This Just In - Joe Flacco...overrated?

21 posts in this topic

So I was browsing ESPN's NFL articles as per usual, and while reading John Clayton's "10 questions" article I came across the following comment from a Dolphin's fan:

Dear Raven fans,

We all know how much of a 'overrated' QB your boy Flacco is. But can you guys please understand that Sunday game is not only going to be about defense. But it's going to be about QB experience in playoff games.

I was at a loss of words for several minutes, racking my brain, attempting to rationalize his opening statement even a little bit. Needless to say I could not.

Now, I'm not one to really care what anyone else has to say - about anything, really, it's a bit of a character "flaw" of mine - but this comment really rattled me for some reason. Not because it offended me as a Flacco supporter(I support him when he does well, trash him when he doesn't, because I am a Ravens fan above anything), but it was just so...incorrect.

Whether or not you think Flacco is a good quarterback is irrelevant, the thing I was most estranged by was his using the word "Overrated". Since when has Flacco been rated highly? In fact every week it's "Let's see if Flacco can 'handle the pressure'", or this week for instance, "Can he catch up to the speed of a playoff game", etc. He's not hailed as a potential League MVP Candidate(see Matt Ryan, who has played all right enough but certainly not a League MVP, or even team MVP), and nobody in the media is saying "Well if they win it'll be because Joe Flacco made it happen!". This team's media attention, and positive comments are always about our *defense*. Flacco is always treated more of a nice surprise when he does well and a so-called liability(even AFC North blogger James Walker said the Ravens could lose this weekend if Flacco suddenly starts playing like a rookie) before big games.

EDIT: Scouts ranking for the playoffs list Flacco as the #10 QB in the playoffs. That's #10 of 12 quarterbacks. I don't necessarily disagree with the rankings, it merely supports my points here.

I guess what I'm saying is the comment offended me more as a believer of the principle that people shouldn't say things that don't make any sense, or have even a speckle of truth to them.

Rant finished.

Go Ravens.

that guy will change his mind after Joe torches his D sunday. Joe's play will do the talking and let everybody know that by no means is he over-rated.

How can you overrate someone who wasn't even on anyone's radar to begin with?

No one outside of the Ravens thought that Joe Flacco would be a good QB; the few analysts that did, assumed that his rookie season would be horrible because of the "huge leap" from Delaware to the NFL.

Unless Flacco had won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award and subsequently bombed in the playoffs and the following season, there's really no way anyone can consider him overrated for at least another year or so.

I believe that's what I said...
I dont think we should care. They'll find out how overrated he is, again, on Sunday.
I don't really care, I was just so shocked by how false a statement that was. I mean, overrated? Really? It's one thing to say if he's good or bad, but overrated?

The only reason I posted it here was that it's Ravens-related, and I believe things that are Ravens-related go on the Ravens forum. (I think, anyway)

How can someone be overrated when they didn't receive a single vote for ROY?

It doesn't matter. Flacco has played in some big games this year and although he has struggled at times, he has also shown why he was picked in the first round coming out of Delaware. I think he is going to have a big game against the Dolphins.

Great post.

Miami Fans are scared. They want to make excuses and rationalize nonsense bcuz they know the truth, and quite frankly, they can't handle the truth. Miami fans know they don't want to see Baltimore in the playoffs. They know Joe Flacco has improved, stepped up to big time challenges, and has matured since the last time the Ravens faced their beloved Dolphins on (Oct. 19th). Miami fans know our defense is dominate, physical, hard hitting, and unstoppable. Miami Fans...are intimidated. Can you blame them? They're just trying to convince themselves to believe in something that isn't real. Trying to create a false sense of hope and security bcuz they know defeat is coming. Let them believe what they want to believe, even if it's ridiculous, outrageous, and far-fetched. I almost have pity for Miami Fans bcuz they're getting their hopes up so high only to have them knocked down to the ground by Ray Lewis and Terrel Suggs.

The difference between winners and losers: Winners don't make excuses.

ESPN comments are useless trash talk.

They always say QBs win championships... Oh that's right they don't that, they say defense wins championships. Ask the 2007 Patriots about that.

they seem to forget that he torched their defense earlier this season and after seeing what he did against jacksonville, i think he could hit 300 yards this time

#1 The people at ESPN are idiots
#2 The guy that said that doesn't know that defense wins championships.
#3 Your team will get further because our D sucks and yours will destroy teams.

I guess we'll see how overrated he is this sunday. To me there's only five other QB's in the playoffs that's better then Joe right now. If people was to do their research and actually think before they make a comment they would know that Flacco is a genius at QB. And I mean that literally. Ever since I heard about Joe back in February, I hoped and prayed that the team drafted him over Ryan. My friends chewed me out about it, but now they all are eating crow. It was a lot of videos on youtube and articles about him on other sites I read in February that led me to believe that this guy could be special. Mentally he's so far ahead of any QB that came out of college since Eli. And no other QB that ever came into this league is as physically put together as Joe. I mean the guy was listed at 6'6 after high school, who knows how tall he is now. He run a 4.7(although Mason said he runs a 4.6) can throw the ball over 80 yards, and he has great accuracy. I guess the person that wrote that email is a little jealous that we have a guy that could possibly be the best ever when it's all said and done. While Miami is stuck with a QB with a arm made out of play dough. Flacco to me is on another level than 90% of the QB's in this league, all he need now is a few more weapons around him for it to show stats wise, which really don't mean much to me. Winning is everything and Joe has the opportunity to prove he's a winner starting this sunday.

Flacco was just named Rookie of the Week for a stellar ~300-yard performance in the season finale to take his team into the playoffs; yea, overrated

I have seen a few Ravens games, and from what I saw there is not much of a difference between Ryan and Flacco. The only things that I didn't see Flacco do is call the no huddle and make changes at the line of scrimmage, but there are things that I saw Flacco do that Ryan doesn't do. They both do not second guess their throws and they both play with poise, which is great for a rookie QB. People who are getting mad that running backs are not getting the awards do not know a lick of football, because the QB position is the toughest position to play. It is not just physical, but it is the mental part that make a QB great.
this is how I like it everybody picking on joe flacco, joe is better off underrated
Just like Flacco's former coach at Delaware said, if Flacco played at USC he would've been the number one pick in the draft. But the perception the media pounded in everyone's head is, he played at a small college so he won't be able to play at the NFL level and the media and most fans still won't accept the fact that Flacco can play at this level. That's probably why people continue to doubt him. But like you said, Joe and the team itself is better off being underrated. Hopefully, sooner or later the underdog we be on top and the ravens win it all, and shock the world.

Exactly right, RB is the easiest postion from college to the pro's, QB then CB is the hardest, The thing that separates Ryan and Flacco apart from most Rookie QB's is work ethic, they spend countless hours studying not only film but the playbook. Flacco has been the first one in the Ravens Building and the last one to leave training camp all season long.. Yes even before Ray Lewis got there..
