Dean Pees

I see your point but nobody showed interest in Wade Philips  after he was fired from The Houston Texans, Nobody has shown interest in Jim Schwartz and he did great  job with The Buffalo Bills defense last year.

Redskins wanted to interview Schwartz, Bills denied the request because they wanted to interview him for their HC spot. I wouldn't call that "no interest".

And Phillips is in Denver. If we don't have an opening and promote him do you think Pees would be elsewhere as a DC?

So there's absolutely nothing Pees could have done to keep them from scoring 35 on us?

Melvin played poorly but you're being set up for failure when you're playing 10 yds off and the receiver catches a 5-yd curl with room to run.

In my mind, Pees could have reigned in the pass rush. Instead of having Suggs and Dumervil run around the tackles and having Brady easily slide up, try to collapse the pocket and look for deflections. You know they're trying to get the ball out fast, makes no sense to me to have pass rushers and corners positioned like they're expecting 7-step drops.

What do you do exactly? They get the ball out quick and we didn't have the corners to cover. Let's not forget NE had to break out all the stops to get those points. How many first downs or TDs did they pick up because of terrible tackling? I know there was at least 1 TD and two critical firsts.

NE did the same thing to an even better defense in Seattle, so it's not like Pees was the only DC whose defense couldn't hold up.

The criticism on Pees is misplaced plain and simple.

We simply missed alot of tackles that game. Pees put those guys in position to make plays and they couldn't.

I can't blame Dean for this L.

If the defenders are not making tackles, there is very little Pees can do. Simple fact. There's nothing any coach can do when his players miss tackles. This game is two things: blocking and tackling. If you can't tackle, you might as well put 11 cones out there.

As for the pass rush, you have to pressure them. Maybe we should have went for more deflections, but we all know how Brady does when he gets pressured. And for the record, we did give him a good amount of interior pressure.

They're not all Matt Elam, some of them can actually tackle. Is it reasonable to expect every open-field tackle to be made? When you play off that much that's what happens. The Patriots realized it and started playing small ball and forcing open-field scenarios.

The pressure was good early in the game when their offense was floundering and Brady was throwing hissy fits. They must have adjusted and we went away from it.

9 missed tackles in that game, 2 on Elam and 2 on Melvin. In contrast the Pats missed two tackles all game.

It was a poor performance by the players.

When the 07 secondary got lit up week after week due to McAlister and Rolle both being injured and Pryce injured and thus impacting the pass rush, did people blame Rex?  I don't recall him getting called out for having no choice but to play Derrick Martin, David (?) Pittman, and Corey Ivy.  I think there was another guy who started for us that year who's entire football career is just that one year.  I know I gave Rex that pass and I'll do the same for Pees.

Even with all the injuries, we were a top 10 scoring defense, #6 in points allowed and #8 in yards allowed to be specific.  Then his injured secondary went on to help hold the #2 passing offense to 15 offensive point.  Losing a close game to one of the best QBs of all time while fielding potentially the worst secondary in the league isn't a hit on the DC imo

I mentioned what I would do in that post, constricting pass lanes and potentially focusing more on our linemen helping us out looking for deflections. Saw a lot of wide rushes by Suggs and Dumervil which went nowhere. Just a suggestion.

Tackling was part of the problem but it's also not totally reliable to count on defenders to make 100% of their open field tackles. Our guys aren't Matt Elam, they can make tackles, but that's a hard situation.

Wasn't the exact same thing, we would have won if they'd only scored 28 pts like they did against the Seahawks. They also forced another turnover, another sack, held them to ~50 less net yards including 88 less passing yards, etc.

Not saying the secondary was made up of Ed Reeds and Ronnie Lotts but they weren't put in great positions.

Is that from PFF?

If Pees could ever get a general to man centerfield you'd see a lot more production from the defense especially in the turnover category. The corners could also play tighter knowing that somebody could have their back in case they do get burned. Its time to stick a true veteran that understands the defense and is also a sure tackler. That man is Lardarius Webb.

We've had our best defenses with Woodson/Reed!!

I believe he was a safety in school but he might be married to corner now

I'm surprised people aren't blaming him for the Edelman TD pass. Let me guess, other D coordinators would've seen that trick coming and stopped it, right?

