"DeflateGate" Update: Suspension Upheld! Brady Accepts 4 Game Ban.

2,478 posts in this topic

I don't see how Tom Brady gets punished unless there is evidence he was involved or knew about it.  Ultimately Belicheck is responsible.  An appropriate punishment would be, in my opinion:
1.  Suspended Belicheck from the NFL for 6 months effective IMMEDIATELY.  This means he cannot be part of the Super Bowl ride, and will miss most of the off-season business.  Any violations of this tack on an additional 6 months.  This would be handled the same way Sean Payton was suspended = ZERO contact with the team.

2. Revoke the Patriots' top two draft picks.

3. Fine Bob Kraft 5 million USD.  He too is responsible.

4. Place an asterisk (*) next to their win over the Colts last week.

The Patriots are always trying sleazy ways to win, and we know they have done this many times in the past, they just got caught this time.  They have a reputation of "cheaters."  Lay down the hammer so they don't do it again, and send a message to everyone else.

I highly doubt there will be anything to prove that Brady knew about it - but lets be serious.  There's no way he didn't know the balls were under inflated.  If a linebacker can tell, then there's no way the QB throwing the ball doesn't know.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats get off the hook on this unfortunately.  I have a feeling it might come down to the refs not doing their job properly.

Yep, I can see the Patriots getting off clean.  As long as the NFL makes money they don't care about this stuff, they just want it to go away.

Honestly I'm thinking fans should just boycott watching the superbowl if the Pats are not heavily punished. The NFL needs to know that we as fans aren't going to accept this kind of stuff especially from an organization known for being this shady consistently. It isn't even the fact that what they did was so bad (as a lot of other QBs have testified to doing it), but it just confirms they look for any cheat they can find to help them win. This is not okay for the integrity of the game. They cheated to get to the Superbowl and while it likely didn't affect the outcome of the game, it is one of the most egregious acts you can possibly undertake and should have a fitting punishment.

IMO

Ban Belichick from the league for 2 years (Sean Peyton got 1 for bounty gate) effective immediately.

Additionally fine the Pats organization

Pats forfeit their 1st round, and 2nd rounder this year as well as their first in the following year.

I remember thinking to myself during the game that Tucker wasn't getting the usual distance on his kickoffs. They were barely getting to the goal line instead of through the end zone. I wrote it off because it was in Foxborough in January. It was cold. Now I'm not so sure.

On the bright side now there is nothing the Patriots can do to remove the asterisk next to their Super Bowl titles. You just know everyone was ready to put Spygate behind us if they won another Super Bowl. Now that will never happen. They will forever be known as cheaters which makes me smile a bit.

Ravens Fans -  a couple thoughts on this issue. First, I really can't believe some of you are saying, "The score was 45-7 so it doesn't matter." THAT IS COMPLETELY BESIDE THE POINT. The Patriots have created a culture of cheating. The Colts are reporting they thought patriots had under inflated balls in their earlier meeting and at least one other NFL team says they were suspicious about this issue in a game in November. Perhaps Brady and the Pats have been doing this consistently or even off and on for years. If it wasn't an advantage, they wouldn't do it. Just think of the games it may have impacted over the last decade. Think of the close battles you guys have had with them. Think of the fact that if they would cheat like this, how else do they cheat and have not been caught? Personally, I think this sucks.

Second - this culture of cheating is just garbage. These guys present themselves as the "class organization of the NFL". What a joke.  Bellicheat ought to get the Peyton Punishment…one year out of the league. If Pretty Boy has been asking for deflated balls for years (which I suspect)…his legacy is tainted.

It doesn't mean the Pats haven't had an awesome run or that Brady isn't a great QB. It just means that these guys are consistent cheaters who have repeatedly broken the rules or twisted the rules to gain a competitive advantage. My Patriot hatred is on a whole new level. I love/hate our battles with the Ravens. My "hate" for the Ravens is because you make it so hard for us to reach our goals.  But the Pats are just freaking armpit, cheating jerks.

