New Deal for Ngata Coming?

375 posts in this topic

That article is pure speculation.

Sources tell ESPN's Ed Werder the Ravens have made a "very good offer" to NT Haloti Ngata.

Baltimore wants to restructure Ngata's deal to try and soften his $16 million cap hit. While the Ravens have no intention of cutting Ngata, it's equally unlikely that he would accept a pay cut. A long-term extension that alleviates some of Ngata's cap burden seems like the fairest compromise. Ngata registered 31 tackles, two forced fumbles and two interceptions last season.

Did you post this just after seeing that it was from Bleacher Report, or did you actually read the article?

I read it. It's a series of quotes that may or may not add up to facts.

We're just trying to differentiate between reports and confirmed reports. We don't want to mislead people into believing something is not confirmed.

I'll be happy to keep Ngata if it means he'll come cheap. I'm just worried about keeping him with all our other guys coming due with contracts. I'm hoping it's a fair deal for both sides. I'd love to eat my words and have Ngata stay.

I wouldn't trust BR but the ESPN report(which I have seen also on PFT) confirmed talks about a new deal done. So at least we have something official and not just random reporting from BR.

I figured a new deal would happen, but I'm curious about what "a very strong offer" looks like and that's why I posted this. I doubt the Ravens go higher than their current offer if it's really that good, so it's up to Ngata to accept now.

Again, we're just trying to make sure "reports" aren't presented as something that is done. For example, the original title of this thread was "New Deal for Ngata" which sounds like an agreement was reached. Until the FO tells us otherwise, it hasn't been.

Rumors spread fast and wild this time of the year. We're just trying not to feed mis-information to our flock.

I honestly haven't had much of a clue at what the market value for Ngata at this age would be. My gut says the deal could look very much like Suggs deal, but that's just a guess.

Either way, I suspect it would have to have a signing bonus in at least the $8-10M range so that Ngata makes at least as much as his base salary would have been in 2015 ($8.5M).

While I definitely expect some cap relief for 2015, I still think he's going to carry a cap number in the $11-12M range for 2015.

I'm only expecting a relief of around $4 million for this season, but I'm wary of the numbers after and how long the deal goes for.

Ngata hasn't exactly shown to be extremely durable and usually seems to slow as the season goes. Not to mention it seems like he contemplates retirement a lot. I figured a pay cut wouldn't happen, but I just hope it's not too long of an extension.

For me, it could look something like...

4 years, $30M, $16M guaranteed, $10M signing bonus. Pay him base salaries of $1M, $5M, $7M, $7M respectively. Only the first two years salaries would be guaranteed.

Then, you'd be looking at cap numbers of $11M, $7.5M, $9.5M, $9.5M for the next four seasons. Could realistically cut him after 2016, and have about $4.5M in cap relief with $5M in dead money.

But then again, I have no idea if that's a low offer or not. Its more than Suggs got, but the guarantees and signing bonus are nearly identical.

He averaged $12.2M on his last deal, so I'd certainly think his next deal would put him at $10M a year average or less, and I'd think around $8M per year with half guaranteed is realistic.

I don't typically worry about guessing the logistics of salaries, but that does look extremely reasonable for the contract and it would definitely be a "strong" offer. I could definitely live with that if I were the Ravens

I just hope a deal gets done by the end of the week so we can move on and begin trying to re-sign Torrey and Justin. Then get a long term deal done with Tucker.

I wouldn't worry about Tucker. He's a restricted FA who we can easily tender, and I'm in no rush to give out long-term deals to kickers. They can go from being the best to out of the league in a matter of a season.

Based on the presser that just concluded, three things are very evident. One, Ngata will be here long term. Two and Three: Torrey will not be offered more money than he is worth ( so most likely gone) and Pernell McPhee will be gone as well.

The only other thing I could glean by reading between the tea leaves is that there isn't going to be a splash in free agency regarding CBs and DBs and we'll definitely be looking to draft a RB and WR in the higher rounds

They are going to offer the same kind of extension they gave Suggs. The numbers will probably be pretty close. If Ngata doesn't take it he will be let go imo.

If I were a betting man...

Ngata gets an extension, Torrey gets resigned for an extremely similar deal to the one already being reported to be offered last year, and Webb takes a slight paycut.

Everybody else is basically gone (McPhee, Forsett, Daniels). I think Yanda possibly gets an extension, but I think its going to be a like a mid-to-late summer type thing, so not immediately.

I hope it happens, but I also hope it doesn't prevent us from keeping/signing some other long term options.

I see we're still bickering over nonsense here. Glad I haven't missed much.

As for Ngata, good! Retire a Raven and lower our cap please!

I agree with most of what you said with the exception of Forsett and maybe even Daniels. If Daniels or his agent are reasonable with their demand, I think he comes back as insurance for Pitta.

If Julius Thomas hits FA, he's as good as gone from Denver.

If that happens, there's essentially nothing stopping Daniels from going to Denver.

I'd be in the minority ,but I'd gamble team dollars on McPhee right now, knowing that we have Williams too then to overpay Ngata. Not saying that either one of them can be him, but mark my words; Ngatas' play will level after this season. He is not hungry for 16 games a year. Mainly just playoff and Steeler games.

Ozzie just admitted that McPhee is going to be too expensive no matter what.
