What are the best Concerts you have ever experienced?

72 posts in this topic

My friends, It is off season and the time to R E L A X, share memories of your favorite bands and artists.

Firstly, I am aged in the 60's grew up in the sixties and had the fortune to see amazing music.

Today I will describe a Pink Floyd Concert. (You should play this from Utube as I describe)   The 1994 Pulse tour landed in Philly and I knew it was a bucket list item for my wife and close friends

I actually attended completely cognizant, sober and able to sense the sound and visual  experience that is.......  Pink Floyd.

It was an arena concert which serves their sound system to its full capability.  They were absolutely perfect   Not too loud or soft   Perfectly balanced    You could hear every instrument and no voice underload at all. The traditional three female singers were there swaying to every pulse and melodious note searing through the air.  I sat dead center right in front of the mix board  That is the best vantage point.  The visual system is totally different than any other band   It is the vital part of their concert experience. Vids and spot light effects with swing fixtures and beam variation that would bring multiple rushes to the temples forward of your ears.   The sound was absolutley correct  No need to cover ear drums with paper towels   Music meant to be absorbed and  enjoyed to the fullest.  They started with Shine on Crazy Diamond, played for approx two hours and we were entertained with pleasantries and courtesy from Gilmour through segways from one group of songs to another.  One of my favorite songs was Tongue tied and twisted. .

Two teenagers were behind us I knew Running was starting from the lead riff  and exclained the title.  One of pimple faced boys said "Hey the old dude likes the Floyd man. Laughed

This concert ranks in my top 10

Disclaimer: There is no best as all music has unique character that stimulates us in various ways  I could not compare them to my experiences of the Who, McCartney, Steve Miller, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple,Tower of Power, Bonnie Raitt, Lynrd Skynrd, Stones, Dead, Airplane, Quicksilver, Doobies, Los Lobos, Little Feat, oJo Gunn,  Dr. John,The Rippingtons,Spyro Gyra,  Special EFX, Dave Valentine and many more.  I like to share more of my music filled life and will post.  I hope you will do same

The Rock n Roll Hall Induction committee is Bogus.

While, this is a nice, refreshing, relaxing topic, it really belongs in off-topic since it has nothing to do with the Ravens. But, to answer the question, some of my favorite concerts: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, The Offspring, 311.

Michael Jackson History tour when he came to the Amsterdam Arena.

Next up was probably Eminem Anger Management Tour also in the Arena.

I'll say this ... I've always been one to say that the quality of a concert is 1/2 who you are seeing and 1/2 where you are seeing them.

I can almost throw out any concert I've attended in any of those big basketball arenas. Terrible acoustics ... need a telescope to see the band, etc. Seeing Zepplin (Song Remains the Same Tour) and the Stones (1981) was awesome, but those get down graded due to the venue (Captial Centre).

I saw U2 on their first US tour in 1984. Small concert hall venue ... band still hungry to impress ... Bono not yet turned into a farce ... that show was one of the best. Also, saw Jesus and Mary Chain in a small club in Munich ... they're notorious for showing up to some gigs completely disinterested, but this night they were on fire.

My first time and only time so far of seeing my favorite band Iron Maiden play live in Buffalo NY.

Also getting to see Mastodon in a small venue was cool. I love those guys.

I got to meet Kobra and the Lotus too.

Those are my top 3.

Little Feat

I saw Little Feat 8 times  They are classic  I put them in the same circle as Doobies and Los Lobos.  I remember the Valley Forge music fair in VF Pa  They had a circular stage that moved super slow  I sat in the front row and was able to see the perspective of the band towards the audience.  Watching Richie Hayward work his kit was amazing. Huge Kenny Gradney fan  Most solid bass player there is   Tank  You know good music Brother

To get here you had to choose Off Topic.  You will find a variety of subjects in our place   The NBA topic and where are you from are  interesting as well.  We have a member from UK wo created a topic regarding where to go on his trip to the States. Explore and you shall see.   Red Hot Chili Peppers and Green day are in my mix too. Thanks for the post.

Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Who, Van Halen

McCartney was perfect and he played guitar and piano as well.  His band is solid and the drummer Labriothal?  He reminds me of one of our D linemen.  Saw them in 01 in AC  He played a trio of songs for John, George and Linda  Not one dry eye in the house.    Also saw Band on Run tour in 76 with Linda  and Denny Laine.  The Who> I saw them in 71 right after Who's Next was released and again in 74 on the Quadrophenia tour.  Pete Townsend,  the nose with a stick body  haha     Van Halen  With Roth???  Springsteen with an acoustic flavor to his political peel on stage   Thanks for the post

I saw Zepplelin in Philly and Page was wasted beyond human endurance.  Loved Bonham and Jones' work together  The Stones were one of the most perfectly sound crafted band  The quality was excellent. I remembr one of the tours  I believe it was the Steel  Wheels tour

I'm not even a fan of Muse, but I went to one of their concerts about a few years back.  My friend had an extra ticket and figured I'd tag along since I had nothing else to do.  I still wouldn't call myself a fan being that they aren't my style, but they were absolutely incredible live.  Everything was so over the top energetic.

Was it ma-ma-ma-ma madness?

(Only song I know from them.)

What was the atmosphere like? The sound quality? Thanks for the post

The only one that was bad was the arena tour. Which I wanna say was the POP Mart tour. That band just belongs in a stadium. I have seen them four times total. All the stadium shows the sound was fantastic. ( shout out to Clair Brothers and Joe O'hillery. )

I said the Song Remains the Same tour, but actually it was one after it, but the format of the show was the same. It was Memorial Day weekend 1978 in the Cap Centre. The show I attended, Page was the absolute feature. Being a lead singer myself, I worshiped Plant at the time, but honestly I didn't feel like he was entirely on his game. All in all, though, a great show to have seen.

As for the Stones, I saw them at JFK in Philly June 78. It was not good at all. Their set was very short, their sound wasn't good (outdoor stadiums are even worse than basketball arenas) and it was strangely unseasonably cold and rainy and I was absolutely not dressed for it so I was pretty miserable.

1981 saw them in the Cap Centre .. again, not the greatest venue but really a good show and they were full of energy and on their game.

U2

Funny I mentioned U2 was probably my top concert all time. When/where did you see them?

I had stated that I saw them in 1984 - I just looked it up and it was 24 April 1983 (War Tour). I said it was their first US tour, but that was not accurate. They apparently had 2 previous tours in 1980 (Boy) and 1981 (October). Still, they had not yet achieved super-group status and played in Norfolk VA at Chrysler Hall .. a modestly sized venue that is build for orchestra, so as long as the band keeps the volume under control, the sound is great. Actually, I saw Frank Zappa there once and as he started the show the first thing he said was, "This is a nice hall .. please don't F it up)!

The other thing I always found interesting about this particular show was, I saw the Grammys the year that U2 won for "Beautiful Day" and as John Stewart was introducing them he said "I saw them in Norfolk VA in the early 80s and it was the best show I'd ever seen"! Who knows, maybe I bumped into him and didn't know it (as he as apparently a college student in the area during that time).

If you wanted to look up the specifics of your show, check out this site:

You can see the set list for your show.

Love talking about concerts!

yeah Hero, I'm an old road dog and have seen just about all of the "classic" groups over the years. Little Feat was one of the few that was able to play the tunes they recorded in the studio and improve upon the sound and quality. Amazing players, all of them, and amazing vocals.

Another all time favorite live is the Chili Peppers. Total energy and great talent, especially Flea, who I consider to be the best R and R bass player ever. It's a shame John Frusciante no longer plays with them as he as well is near the top of the heap of R and R guitarists.

I think the only band that I could consider as being as good live as the Feat is Santana. I still go to see Carlos every time he comes to town and have never been disappointed. He always assembles an amazing group of players and the sound that comes off the stage sends chills up your spine.

I'm with you.  You get the occasional top notch concert at arena levels, but I've always enjoyed the smaller venue types of bands much more.

Yea concert shows are good if you go in knowing what to expect..

Full production and basically choreographed type feel

Small shows you actually get that for lack of a better word intimate type feel

Hard to pick a best but my favorite had to be seeing Killswitch Engage, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Every Time I Die about 5 years ago in Asheville, NC. The latter two are two of my favorite bands so I was obviously pleased with them but Killswitch had a great show too. The two things I remember most vividly: Greg Puciato, Dillinger's vocalist, literally climbing up some of the venue's hanging speakers and Every Time I Die tossing a couple of beers into the audience. Before being allowed to drink, Keith Buckley their vocalist informed the two "catchees" that if they didn't chug their beers before guitarist and mountain man Andy Williams finished his, they would be removed from the show. Needless to say those two drank faster than they ever have, haha.