As great of an idea as a Super Bowl boycott is, I think the event is just too big. The sheer numbers it would take to make any noise at all would be astronomical.

Sadly this is going to be a smack on the wrist at most.

It's plausible that they started doing this after their blowout loss to the Chiefs. Respected football people were questioning if Brady might be done. It's entirely possible.

I agree with all of this, except that BB should get one year suspension. Peyton got 1 year for his crime ( his first infraction ). This is now the Patriots second infraction and one that is in the same vein as the first. An Iron Fist must hammer down... this is garbage! There's really zero reason for the NFL to NOT hamstring them for a number of years, IMO! Look at the Cowboys and Redskins salary cap deal... those teams were crippled for not keeping the spirit of the cap in mind... THESE scumbags have CHEATED in real-time game situations for likely YEARS.... for the SECOND TIME!

I think it might be wise to hear what the NFL has discovered before we start discussing punishment.  I definitely hope that the referees also took the Colts balls and tested their pressure as well.

Now former Tampa Bay QB Brad Johnson has come out and admitted he PAID $7,500 to alter all 100 footballs used in Super Bowl XXXVII against Oakland.

As for the Patriots, I think a 1 year suspension of Belichick, loss of 1st and 2nd round picks, and some kind of hefty fine by Robert Kraft would be justice. Begin the suspension as of Mon Feb 2nd, 2015 and the suspension is lifted Monday Feb 8th, the day after Super Bowl 50.

Already reported. Colts balls were normal inflation.

Well, we don't often agree….but this is just over the top garbage. I hope your right and the penalty is severe.

That punishment is only marginally more severe than what the Saints got for Bountygate. I'm really curious to see what the NFL does. Repeat offenders are generally treated more severely. Belicheat absolutely deserves a suspension but I think it should start immediately. He should not be coaching in the Super Bowl. And they should lose multiple 1st round draft picks.

No source, I heard on 105.7 that the Ravens complained of similar issues with the balls in our game with them. That brings the question, how long have they been doing this?? Certainly it wasn't just for these past two games...

Jason LA Confronta said something similar to that note on twitter

Just saw this on Yahoo, they said there is a rule in the rulebook that allows them to punish the Patriots anyway possible. Including replaying said game or calling it a forfeit.

The penalties for Unfair Acts appear to be unlimited and range from a minimum of fines, suspensions, and lost draft picks, all the way to giving commissioner Roger Goodell the power to replay the game or even rule it a forfeit.

Thinking it's too late to replay the game but they could cancel the Pro Bowl and replay the Colts-Patriots game on Sunday if they want. Interesting though that a replay of the game or even forfeit is an option.

Suspend Belicheck from the super bowl. Deal with it after the season is over like he's done with Rice, Peterson & Hardy.

mike freeman @mikefreemanNFL

Gerry Austin, longtime referee, says halftime Pats-Colts footballs brought in, checked at half. Colts footballs still legal. Pats were not.

That should clear up the Patriots fans' excuse that it was because of the cold weather.

By coincidence all 11 of 12 footballs got bad BC of rain. (Also all coincidentally were 2pounds smaller than legal amt).

Must be some really cheap knockoff pigskins if you ask me..:)

You have to wonder, why all but 1 were deflated? Maybe to help cover it up?

Whoever inflated that one ball was probably fired

I love how much of the defense defaults straight to the score. Who cares. All I want to know is if they were responsible for this or not. If they were, their entire season (to me) is in question. Why are they the second best team as far as fumbles are concerned this year? I didn't find the stat for it but I'd imagine their offense did well in average time of possession, which should increase that rate to some degree. Could all those games (or some) be tainted with nonregulated ball pressure? If they think they can get away with it in the postseason, I don't see why they would think differently in the regular season. I'm curious as to the cumulative amount of cheating they've accomplished, and not necessarily just with ball tampering. And if the Pats are behind deflate-gate, they deserve every ounce of doubt the public has with their awesome team.

Edit: Did a quick search on time of possession, where they were middle of the pack so...eh. My point still stands.
