I go to Virginia Tech and the defensive backs there may be the best coached in the country. The amount they are expected to do in terms of versatility and extremely complex schemes just blows my mind.

Yeah those DBs are some of the best coached imo. They have good technique despite having sometimes limited athleticism. It would be a coup to get their secondary coach

I think fat slob rob Ryan took the unit the very next year to near tops.

Ryan runs a different defensive scheme than Steve it could have been all along that The Saints had the  personel to run  3-4 better than a  4-3 that Steve wanted to run and there were other stuff going on with The Saints during the time.

I can already tell that would be a trainwreck. Reed would coach the secondary on how to shut receivers down and stay with them. Then Pees will be like forget everything a future HOF just said and stay 20 yards off the receiver. It won't matter who we bring in as our secondary coach as long as Pees keeps letting our secondary get beat every play.

I just keep picturing lateral drills :P

It won't matter now like it never mattered before. Ed helped a lot of the young secondary DBs elevate their games without the permission of anyone. If we were bold enough to bring him back into the fold - all I can see is gratitude from the entire organization. Let's face it - he would get results because he's already auditioned for the job while playing. We can't do worst than the last 2 years in the defensive backfield.

Bring on Reed. Heal it now.

Just looked Chris Hewitt our assistant Defensive backs resume on the team website--looks like a great choice if we stay in house which we likely will. Could be a big find later on as he has some youth

Looked him up after reading your post - thanks for throwing the suggestion out there I really like it.

Seems like a good, logical fit and with our tendency to hire within it honestly seems likely. Nfl playing experience, coached the position at the d1 level under schiano and has a deep personal connection to Harbs as he played for Harbaugh as a bearcat and ties to through the eagles.

Young and hungry guy looking to prove himself. Knows the personnel well already. Promote him and bring in reed as an assistant role to help teach, gain experience and eventually take on a larger role.

Love the idea of getting reed involved but don't think throwing him right in as a position coach, especially with the lofty expectations that would be placed on him, coaching quite honestly one of the worst units in the league would be a good environment to bring him in to.

Not fair to him or conducive to long term success should he want a career in coaching, which we don't even know is the case right now.

But really like the Hewitt suggestion - great call and next level thinking by you.

Any chance at all we would talk to Fangio to bring his crew on board and cut ties with Pees?

I'm not a pees hater and don't think he deserves to be let go, but I think Fangio his staff would be a massive upgrade especially if we end up losing monachino.

I can't see the secondary improving all that much with pees running the show.

And I think if fangio is interested in the redskins job he'd come here in a heart beat. I'm all for loyalty but not taking the opportunity to upgrade each and every way possible is irresponsible.

With Fangio at DC bringing along his secondary coach and if we could keep monachino... And with Kubiak staying on as OC I think we'd have by far the best coaching staff in football

I'm seeing top 5 offense and defense. They proved in San Fran they can develop talent all over the field, and played a more aggressive hard hitting style defense that I want to see back here in baltimore.

I'm getting excited even though I know deep down Harbs won't axe pees. But you absolutely have to make a call to Fangio.

I'm not defending pees to say hes a good defensive coordinator, but playing off of the receivers was to prevent the big plays. we kept getting burned early in the year on big plays b.c our corners and safeties were getting burned. I hated them playing off the receivers every flippin play, but as the season went on I came to grips with it. our secondary was going to give up plays whether they lined up 20 yards away or a foot away. that's how bad they were.

I can't see any of the Virginia Tech defensive coaches willingly leaving. People have probably been trying to get Bud Foster for a while to be a college head coach and he won't leave. Of course, he's probably next in line with Grey being the next in line at DC

maybe just maybe it could had something to do with all those practice squad players being forced to start @ CB and having only 1 safety that can play deep.

or maybe it had something to do with us playing a lot more zone due to all the injuries.

you do know that when for instance its cover 3 and the CBs should fall back into a deep zone, its not really wise to have them play tight since there is no safety help over the top......

id say go back and watch what type of coverage we where running when jimmy was still healthy for instance.

Well I guess there two options i think that would work...

Promote Chris Hewitt and Bring in ed reed at assistant

Or

Bring in Torrian gray and stay with chris hewitt at assist

But as someone said earlier, i don't think gray has intentions of leaving VT.

Pondered this thought as well.  Fangio is available and in my opinion a top tier DC.  Teams with openings should be falling over themselves to line up interviews with Fangio.
