Whats the thought on our defensive performance vs Patriots after seeing the SB?

38 posts in this topic

Yep, no question. Their secondary was hurting bad, just as ours was.

Joe could've done it. The seahawks secondary was injured. Joe played well against the pats secondary, which matched the hawks in the superbowl

With Sherman playing with a torn ligaments in his elbow, Thomas playing with a torn labrum and dislocated shoulder, Chancellor playing with a torn MCL, and Lane getting knocked out of the game with a broken arm? Probably.

I'm a bit skeptical about the idea that many QB's could have done the same, I just think there are maybe 4 QB's that could have done that or better and that includes January Joe.

Brady numbers looked much better vs a potentially " one of the supposely greatest defenses in NFL history " in the Seahawks than he did playing against us so Im curious to see people views about our defense now. Has it changed, is it still the same, is what Brady did to the Seahawks irrelevant to us, etc...?

Well, offenses play better agaisnt some defenses on any particular Sunday than any other. To answer your question, it is best to pose another. What would you make of the KC defense based on the way they pummelled Brady into submission then? Would they be the greatest D?

What the Patriots offense did to the Seahawks defense is irrelevant to me because the Ravens were up on the Patriots by 14 points on 2 separate occasions and Brady and his offense was still able to mount 2 come from behind drives on the Ravens defense to win the game.

The main thing I got from it was that Pees, Webby, and Melvin were wrongfully called out by this board after the Pats game. The Patriots were doing the exact same thing to the Seahawks that they did to us.

It looked like the Hawks were playing off on them giving up the dink and dunk passes when really it is the clever play design by Josh McDaniels.

Well, it can't be nobody's fault. If it's not Pees' fault, it's on Elam and Melvin. If it's not on Elam and Melvin, it's on Pees. Since it's the missed tackles that really killed us, I'm blaming the players.

Although, press coverage may have been a better gameplan than zone, since it limits the short, over the middle routes that killed us. That would be on Pees. BmoreBird22 could offer more insight on that.

I'd argue that blowing a 10 point lead in the last 8 minutes is worse than blowing two 14 point leads before the 4th qtr begins.

Not saying their overall performance was worse. Just a thought

Pats used man beater routes, zone was a decent call. However, you have to make tackles and you have to force Brady to throw deep and stack the box. We needed to trust our safeties more.

I can agree with most of that, but in fairness we also happened to be the first to take on their weird "declare someone different as an eligible receiver on every other play" system and had to get used to it in-game. I'd think two weeks of preparing for that would be a huge advantage. Point is that I don't think we were as bad as we necessarily looked.

At the end of the day, our secondary cost us big but I do think we really only need to make tweaks as opposed to wholesale changes. That and get healthy.

You make a good point, being a Patriot fan you were the first team we unleashed the "declare someone different eligible" and Edlemen throwing passes strategy. But you really played a great game!
