TE/DB Coach Vacancies

47 posts in this topic

The importance of positional coaches often gets overshadowed by the importance of coordinators. Last year, we hired two positional coaches out of college (Hammock/Engram). We currently have vacancies at TE and the Secondary. Who are some potential candidates for these jobs?

I'm surprised no one has responded to this post? Does anyone have any suggestions? What about Perry Fewell as db coach.

I think no one has answered yet because most have no idea who we could target as our tight end or secondary coach. I wanted The 49ers former secondary coach from last year to be our secondary coach but he was hired by The Bears. Perry Fewell seems like a good candidate but we might check into some college coaches.

I remember hearing Wade Harmon our old TE coach for a long timewas let go cuz ATl coach got fired. For the secondary maybe a promotion from within perhaps whoever was the secondary assistant coach.

Wade Harman just got hired by ATL as their TE's Coach.

One collegiate option is Notre Dame TE's Coach Scott Booker. He is young and helped develop Tyler Eifert, Troy Niklaus, and Ben Koyack

Scott Booker sounds like an interesting option

Lack of responses may also be due to lack of knowledge on the topic. I personally don't know who's available. Maybe they're speaking with Treatman about who he thinks would fill in well at TE coach. It wouldn't surprise me if people are promoted from within for both positions, but there's no rush to have the spots taken care of.

Ozzie retires as GM, becomes TE coach, DeCosta takes over GM...done and done

On a more serious note based on pure personal speculation, Mike Groh may be interesting as he was the WR coach for Trestman in Chicago and son of AL Groh...Maybe Mike McDaniel, he has been around and in the Shanahan offenses before.

DB coach wise I think we hire within we had an assistant DB coach, seems smart to keep some consistency. Plus from his bio he is young and developed in house

Groh has never coached TE's , although interestingly he played for us in '96. McDaniel is headed to Atlanta with Shanahan.

I have a feeling we'll look to the college level. We did it last year with Engram/Hammock.

Chris Hewitt (our Assis DB Coach) could be in line for a promotion. He actually played professionally for a good amount of years and is young.

I'd entertain Mike Smith. I haven't heard that we're connected to him, but then again, we weren't connected at all to Trestman so what the heck. I would like Mike Smith to return home lol. He is a friend of Harbaugh as well. I think if he doesn't get a DC job this would be a great place to come.

That would be a great hire--completely forgot about him, for some reason I thought he followed Del Rio to Oakland

That's probably because there are strong rumors suggesting he is candidate. I have him as my top guy if he doesn't get hired by Oakland. It's certainly possible he might want to come here too, after the success other guys have had who were fired, came here, and got head coaching jobs the next year.

I like Hewitt to take over as DB's coach. College and NFL playing experience. Harbaugh was his position coach in college, both have ties through the Eagles, knows the personnel and the defensive scheme.

Seems like a slam dunk to me.

Terry Malone is a good option whom was The Saints former tight end coach.  He was there from day one to help develop Jimmy Graham into the player he is now and keep in mind Graham was considered to be pretty raw coming out of college because I think he only had one year experience playing football.

I wouldn't mind Dick LeBeau here as a DB coach either. He's not my top pick as a DC but as a position coach he wouldn't be bad.

LeBeau has been hired by the Cardinals as their DC.

For a DB coach, I would have loved Kirk Callahan from UCF, but he's just been hired by Florida.

Harlon Barnett would have been another option, but he's just been promoted to DC at Michigan State.

So how about Duane Akina? He did a fantastic job at Texas for over a decade and has had a solid first season at Stanford. I'd not be complaining if we gave him a shot in the NFL. Other than Akina, how about Seattle Defensive Passing Game Coordinator Rocky Seto?

It looks like, for whatever reason, that Mike Smith isn't the favorite to land the Raiders DC job anymore. In fact, I don't see him linked to any DC jobs at the moment. I'm really hoping he's coming here to coach up our DBs. He and John are friends, so those of you who think John hires his friends could find this as good news. Personally, I think he's the best guy for the job.

Hiring LeBeau would be hilarious. Could you imagine Pittsburgh fans seeing him across the field with RAVENS gear on......priceless. He knows the division front to back and obviously knows Pittsburgh better then anyone....but cant see him taking a DB coaches job after spending 100 years as one of the best DC's in the league. It would be awesome though. I hate Pittsburgh passionately but have to respect what Lebeau has done.....but I can't see him coming here.

The Ravens are expected to hire The Bear former tight end coach Andy Bischoff and I'm guess it's to be our tight end coach

Who?

He coached the Bears' Tight Ends for the past two seasons. Martellus Bennett brought him to the Pro Bowl to thank him for the work he's done with him. Prior to Chicago, he coached Tight Ends and Running Backs in Canada under Trestman.

Harbaugh probably met with him at the Pro Bowl.

Who?

I don't know much about him but Martellus Bennett did go to the pro bowl with him(Andy Bischoff) as his tight end coach last year. Aaron Wilson posted on  twitter  concerning the hire.
