - every UFA ... gone. Prospects of bringing in even the lowest of FAs on the market in ... gone. We'll need to make a couple shifts with other players who are actually willing to work with the team just to sign our draft picks.

So - look at the roster as it is right now. Add a rookie class. Is that a viable roster? I would say absolutely not. So, is Ngata worth keeping, while giving ourselves zero roster flexibility? Again, I would say absolutely not.

Oh please

the most overpaid sportsman in the world are NFL players. They only play 16 games a season ( 20 at the most) and just workout for 3/4 of the year.

I work 5 times harder and more demanding jobs. If they played 32 games a season at least and it ranged for half the year I'd understand..i know markets dictate everything but please..

How do you restructure the final year of a deal?

restructure the cap figure into an extension..

Then say an extension. If you say restructure, most people will think of what Suggs just did

By the way, when you put "/", most people will think either or, which again would make them think of a situation like Suggs

Playing at an $8.5 mil. base salary does not necessarily translate into a $16 mil. cap figure.

I think I'll just step out of these conversations and wait for things to fall into their place.

Baseball is moreso than Football...  but hey, that's just my opinion.

that's a little unfair, for some players they never stop working even in the offseason they are still working on their craft, and if they played 32 games in a season not even joe flacco could stay healthy.

Did Suggs extend his contract?

Sorry you misunderstood.

Apparently if you work so much harder how are you not in the NFL? Those players have to work out hours upon hours a day and play at a high level to keep their jobs. How many players actually play 15 year careers? They have to pay for the rest of their lives because they dedicated all their time in high school, college, and then pro level. They are not with their family half a year because they travel and have to play.

So if you made let's say 50,000 dollars a year, and your company came up and told you "hey, we need you to take a 25,000 dollar pay cut from your salary or we are going to fire you" you would be fine with that? That is exactly what you're saying in this situation here. They are trying to make a living just like everyone else. They play a dangerous sport that not many people stay in many years risking their body. I agree having millions of dollars would be nice but it is not handed to them.

Also apparently my kids are "lazy bums"? Glad you need to bring profanity into a topic to because you can't get your point across. I work 60 hours a week at two part time jobs and I am a sophomore in college taking 15 credit hours this semester. I don't have kids, but I would want extra money around to protect myself and them if I did have them. The United States economy is far from stable. If they choose to live on a 30K salary to live for the rest of their lives of a 16 million I don't care it is their life and they will have to provide a certain income to get the certain things they want in life.

I'm glad you think that people who get paid more are lazier. Far from true. People who get paid more usually are the ones who work harder and get better educated so they are better suited for higher paying jobs.

If you can't tell the difference between taking a pay-cut from 50k to 25k a year, and 16m to say 8m a year then you need your head examining.

Okay first off, you can live a pretty good lifestyle just off the interest on about $3M , if that much. So yes, they are wayyyyyyyyyy overpaid.

Also, it is NOT a paycut . I don't know why everyone keeps on trying to make this claim to defend Ngata. He will get his guaranteed money no matter what, it just spreads it around for a more friendly cap situation on the books.

I just don't get the hesitation to cut Ngata, honestly

Well that's why you're not Front Office, but in end its likely you'll get your way. There's been some poor Front Office moves that have them on the precipice and they may get backed into doing something they know is not for the best.
