Backup QB (Merged)

As far as I can tell, the "top" names on the market are...

Christian Ponder

Ryan Mallett

Ryan Lindley

Bryn Renner

Pat Devlin

So yeah, not much.

Appropriate timing for this revival.

Now that Matt Schaub is the starter, who becomes the backup? Anyone have an idea of who is even out there... because I have no idea.

We had a 3rd stringer in preseason. He is probably it.

we play in the AFC North and you can't roll that type of dice. BIG BEN has/had solid backups and you need that type of insurance. Granted, BIG BEN is guaranteed to miss quarters and/or game every season.

I don't like to miss a beat and we are fortunate the media is addressing our injuries and giving us excuses....cause in 2007 they called us a bad team and we routinely got a dump taken on us. I feel like our fanbase is still strong and are not the laughing stock we were in 2007 when wusa around dc wouldn't dare show a ravens game. since 2011 wusa 9 around dc has shown all the ravens games.

Renner was our 3rd stringer then right?

Figure if he's out there they'll probably go that way since he'd be familiar with the system.

I'd like to see if they can get anything out if Pinder while still securing a top three pick

Yeah. Ponder is a decent option. He and Renner are good options. I liked Renner in preseason, but Ponder has actual experience. Both are decent options that are better than others, IMO.

Guys, let's face it. This season has been a total catastrophe. What we need is a prayer......which QB can give us a lot of prayers???? He's out there. Lol

Tebow prays a lot from what I hear.

Ponder and mallet have the most arm talent. Mallet has loads of arm talent to actually be a starter if he could ever get focused. Ponder never really got a legit shot on terrible Viking teams!! He has a good arm, accurate and athletic. I don't care if Renner already played in the system. It is all about who has the most skill to eventually play well if Schaub is terrible and perhaps even be the backup into next season.

Big Ben has always had solid backups and they still make it work around the cap. Steelers been doing this longer than us....they keep a war chest at the skills positions and have guys that compliment big bens style.

We need WR's that work for flacco...and a solid backup because we play in a physical division.

when you play in the AFC North it's risky putting it all on one QB....and the bengals may find out the hardway too. Also, I don't think manziel plays a style that will work in the division because he ain't big enough to take the AFC North hits routinely.

I was laughing yesterday because some idiot "reporter" yesterday tweeted something hilarious that came up in my BR stream.

He said "Ravens may be a candidate now to trade for Kaepernick..Harbaugh connection"

WOW really? Never in a million years.

Moving forward, they are going to have to have a contingency plan of Joe isn't ready to start the season. If that's Schaub or someone else..I don't care. But they will need SOMEONE who can actually start for the first few weeks..and just hope the NFL doesn't lay down the gauntlet for us On the schedule.

Yeah I saw that outrageous report as well, I don't know where these guys come up with those but they are surely hilarious.

On a serious note, they DEFINITELY need to have a contingency plan and hopefully they draft a QB in the middle rounds that can develop.  I would not be surprised to see the Ravens carry 3 QB's next year for the first time in a few season, Flacco and a solid veteran backing him up with a talented developmental guy behind him (Kessler, Prescott, Hackenberg, Wentz etc...)

We've been so fortunate that Joe Flacco has been healthy for such a long time, but I would be shocked if he returns from injury and then goes another 5 years without missing a game.

From experience, once you tear your cruciate ligaments, they're never quite as strong as they originally were. Flacco's health won't be as dependable as it once was, and unfortunately, opposing defensive players may even target his knees, so a decent back up will be required going forward.

For now, I'd be more than happy with bringing in Renner.

If there is any chance Flacco will not be ready to go by the 3rd game of the preseason next year then I think the Ravens need to find a capable starter.  Instead of drafting a rookie, a scenario I would explore is floating a trade proposal to the Titans or Bucs for Glennon or Mettenberger.  Now that we can trade comp picks we could offer a 4th or 5th rounder in 2016 or 2017 for either one of those guys and let them start the first couple weeks of the season if need be.  Id rather have either one of those guys for a 4th or 5th rounder then draft a rookie in the late 4th or 5th round and have him not be ready week 1 in a worst case scenario.

I wouldn't be surprised if we did this. It does make sense. I doubt we'd need to give up much for them.

I liked what I saw from Reener in pre season.

So did I, since the season is done anyway, put him out there, start grooming him.  I think he has potential.

Saw Coach Harb speak today. He said that he would be up for Renner for the practice squad.

I'm all for Renner simply for the fact that the guys he'd be throwing to now are pretty much the same ones/level as the ones he was throwing to in preseason.  It sounds like he's a PS option only, though.

I like that. I'm a fan of Glennon, and think TB was stupid in it's handling of him. Bring him aboard!!