I just don't think he has the coverage ability anymore to stay one on one with a lot of wideouts and right now we have only unproven talent manning the last line of defense which is forcing Pees to have the corners play back. I'm thinking he could be in the lines of Charles Woodson or Antrel Rolle which is something we desperately need. Imagine him and Will Hill patrolling the deep.

The problem is that many of those 35 points came from targeting Elam and Melvin, the weak links on the defense who also struggle with tackling. So...

Webb hasn't been a sure tackler since, like, 2011.

Melvin actually took all the blame for that TD, so they kinda can't blame Pees.

In  2014 I don't believe  Wade Philips  receive any interest at all  from teams during the offseason and yes he's the defensive coordinator for Denver right now but just last year there was no interest at all.  I don't know if  he told teams he was taking a year off or what and by the time Schwartz departed from The Bills there was still teams in need of a defensive coordinator such as The Raiders , 49ers,  Falcons, and Redskins(i think).

Yes I believe Pees would be a defensive coordinator else where if was available. Pee's resume as a defensive coordinator isn't bad at all  and I have seen worst/terrible  defensive coordinators get hired.

Nobody going to come knocking on the door for Wade Phllips either for head coaching job. One of the main reason why no team is going to be interested in Dean Pees as head coach because the guy is in his 60's .You not going to find many head coaches in The NFL that are 60 something years old because usually teams like to go younger.

Wade Phillips has been a head coach. He was noticed because of the way his defenses played. Dean Pees has never been a HC, but that's the beside the point. I don't like his approach to defense. If he tries to be aggressive and gets burned because of it, hes gonna go vanilla for the majority of the game. We also have been torched at will by Qb's, Peyton Manning who had a 8 touchdown game against us in 2013 and Big Ben had a 6 touchdown game in 2014.

Yep. They went at Melvin like a fighter beating on a cut. And dag, if you can't tackle, how can you expect to win? It really boils down to that simple fact. It wasn't the scheme or game plan.

Okay haters. Lets try to think this through.

Say you are a starting C.B. and you are not very good.

You are slower than the W.R. you are lined up against. Not just a little slower, a lot slower.

What to you do to minimize the receivers productivity?

What do you do to prevent the big play ?

I don't take this stuff seriously anymore. Probably The same people that were done with Kubes because he was too predictable lol.

People were done with Kubiak this season?? Sounds like staying away from the vent threads for the most part was one of the best things I did this past season.

Don't forget the game threads. The few times I lurked there, I saw too much hate on Kubiak.

Well apparently you and others do when you're all in the thread after the Pitt game asking where was the praise for Pees right?

Always want it both ways.

No way to defend that NE game. Injuries or not, he made no attempt to adjust to anything. Playing 7-10 yards off while they're dumping 5-6 yd passes on every single down is just insanity.

You fail to mention the one time he told Melvin to play close to the line he gave up a 23 yard TD pass. But some how thats on Pees though. How exactly did you want Pees to adjust? Send the house on every play and let Gronk eat the secondary alive? There was literally nothing more Pees ( Or any DC ) could have done against Brady with our practice squad secondary. The best thing anyone could have done would be keep everything in front of you and PRAY your secondary could make a damn tackle. But hey, Matt Elam and Melvin missing tackles is all Pees fault though.

I would love to see you as our DC. With you we would break records with practice squad scrubs because you have an answer for everything.

I'm calling it. If we adress the secondary in free agency this year... We WILL win super bowl 50. We don't need elite offensive talent. We need to retain the oline and give Flacco a new TE imo.

With that front 7 and a competent secondary. We have a super bowl caliber defense. I said it. We can stop the run and Rush the passer.

Agreed. We're a physical mismatch at pass catcher and 2 starting DBs away from the prize. I know our front office is ecstatic to go into the offseason with only a few real needs. I expect us to fill those holes then load up on the pass rush.

So, when the players are showing an inability to make open field tackles, you scheme for them to make open field tackles? Come on.

Now, I agree some of the players dropped the ball, but they can't take all the blame like you say. Some fault at least falls on pees.
