Franchise TAG Mcphee

63 posts in this topic

Lmao. You don't use the tag on situational players who won't even start for your team. I love mcphee, but for our team he isn't a need. We're already up against the cap. Pass rush was fine. We need secondary, wr, TE and rb help.

I'm not the best when it comes to the cap but damn dome people don't understand.

cap space.

cost of the tag.

role player not starter.

other areas of need.

what I could think off but there are probably more lol

Out of curiosity, when is the last time Ozzie used the franchise tag? From what I gather, it's not something they like to do.

Im pretty sure it was Suggs in 09.

Lets put it this way... if the Ravens had $50M in cap space, they still wouldn't franchise tag McPhee, because McPhee isn't worth anywhere near how much the franchise tag cost.

He would sign for half of that a long term deal.

There is no possible justification in any shape or form to franchise tag him or even consider it.

Ray Rice, I believe.

Ray Rice, 2012.

He signed an extension the last day of the deadline to do so, so he didn't play out the season under the tag, but he was assigned it.

The franchise tag has been used seven times by the Ravens since inception.

Wally Williams, 98

Chris McAlister, 03-04

Suggs, 08-09

Ngata, 11

Rice, 12

Everybody but Wally Williams eventually signed long-term deals with the Ravens, and no Ravens player has actually played out the season under the tag since Suggs in 2008.

I did not remember that. Thanks.

Why is this not an option.  Why do we always lose good players after we develop them.  Keep him.

The answer is money. What's the question?

Tagging McPhee would be a bad idea. I love the dude but hes a situational dude like said above. The franchise tag would cost too much for his fit on our team.

Because franchise tag is average salary of top players at a particular position.

So McPhee salary for next year would likely be something like 10M+. We already have cap problems needing to make a decision on Ngata and Webb due to their salaries next season.

If McPhee had the same number of sacks as Doom this year then it might have been a feasible to find a way to franchise him.

He's currently a role player ( although vital role player ) that rotates

Nope.   Tagging the big guy ain't cheap.

Only option for us is for him to cruise around the market and bring him back if no one offers him anything significant.   Same with Torrey.

I think we do need a young explosive pure speed rusher that can explode past the OT and strike the qb b4 he even sets. Avril is a speed rusher and it was easy to see Brady was a different qb when he got comfy in the pocket. When he was being pressured he was terrible. Then Avril gets a concussion and Brady was a different Qb.

Suggs and Dumervil are good rushers. But they are technique rushers more so than somebody who can put heat on the qb b4 he even sets. The better QBs get rid of the ball in 3 seconds. We didn't press Bradys WRs but there were still times the rush had 3-4 seconds. If you are going to shut Brady down you have to play to get there in 3 to maybe 3 1/2 seconds. We could use a young speed rusher to learn from suggs and Dumervil. Mcphee is not the player we need anyways. KC beat the breaks off The Patsies cuz the speed rushers got there early and often and Brady had his worst game in years. We need that #3 edge rusher but it needs to be a speed rusher to eventually replace Suggs who is no Spring Chicken. Mcphee isn't that feared edge rusher. Productive but not that game changer. Ravens need to and invest on that game changing explosive edge rusher. Preferably the draft that's rich in speed rushers however if he hit the market Justin Houston is a guy you break the bank for. Perhaps JPP but he has been inconsistent. When getting the edge rusher of the future its very crucial to not get A edge rusher but THE edge rusher!!

Most of the time, you're going to need a high draft pick to accomplish this.

they would tag torrey before McPhee if they wanted to use it lol

Obviously guessing but I actually disagree with this

See why you would think that though

I think they would definitely tag Torrey first.

Torrey's tag would actually be cheaper than McPhee's most likely, and I still think his value to the team is higher.

cheaper tag.

less depth.

starter.

more durable.

harder to replace.

more production.

those are my reasons as to why torrey would make more sense if they wanted to tag someone.

Heck id tag Tucker before McPhee lol.

This would be the only guy they'd use the tag for. It's a joke to think they'd use the tag for a situational pass rusher.

McPhee and Torrey are the only people worth it for real.. I like McPhee but I doubt we'll do it.

Not trying to cut on you man but you think either one of those guys are top 5 at their position.

Nope

No way

No how.

Considering how much Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson make, amongst others, I can't imagine Torrey being viewed as worth that much coin.

As for mcphee I just trust how frequently we have been able to replace people at that spot over the last few years and let him test...

we'll take the compensatory draft pick for mcphee. i wish him well because he was overshadowed by doom and suggs. he may break out for another team. we need receivers and DB's. our front 7 depth on defense can withstand the loss of mcphee.
