TE/DB Coach Vacancies

Here's Wilson's story.

As a high school offensive line coach, he coached 18 guys that went D1, including Matt Birk. While he was in Montreal with Trestman, he coached TEs, RBs, and served as special teams coordinator. Here's a bio of his pre-Bears stuff.

It concerns me that he has no experience coaching college or NFL, other than his time with the Bears. He's somewhat inexperienced. Based on what he did with Bennett, you could argue he's qualified and capable, but you never know. Bennett might actually just be that good. I'm skeptical of this hire, if it happens, but I'll wait and see. I feel like there are better options out there, but on the other hand, it's good to get a fresh coach, instead of just picking from the current pool of NFL coaches. At least this guy is newer. Yeah he's been in the NFL for a few years now, but you get the point.

I like the idea of Mike Smith as the DB couch. I think his firing was unfair. I am a bit surprised though that he didn't get a coordinator position.

He's my top candidate that I see, although there could certainly be better.

what about Jim Schwartz as our DB coach.

I think there are too many teams in the NFL and in the college ranks that will consider him to be a prime DC candidate for him to settle as a positional coach. Hell, I'd take him over Pees as the Ravens' DC.

I could be wrong, but I think Bennetts career started to take off after playing for the Giants, who I also think develop TES well. He's a talent to begin with, so I'm not sure if he really brought out his potential, or was just a natural progression, but he has shown improvement. As much as I didn't initially like the Trestman hire, I do think he'll help develop our passing game and maybe help out or receivers.

I get your point, but when has a TE coach been the reason for a good/bad offense?

In the NFL, position coaches have a big hand in developing the game plan, in addition to developing players. Inexperience as a coach could hinder his ability to do both of these responsibilities. The more experience and the more he knows, the better he can do, and vice versa. I just think there might be more experienced coaches who can contribute more.

Look at Spags these past two years. He helped Pees a lot, since he was a former DC. Assistants can make impacts on the team.

Absolutely true, especially position coaches that have a history of being good to very good coordinators as Spags was when he was with the Giants the first time.

I would agree that position coaches are huge. My case and point would be Clarence Moore for us and how our DL is always extremely well developed

Other examples are Tom Moore, he bolstered Arizonas OL after a short period. Mike Munchak has done wonders in one year with the Steelers OL. I think there impact is very underrated...maybe not as much in Xs and Os but in technique and actual development of Xs and Os into the players style of play and understanding of their position

Per the Ravens site, the TE and DB coach vacancies have been filled. Like some though, assistant DB coach has been promoted to DB coach, and defensive assistant Matt Weiss is now cornerback coach. I love how we develop coaches, not just players here. Just a few years ago Weiss was assistant to the head coach (aka lackey), and now he's Assistant DB coach.

Richard Angulo, who is 34 and played TE in the NFL, is our new TE coach. He was an offensive coaching intern for us last season. Andy Bischoff, who was rumored to be TE coach, is offensive quality control.

Drew Wilkins, who was a coaching assistant, and Mike MacDonald, who was an intern, have been hired as defensive assistants. More guys to develop, right?

Interesting hires. Very young. Very inexperienced. But interesting. Matt Weiss is only 31 years old, and he's coaching guys the same age. Angulo is just two years older than Owen Daniels. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out. Also interesting that Bischoff is quality control. Sounds to me like he's just waiting in the wings to take over as a position coach, probably oline or TE coach, after a few years.

I find it interesting how The Ravens decided to make  Angulo our tight end coach over Bischoff . Bischoff may have two years under his belt as a tight end coach  in The NFl but  that's still more than  Angulo.

Is Dean Pees up for any jobs with other teams?

I'm calling this right now. Top 5 defense in yards and scoring, if the team stays relatively healthy.

I was a bit shocked by these hires as well, I'm confident in Harbs and if he see's something in these guys, then I like it. Obviously they all have a year under Kubiak's system as well so they may have been put in place to help Trestman, as well as on their own merit.
